2001 Continental Stalling and Bucking

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just bought a 2001 Continental, and lucky me, WA state does not have a lemon law. It drove fine at the dealer. Now, it is stalling 2 times at start up, the rpms are all over the place, and when driving, it is bucking, mostly on acceleration and at lower speeds. Here are my questions. A) What could be causing this? B) Should I add another $119 to my car payment and get an extended warranty? Is this car prone to problems? I am really wondering if I made a bad move after only a couple days. Gas mileage is not affected, it is great, and it is not setting off any lights. Thanks for the help!

Sounds like the IAC valve or a vacuum hose leak. How many miles on it? Ans does it shift good?

DITTO!

The car has 65000 miles.

Ok, I put dry gas, and octane booster in. It seems to be bucking less when I am driving. The car shifts fine. It is stalling at start up as well as at idle. When I 1st start it, it idles up to like 1200-1500 and then calms down 1st thing in the AM. After that, it wants to idle at like 500 to 600 and stalls.

If she's shifting fine that is a good thing. If you have some mechanical know how I would buy a IAC valve from autozone or your prefered place and install that. Also before you buy it have them scan for codes first. It will store codes with out throwing the check engine light. I sure this is just some simple part, no major repair or anything. The bucking could be a bad plug or coil pack but you can do one thing at a time. Start with the scan and go from their. If it has a misfire code get a plug and a coil. If theirs no code I would change out the IAC valve.

I went to Schucks and used the scan tool, no codes. I bought the IAC valve and brought it home to install it. Opened the hood, and started to get ready to disassemble things, and there it was. When the service department at the dealer did the oil change, they did not reattach the air filter. So, I reattached the clamp, and it is fine. Not really happy with the dealer. I bought the car, and they forgot to do the oil change, then they were going to charge me for it, and then forgetting something that simple. I should have caught that before now. All is well, and THANKS FOR THE HELP!!

LOL, does she run good now?

mine was doing the same crazy thing. Bucking and crazy RPMs. I replaced the fuel filter, but now that I think about it when I replaced the battery I'm not sure I reattached the air filter the proper way...
Except my 00 Conti seems to do it only in cooler weather...

No bucking or fluctuation in the RPM, glad it was something that stupid. Thanks everyone!
