Gears Hwy: What Speed/RPM Do You Drive At?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

On my way to phx. I try to keep it at or around 2K. Which ends up being 60-70 mphs. Which I am going 8-10mph slower. Do not have the speedo gear changed. So, whats safe. Is this normal for 3.73?

I've had my car up to 3000 RPM for extended periods and it's been fine.

I just don't like driving at 3k when its an xtended time. Short bursts is enough for me. . .

i would think that 2500 is fine, and 2800 is fine crusing

i go around 2k - 2500 rpm a little bit higher and when I let off. It does a little jerk. . .

If you plan to cruise at 3000 rpms, definately do a force lube, or your tailshaft bushing will enentually go bye-bye. Also, the IMRC's open at 3000, so you'll be right on the cusp of 4-valve intake/exhaust...this usually happens at 84 mph in a stock Mark VIII, and your fuel ratio curve changes dramatically. Your MPG will drop big time at 3000 rpm cruising speed, unless you have a chip.

Stock gears in a Mark VIII base, 74 mph is 2000 rpms. You couldnt ask for a better cruising speed.
