i tried to program my new keyfob today, on my 2003 aviator.
owner manual says cycle ignition key from on to lock position 8 times, stopping at on position, then doors should lock and unlock to tell you that you are in programming mode
i've tried it several times and cannot get into programming mode for some reason
any ideas?

If I understand correctly, you can't get the Avi to cycle the power locks, correct? I'm sure that you've tried this at different "speeds", doing it quickly and slowly. If you haven't, give it a try at different speeds...fast 8 times or slower 8 times, you know.
Also, make sure all of the doors are closed. And try it with all of the doors locked, then unlocked. The main thing is to make sure you're turning the key to the "on" position fully each of the eight times.
We just bought a 2003 Escape XLT for our daughter today. It came with only one remote fob, but I had a few extras lying around. I could get one to work, but not the other. What was the problem? No battery in one remote...duh!!! And what do you think happened when I put a battery in? Success!
But enough about me...good luck with your Aviator.

My whole problem was not unlocking the doors with the interior door lock button. With just the driver's door unlocked via the existing keyfob, it wouldn't let vehicle into programming mode. Once I unlocked doors from inside using the button, it worked great, and immediately..LOL...
