So there I was, under the '92 replacing what I think to be the stock balancer with it's bulging and cracked rubber. After I pulled the old part of the car, I found that someone had siliconed the inside of the balancer at the key way. I have been cleaning, the engine bi-weekly from nasty road build up and I believe I found one of my oil leaks a direct cause. Oddly enough, it's the inside of my harmonic balancer!
What are the odds that the mating surfaces between the crank and inside of the balancer and key way are so out of spec, that oil would sling from inside the balancer/pulley assembly? Yes, I identified that the inside of the pulley was indeed full of oil soaked crud. The front of the engine, face and bodies of the accessory pulleys and fan all have an oil film and accumulated dust. I have a run spot of oil that has found its way from the water pump outlet, where it ties into the coolant hose, all the way to the bottom most part of said hose. (what fun!)
At 150+k miles, is it something internal that is forcing the oil out the crank bolt area? Yes, the engine leaks from a few other spots, rear main(?), oil pan, timing cover - Not the timing cover seal! It is dry as a bone... However, those spots do not explain the how oil is getting inside the crank pulley! Any thoughts?
I replaced the out balancer with one like this form Maxx at 5 Star...

I had installed it a few days ago and will check on it tomorrow morning. I want to give it a few days to see if it is going to make a mess.
I checked with a few other reliable sources and I was told that with Ford V8s, it is common to find silicone in there from the factory, and to follow the pratice. Another source asked if the crank was tapered? I figured the FOMOCO crank is not tapered, with the experience I had R&Ring the part.
That explains the theory behind RTV in the Harmonic Balancer key way and bolt hole. Have you seen this in practice before, Chicken?

as for your pulley, i thought i remembered seeing that stuff in there, but all the books that old are upstairs at work and im to lazy to walk up there j/k. it says "to apply a thin coat in the keyway slot on the pulley" although ive seen many without
