oil in the plug holes

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I put a new set of plastic cover gaskets and new coil pack boots all around on my ls. I was wondering if the motor oil in there is a common thing or if I had something wrong. I talked to a mechanic friend of mine and he has worked on a few LS's he said that it was that way on all of them. Is it just something on these cars because of the jag engine???

You changed the seals that go around the plug wells when you did valve cover gaskets? If so, sounds like they aren't seated correctly?

I changed the gaskets on the plastic covers that go over the coils. Do I need to change the head gaskets??

not head valve cover

right - you need to change the valve cover (not head) gaskets.

Pressure builds in the valve covers and oil seeps past the gaskets seals and into the plug wells.

damn I was hoping you wouldn't say that. I will have to get some gasket kits bought

If there is pressure building in the valve train that means your PCV and or ecav system is bad.

the V8 do not use a PCV valve - they vent open hose to the intake.

It's a very, very common issue with Gen1 LSes (a thread on it almost everyday) and some early 03s.

Than there would have to be something wrong with the hose if there is pressure building under the valve covers. No mater what engine it is there should never be pressure in the crank case.

Actually, crank case pressure of some sort is part of all internal combustion engine activity. Because of pollution controls mandated by the EPA, there's a built-in arrangement that's supposed to draw the internal 'fumes' back into the intake. On the early cars it sometimes doesn't work very well. The sure cure is to put a vent into each cam cover. (Only if you don't have to pass state inspections !)
