95 sedan de ville oil pump

I've been getting a msg saying "low oil pressure"...."stop engine". After checking oil its a half qt low so I add it. Still got msg so I take to mechanic and he informs me I need an oil pump. Self diagnostic didn't return code confirming same. Question I have is does this sound correct and how much should replacing this item cost?
