So I filled out a form the other night, looking for a price quote for a high output alternator. Needless to say, I was stunned by the price tag. I don't know, but this seems a little excessive to me. Then again, I never have bought a high output alternator, so I don't really know.
Application : 96-98 Lincoln Mark VIII 4.6L
HO Part Number : 61120A
HO Rating : 200 Amp
Our suggested solution to your power needs:
1. Replacement Alternator 200 Amp Alternator Part # 61120A
Our alternator will directly replace the stock alternator, and interface directly to your car’s computer. No need for brackets or messing with the wire harness. The only change you will make is the output from the alternator to the battery. We recommend 4 gauge or larger.
2. Freight DHL Ground US alternator approx. $21
DHL Second US alternator approx. $50
DHL Overnight US alternator approx. $65
DHL Canada alternator approx. $90
HO alternators are custom built to work with your vehicle’s computer and existing brackets. Please anticipate a three week delivery time due to our current backlog of orders.

Geez, I would just mount another alternator in there for that price! And for a couple extra amps? I think not!
Last I paid $100 to have a re-wrap of one for my Mark V. Added 30 amps.
Oops, I just realize it said it was for a 2000-2005, but honestly, did ford change the motor design?

Well I have an 04, so for me, it will work
The problem would be the valve cover. Bolt locations are a little different I think.

Have you called Max? I'm sure Max can beat that price...

That is an outragous price even if it is custom

Why in the world would you need a 200amp alternator? The standard one is rated 130. Before you buy, you should also check the current rating when the alternator is hot. As they heat up, output drops. Considering that the 200 must pack more wire into the small case, it is less able to dissipate heat. Bet the output when hot isn't much more than the Ford alternator.

So I like my music a little louder than normal, from time to time. What better way to change the appearance of the so called "grandpa car" than to have a little thump from the trunk.

Thanks again Rich...
96 the stock Mark alt is a 120amp and list is $209.07 plus the 60.00 core. Your cost would be $156.80 plus the 60.00 core. The cobra alt is a 130 amp and list is $226.85 +60.00 core and cost you $170.74 plus the core.
I have not seen a 200amp one through ford.
We had an outfit in Texas do some 300 amp ones for the ambulances and they were in the 4-500 range.

There is a problem with having someone rewind your alt for you. Typically, they only have more output at higher RPM and less at lower RPM. A custom built one will give you idle performance. Try Gus @ Ohio Generator, his number is 330-875-6677. Little cheaper, good alt.
