Painting woodgrain

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: bklene50

I'm sitting here, bored, and thinking about the next plan for my car. I decided to paint the interior woodgrain, and after searching around a bit, found out it's not too hard.

First, I can't decided whether to paint it a gloss black like the exterior, or a flat black like the radio. What would you say?

Second, anyone here who has done the mod, let me know how it went for you. Did you find that you needed more supplies than in the chrome trim write-up? Are there any other write-ups I am missing?

I am assuming that the same concept for the chrome applies to the trim inside the car.

Write-up --> http://www.lskoncepts.com/Grille&#37...nd%20Paint.pdf

Finally, does anyone have any pictures that I can see of it?

I think the flat black would look better, it would flow with the radio better. Are you thinking about painting all the wood? Like the inserts on the doors? or just the area around the radio?

Posted by: NYC LS8

I plan on doing all the removable trim in my car body color, center stack and all. Who knows if I'll ever get around to it, though lol

Good luck if ya do it!

Posted by: gt95coupe

Ive thought of doing this as well but I might get tired of it so I never did it.

Posted by: E.M.

paint everything... the radio bezel included... body color.

Posted by: ElLoco

painting woodgrain? my opinion dont like it but i mean thats me man hope it looks good tho

Posted by: KD00LS

Flat so it matches the radio, unless you paint the radio too.

Posted by: bklene50

I would like it all to match, but I like the idea of color matching the exterior. Is it okay to assume that I would just have to tape off all the buttons on the radio? Or will there be some prep work involved in that as well?

Posted by: E.M.

i havent taken apart an LS radio... but Im sure theres a way to get that face plate off of it.

Posted by: pektel

Yes it's actually quite easy to remove the stock faceplate. On a gen 1 anyways... I was going to use that as a bezel for my double din, but fortunately the one i bought came with the bezel already

Posted by: pektel

But IIRC, the buttons stay attached to the faceplate. you'd still have to tape them off...

This is true, the faceplate pops off, but the buttons stay attached. You might be able to separate it more, but it would be more work. Might as well just tape the buttons and screen off.

i'd say gloss black...i'm thinking about doing the same but in white...wish i would have thought about this before my car got some new paint...pearl white is EXPENSIVE...

Posted by: KD00LS

I've seen it done once it twice in body color. Use a clear coat to give the plastic pieces some depth, it looks nice.

Here is what one member did, custom painted wood grain:

I would cover them with vinyl instead of painting. That way you can return it bact to stock easliy rather than expecting someone to like your paint job when you try to sell it someday.

I painted mine body color...

Posted by: E.M.

^^^FTW^^^

thats exactly how I would do it.

Posted by: PGA2B

I had mine painted to match the custom black exterior paint on mine. It's Dupont Super Jet Black-It makes the factory black look Grey

Posted by: bklene50

After seeing those pictures, it will be body color. Now I just have to find the time. Did you guys do that on your own? How long did it take?

Posted by: ElLoco

well id have to say it looks good

You have to take the faceplate off. It had tiny star bit screws, and i didnt have the proper tool at the time.

That's the way to do it.

Nice work, boys!

Posted by: King03LS8

Man, that looks factory! Awesome work!

Posted by: RollinLS

How about a satin silver? It would really set off the black on black look.

BTW You plan to hit any shows this year? If so, let me know. We could meet up and show together. When the weather warms up, we need to get together for some pictures sometime.

Posted by: bklene50

I'll have to play around with some colors, see what looks best. Hopefully I can get something started up this weekend.

As for the shows Rollin yes I do plan to go to some. I still have to get some body work done, bus driver backed into me and waiting on their insurance company, and I need to get my McLaren grille installed. The first show I was looking at was April 6th in Waterloo. And we never can tell the weather around here, but I'd love to get some pictures, I'll need some new one soon anyways.

I know that Eleanor guy who used to be a member on here did his in Silver Frost Metallic.

Posted by: bklene50

I'm actually working on the project right now. It looks great so far. I am using the Krylon Fusion paint that sticks to plastics. I highly recommend it to anyone thinking about this, but do NOT sand or wet sand the pieces prior to applying.

Posted by: bklene50

Okay I've had this done for a few days now but I haven't had the chance to get the pictures on here. Anyways not a bad project just set aside a few hours for it and get creative.

Posted by: rickztahone

i don't want to be rude because i like encouraging fellow members work on their cars but it just seems to me like you could've lightly sanded the pieces before spraying them. i'm just saying that by the way these look but maybe it's the camera angle or something. please correct me if i'm wrong. cell phone piks?

Posted by: NYC LS8

Looks damn good for a self done job!

Posted by: bklene50

Yes rick they are cell phone pictures but the paint actually turned out worse on the piece I sanded. The paint I used is made to stick to smooth plastic. The one piece I sanded I ended up having to put 4 coats of black on with 1000 grit sanding in between to get it smooth like the rest. Even then it is still not as smooth as I would like it to be.

I will get some more pictures done when I rest of the doors. Thanks Tom that grille should be on in the next couple weeks when I get it painted.

Posted by: daves2000ls

I did this in May of 2006, I think. One thing I'll say, beware of putting your key into the ignition. I chipped some of the paint and need to respray it when it warms up.

Posted by: union807trucker

i am thinking about painting the interior wood parts with krylon fusion paint is this the best paint to do it with or is there another ?
another question is im looking for a silver or brushed aluminum look like the way the new lincoln ls come with what paint would be the closest to macth that if not i have a silver ls i was going to go with the same macthing outside which ever one is best thanks guys

Posted by: bklene50

I used the Krylon stuff when I first did it. It works good and gives it a nice smooth look. But I am redoing all of it the proper way now. It takes a lot longer but a few of my pieces turned out nicely and I don't know if I'll redo them.

Just curious as to what you consider the proper way?

Mark

Posted by: bklene50

Sanding, priming, painting. The Krylon does definitly work though. Be sure you don't sand or anything first though. Take your time and do it in the right environment.

Posted by: union807trucker

i cant find silver krylon anywhere...is there any other company that works good?????
