can anyone recomend some inexpensive upgrades to improve performance on my 96 mark vii

Get all the basic maintenance stuff done: plugs, wires, oil probably replacing a good deal of the suspension.
Cheap mods include the j-mod, chip, gears, and some light exhaust work.

Get a connical filter and 80mm maf sensor. supercoupeperformance.com is a good site to get you started with ideas. xcal2 programmer. maybe a custom catback from midas or something shouldnt cost more than 150.

Maybe a cobra intake manifold. haha.!!!

Handling or motor? What type of performance improvement do you seek?

The car already has a nice powerplant, so if what you want is a zippier handling quotient, that is where you should focus.

If you want a few extra ponies, different approach.

Road versus stoplight perf, different again.

Help us to help you by being just a tad more specific if you can. Otherwise, we will give you great ideas to accomplish things you don't really want to do.
