The Mark Being Featured in a Magazine

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: mlschultz

Well everyone, The Mark is planned to be featured in a magazine. I am humbly flattered, that my Mark build intrigued the editor of two magazines. We have spoken, and a feature is planned for the final stages of The Mark build.

They will be following Aric Carrion with Injected Engineering, while he builds my new forged motor, the swap, SC tube work, etc. taking photos of everything along the way.

I will post stuff here, as they come up with this part of the build.

Many Thanks to Aric, Ryan, and Tyler with Injected Engineering, as this build is all about their impeccable craftsmanship, and attention to detail.

I also would like to thank Mr. Will Smith, with Buckaroo Communications - Ford Builder and Super Rod magazines for making my day

That's Fantastic... Way to go!!!

Posted by: mafioso

congrats I cant wait for my features either!!

Posted by: daddyohood

Great Job!!! Awesome Car! Where can I get the Mag to see more of it?

Posted by: mlschultz

Thanks Everyone! I am thrilled to say the least. Aric has already sent a Teksid block to the machine shop last week, and has all the engine parts on order. Let the fun begin! Stay tuned...

Posted by: turborich

You would never expect a 12 second car just from looking at it with the hood closed! It still looks super clean & classy, Nice looking wheels too. Great job!!!!!

Posted by: Jafeb

Congrats... Nice job

Posted by: mlschultz

Thanks, again

Update - Spoke with Ryan@Injected yesterday, and it will be another week before the engine block is done. Tim Lynch at Pro Line Race Engines is doing the machine work on the 302 stroker kit. People who follow Outlaw 10.5 drag racing will recognize the name Tim Lynch. He is the man

http://www.prolineraceengines.com/index.php

The heads and cams are also on there way to Pro Line and Barry Doyle is going to refresh a set of Aric's heads and cams. Not sure what cams are being used, but I suspect they will not be Mark VIII grind cams.

So, before anything is set up with Will Smith for the magazine article, all this preliminary stuff needs to be done first. More to come in the next week or two...

Posted by: Cobramarkviii

thats Sweet man, I will def buy the Magazine As soon as it out, make sure you post the date that it will be issued in so we all can go buy it, Congrats again bro..

Posted by: Sal329

That is one BEAUTIFUL Mark. Congrads on the great work. What magazine? Let us know when we can get a copy.

Posted by: matchbox

Wow those wheels are absolutely amazing. I guess the built motor and supercharger isn't all that bad either. Thumbs up for a nice car.

Posted by: Sal329

What suspension are you running? The stance is perfect.

Posted by: mlschultz

Thanks, everyone. The feature is going to be in either Ford Builder, or Super Rod magazine. Here is a link to their web sites:

http://www.fordbuilder.com

http://www.superrod.com

Will has not started with the article and photography yet, because we are waiting for the engine block and heads to return from Pro Line Race Engines. Once Pro Line is finished, Aric will then assemble the engine and install it in the Mark, while Will writes the story and takes the pictures for the feature. I would suspect it will hit the news stands later this year.

I have decided to keep the engine build in the 400-500rwhp range using the stock fuel rails. I might be going to a Ford GT pump if the SVT Focus pump and KB BAP can not keep up. My goal is to have a solid 11.5 second 1/4 mile car. No plans ever, for a roll bar in the Mark

I just do not see the point of going any further with the power at this time. Therefore, mostly bottom end stuff is going to be done. Here is a highlight list:

Injected 302 Stroker Kit

Custom Manley Pistons-off set

Manley H-Beam Rods

ARP 2000 Bolts

Total Seal Stainless File Rings

Federal Mogul H Rod & Main Bearings

ARP Main Stud Kit

ARP High Tensile Strength Head Studs (with 12 pt nuts)

Melling High Volume Oil Pump with Billet Gears

Refresh Cylinder Heads

Accufab Single Blade Throttle Body

Polished 96-98 Cobra Intake

Custom intake tube work

I too, think the stance is perfect. It has the stock air ride, that Aric has tweeked to not air up as much as a normal Mark. He did this with his FordStar NGS tool via the onboard computer. He said you can read about what he did in the 98 Mark Ford Workshop manual.

I need to have Aric install a manual switch in it, so I can raise it up some when on the interstate. It will scrape some on overpasses and bumps at highway speeds.

Posted by: papa bear

Cool.I have seen this build online and it is very impressive, congrats on the fine work.

Posted by: mlschultz

The bottom end is done, and back at Aric's shop. Here are the pictures of it. I do not have the spec's on everything, but I asked Ryan some general questions, and he said it has a forged steel crank shaft, and all the stuff I mentioned before like the 302 stroker, Manley rods and pistons, ARP bolts, etc. The heads and cams are still at Pro Line, and as soon as they are done, Aric is going to put all this stuff together.

Posted by: kustomizingkid

Those internals look sweet!

Couldn't clean the outside of the block though... lol

Posted by: mlschultz

Thanks, It machine work and assembly looks real nice in person. If this is any indication, I will be very happy with the reliability, and the power it will make. lol Yep, looks a little scaly now

Posted by: mlschultz

Heads are done, and back at Aric's shop. He is good to go now for the engine build after the Fun Ford event here in Atlanta.

Posted by: NYC LS8

Awesome, man. Can't wait to see that thing run again at SSHS8.

Posted by: Sal329

That is pure beauty

Posted by: AbrahamLincoln

beautiful - i wish i had more money!

Posted by: Scorpio1118_2000

incredible ride good luck with it and let us know when the mag hits the stands.

Posted by: 98LSC32V

That motor is beastly, should easily make 500rwhp...

Posted by: mlschultz

Thanks, guys! I am really looking forward to SSHS8 - the shootout is the best event you will ever see if you like big 4000 lb cars racing down the 1/4 mile. I hope to be somewhere in the mid-high 11's this year with all the changes being done.

Here is the skinny on the heads and cams - they are 96-98 Cobra heads and cams that were freshened up. They were disassembled and cleaned, surfaced, and the valve tips were machined - valve job. The valve guides are new bronze, and were sized and matched to valves and the spring height has been set using new hardened valve spring shims. Everything was done to safely spin the motor at 7k rpm, and beyond...?

Posted by: mlschultz

Here are a couple photos at SSHS7, and the best run of the day video. Enjoy!

SC Mark VIII SSHS7

Posted by: slowmkviii

nice vid were the lights delayed or were you sleeping on the tree

Posted by: devilchild

either way he still smoked the guy from Jersey !!

Posted by: mlschultz

No snoozing for me that day But, I have been known to do that once in a while lol... We were bracket racing, and I was spotting the chevy a tenth or two by the looks of it. I ran him down on the big end even though I won it on the tree because he red lighted, and I even broke out running him down. Sweet victory when that happens.

Posted by: Markviiiedrea

Wow Sex-e!

Posted by: mlschultz

Update - Will from Ford Builder magazine had a photo shoot of Aric building the motor at Injected Engineering today. Aric tore down the entire bottom end, and started over with the bare block for Will to shoot pictures from the very beginning.

We had a great day, and it was a real pleasure meeting Will. He is very well informed with the mn12 & fn10 chassis. He drove his really nice t-bird super coupe here, and he has more t-birds back at home.

Aric took it as far as he could, and really wanted to have the chains on it today, but wanted to put new tensioner's on the motor, so he has a new list of parts for Ryan to hunt down.

So, it should be very soon now for the new motor swap. Here are some pictures...

Posted by: ford nut

Looks nice....that motor screams 11's sitting on the stand.

Posted by: Markviiiedrea

I'm drooling! nice man keep em comeing.

Posted by: Goddard-MarkVIII

Sick dude free issues to all forum users?

Posted by: ONEBADMK8

NICE stuff.

Posted by: mlschultz

Thanks, Everyone I will be happy with mid 11's - I have no plans for a roll bar going in the Mark. The track I go to will send you home if you run a 11.49 with no roll bar.

Will has not scheduled a date yet for the magazine. He said once the car is done, and has been on the dyno, he will then do the feature pictures of the outside of the Mark and wrap things up. More to come...

Posted by: GMAN

So, when you are done, what will the displacement be? Will it be considered a 5.0?

Posted by: driller

I don't see any beer in the cooler!

LOL!

Posted by: mlschultz

GMAN, Aric has the build sheet, but 5.0 is close enough. I believe he said the other day that it was bored 20 over.

lol JP Aric was bitching about that thing the other day. He filled it up, and everyone empties it for him. So, his friend Bobby is going to get him another one that is coin operated and dispenses bottles, so he can fill it up with beer, and the moochers will have to contribute to the fund to restock it if they are thirsty. Knowing him though, he will leave the key in it and everyone will help themselves anyway...

Posted by: mlschultz

Update - I dropped the Mark off at Aric's shop last Friday. He is going to take the motor out, and send some parts to be powder coated, and transfer other stuff from the old motor to the new motor.

Will Smith is going to come back to Aric's to shoot photo's of the completed engine, then, come back again and shoot the feature photo's of the car when it is ready to go on the dyno.

I understand that the plan is to feature the Mark in a special edition of Super Rod magazine, that will focus on late model cars.

While the engine is out of the car, the engine bay is going to be cleaned up and made nice and purdy for the new motor. And, Aric has a couple sets of Mustang rims with slicks that are going to be test fitted on the back of the Mark, to get an idea of how wide of a slick tire can be fitted in the wheel well.

I am going to try and get a set of off the shelf Mustang drag rims if I can. If not, Ryan has a vendor that will custom make some drag rims.

The goal here, is to shoot for everything to be done and dialed in by the rescheduled Atlanta Fun Ford Weekend event, on June 13, 14, 15.

Posted by: Joeychgo

Congrats man! Sneak in a mention of LVC will ya?

Posted by: MediumD

This is an awesome setup man... wish I had the cash to drop like that. Although the pics do make me appreciate my pushrod V6 I'm putting back together now (spent 8 hours on mildly porting 6 exhaust ports today.) I have the same harbor freight engine stand, too

Posted by: mlschultz

Thanks Guys. Joey, I am going to try and get Will to mention all the boards that I frequent. They all deserve props in my book. No way I would have ever done this without all my cyber friends helping me out with their vast knowledge, resources, and inspiration.

Ryan called me today, and said the motor is out of the Mark! Waiting for the cam covers to return from powder coating, and then transfer the accessory parts over to the new motor.

Will is going to come back and take a couple more photos of the complete engine assembly, and then come back again when the Mark goes to the rollers for the dyno session, and the final photo shoot of the car.

All this is going to take place before Fun Ford Weekend at Atlanta Dragway - June 14th. I will try and get over to the shop tomorrow to take some pictures.

Posted by: mlschultz

Oh the carnage... lol Take a look at all my junk scattered all over the place.

Some stuff is going to be pulled off the old motor - like the front cover, and get a chemical bath to make it look like new again.

Ryan has to go over and pick up the powder coated cam covers (used a pair of Aric's covers that I am trading him for}, and he is calling the Bradshaw Bros. and PI to see if they can either ship me a triple disc in a week and a half, or at least tell me if there is any chance the single disc in it now will survive at the track with the new motor.

Crunch time... Ryan found a extra set of 16" steel rims and MT slick's off my friend Steve's Marauder that bolted right up to the Mark. Just need to get one inner tube replaced, and see what Steve will sell them to me for. I have not seen them, but Ryan said they have a spare tire look to them - just much wider than my 255's I had on the stock rims. Here is a link to some more photos:

What converter are you running?

Posted by: Markviiiedrea

Posted by: mlschultz

Update - A lot has happened since lunch time today. The old motor is now torn down, and there is no obviously hurt pistons or valves found.

Aric is going to totally tear down the to the bare heads and block to see why there was compression loss in number 7 cylinder - not that it matters to me, but he wants to do it anyway.

He was able to get a hold of Vickie at PI this afternoon, and she is going to ship me a new 3600 stall triple disc torque converter, while Aric boxed up my PI 3600 single disc TC and shipped it back to her today. Hope to see the new triple disc here next week!

And, since the car is already taking up the lift, he is going to take out the Focus fuel pump and replace it with a Ford GT fuel pump to get that out of the way. I posted more pictures of the old motor in my prior post link, along with a picture of the Marauder slick that I am going to use at Fun Ford.

108k miles on the old motor in the pictures below. Mobil 1 oil since I purchased the car with 50k miles, and Royal Purple since supercharged at around 100k miles.

Posted by: mlschultz

Here is a list of parts that are going on the car, that were not part of the original engine build quote.

All of these extra parts are for added durability, or to help reach the goal of somewhere in the 500rwhp range - *enough power to run a 11.5 time at the track all day long.

There is no roll bar in the Mark, so that 11.5 time is where I have to stop if I plan to race it at Atlanta Dragway.

Another update... Will Smith is going to be at Aric's shop tomorrow to finish the engine build photo shoot. I am going to stop by and take some more pictures of the progress also.

The cam covers are back from powder coat, and look cool. They are flat black with a wrinkle type of finish. Kinda looks like a new BBQ grill with a textured finish. I think it is going to offset all the shiny stuff - polished tube work, polished Cobra intake, polished ACCUFAB TB, and polished Vortech compressor real good.

I have a choice of plaques that go on the COP cover - The stock black/shiny letter "InTech 32 valve" one, or a Cobra one that has shiny silver/darker silver letters "32 Valve V8" Any opinions on which one to use?

Once the photo shoot is done, the motor is going in the car as soon as the PI TC arrives. The Ford GT fuel pump still needs to go in also. I will post some pictures tomorrow

Posted by: poniesviii

I vote "32 valve V8"

Progress looks great..

Posted by: shiryu0

i like the intech better, the engine is still in a lincoln

question: why use the early cobra pump? isnt the 99+ the one with the updated impeller?

Posted by: mlschultz

Still not sure which plaque to use. I need to put them on the cover and make up my mind. It is split so far when asking everyone what they think.

I need to see why they are putting on that water pump, and if they feel a 99 Cobra water pump flows better. Thanks for the heads up!

Will Smith finished up the engine photo shoot with Aric today. He said the motor should be in the car by Friday.

Looks real nice, but Aric is going to tear it all back down and redo everything - without the audience, to make sure he does not miss anything.

He is going to replace the heater hose pipe that would not budge, new alternator, add the new Cobra IMRC controller because the Mark VIII bracket was not even close to fitting the Cobra intake, and a couple missing chain guides that he put old ones on to keep the photo shoot going.

I have added more pictures to the following link, and pasted some below.

http://picasaweb.google.com/papapeac...34351729977154

Posted by: poniesviii

I have my vote because intech is lincoln's word for their 4.6 recipe on tune etc. Which you've successfully ridded of. It's not an intech anymore, it's better, man... lol.

Posted by: driller

Find some stainless steel and have a custom one made with a CNC water jet. You could even use a contrasting color material for an inlay.

Posted by: mlschultz

I really want to keep the plaque/emblem stuff to a minimum. I already have three Cobra's in the engine compartment - one on the Vortech bracket, another on top of the intake, and Geno's Cobra Snake/Lincoln Star. I will probably loose the first two, and just keep Geno's is my thinking at the moment.

I am leaning more towards the V8 32 valve plaque because it is silver vs. the gloss black InTech that no longer matches the flat black covers. Something custom might come down the road, but for now, I am trying to keep a low profile strictly business/factory appearance.

Posted by: 98CobraStarLSC

Did you modify the Cobra intake at all? Like shorten the Runners or use IMRC deletes? Just curious... Also what did you do to polish the cobra manifold? looks amazing man, cant wait to see the final product! Congrats!

Posted by: mlschultz

Thanks There are a couple mods to the intake, but the runners and IMRC's have been left alone - I need as much torque as I can get. I did switch to a new Cobra IMRC controller though.

I purchased the intake from Jeremi, and it was already polished, and the TB intake area was opened up to accept the single blade ACCUFAB throttle body pictured below.

Aric had to trim and weld shut the intake EGR, so the fuel rail would fit. I posted a picture of that also, before he welded it up today. He is going to buff the intake cover again, and make it real shiny when he is done cleaning up the weld.

Posted by: mlschultz

Here is the lunchtime update - Assembly is complete except for a couple fittings. Going in the car this afternoon! Updated pictures in the link, and a couple that show the progress.

Posted by: m_maker

Mike, I like the way Aric thinks. I call it "smart spending". Sure it's easy to spend money, but spend it in all the right places.

It's ever more noble when he's doing that with customer's money. Props to you guys !

Posted by: mlschultz

Thanks, Jeremi. I can't say enough good things about Aric. He is going to go very far with his business. His completed work speaks for itself.

Aric had to make a executive decision today. His business enterprise is expanding, and he is doubling the size of his shop this weekend. So, that means the Mark has to come down from it's perch on the lift, and become a "roller" being towed by his golf cart so he can knock down a wall tomorrow.

He is going to come in on Monday - his day off (they are actually open Tue - Sat) to install the motor. Here are some pictures of his new space, where he is going to have more lifts, and his dyno from his other shop put in. He will finally be under one roof Here are some pictures. Congratulations, Aric, on the new space!

New motor is in the Mark! Link has been updated too with more pictures.

Great thread. Great build. Looks like it gonna be wicked. Honestly most inspiring thing ive seen. Makes me want to keep workin hard to get my mark where I want it to be.

Posted by: Scorpio1118_2000

sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

Posted by: Markviiiedrea

those studs on the hubs look odd are the from a cobra? or is the picture just messing with me?

other wise looks awesome! cant wait to hear it!

Posted by: mlschultz

Thanks, Guys Good eye on the wheel studs. Not the stock studs. They are hardened ARP racing wheel studs. Aric had to machine the new Cobra front hubs to make the ARP wheel studs fit.

Posted by: Scorpio1118_2000

How much money do you think your mark is worth now? You have come along way with this beauty, are you going to get the gen2 hood or leave it stock on the outside save for the wheels and stoppers?

Posted by: MarkVIII93

I dont know if this car will be a sleeper anymore. It might be hard to keep whats under the hood a secret now. lol

Posted by: MonsterMark

I'm pretty sure this Gen 2 Mark might have a Gen 2 hood. We'll leave the stupid 'cowl' hoods for you Gen 1 guys to tool around in.

Posted by: mlschultz

More pictures loaded. See the link in my prior posts.

How much money do I think the Mark is worth now? lol, It is priceless to me.

I am trying now to find a specialty car insurance underwriter to have a rider drawn up to insure it now for actual replacement value. Kelly Blue Book value will not work for me anymore

The Mark is not much of a sleeper. The blow off valve and the whistle of the Vortech kind of give it away when I am rolling along. At a stop light during idle is when it is at it's quietest.

No plans to alter the body. Painting the bumper, and touch ups are about it.

Posted by: Markviiiedrea

I saw the AN fittings, are you running flex tranny cooler lines? did you have to make them? what kind of cooler?

Posted by: mlschultz

Here is a picture of the braided SS trans cooler lines. The cooler is a OEM Ford truck plate type. All custom work - done by Injected Engineering, and Bradshaw Bros. - (transmission builders)

Actually I am a proud owner of an ivory pearl 98 lsc so dont assume, I was just curious as what his next mod might be.
personally I would rather have a tasca supermark hood, it looks way better than the cobra r hood.

The punch list is real short now, so it should be running very soon. Right now, the throttle cable and manifold bracket is the focus item. Aric does not like the idea to butcher up a Mark bracket to make it fit the Cobra intake, and the Cobra bracket does not work well with the Mark throttle cable. I suspect he has to find a Cobra throttle cable, but who knows what he plans to do...

Once the car is completely done, Will is going to finish his photo shoot of the outside of the car, and then finish his story. I do not know the scheduling of the magazine, but I will post the date when I find out.

Congrats Mike.

Break it in the right way and then swing for the fences.

Thanks, Bryan. lol I know I will probably run out of fuel before anything, but hopefully should be enough for me to run mid 11's.

Very happy day Aric is running it through a couple full cold/hot/cold cycles to make sure everything seals up and there are no leaks. He has a real fat tune in it now also. The tables between the old setup and new setup are not even close, so these are idle only heat cycles.

Once the Mark passes the no leak test, Aric is going to tear it down, and hit the shiny stuff with the buffer, fuss around with some vacuum lines, and make it look purdy.

Then, put it back together and on to the dyno!

Here is the first Super Rod Magazine article that you can view online now of the Mark's engine build. This is the August 2008 issue of Super Rod, that you can find a Barnes and Noble, and other book stores. There will be a follow up feature done when the Mark is all done.

PS: Thanks again to Aric and Will for making this all happen!

Thanks, Guys I had no idea it was going to press until I stopped by Aric's shop yesterday. Ryan handed me the magazine and pointed to the bottom left corner of the cover, and there was Aric's picture of him working on the Mark's motor.

I laughed, and then he opened it and showed me the article. WOW, that was a cool moment. Had a grin on my face for the last two days now

BTW, Click on the download button to see the actual magazine article and all the pictures and comments. It launched a PDF file that I viewed in Adobe Reader.
