Hello, my name is chad... i am brand new to this forum! but not to forums i am a member on hmt.com and some random sports forums i am not a newbie just asking for answers i searched the forum and could not really find the answer so i joined up and thought i would give posting a try and see if someone could help me out!!!! i will help on this forum and post...

Well the other morning i went out to my 2000 lincoln ls and started it up and it was idleing like crap sounded like i had put some big ass cams in it... i have not had a problem before... so i got in thinking that it might have been cold or needed some new gas... but once i got driveing the check engine light came on so i called a mechanic friend and droped it off... he said it was saying Cyl. 4 misfireing so he replaced that coil and all the plugs and then called me and said it was running better but still rough... i told him to keep it and fix it... he couldn't figure out what was wrong!! (there went 250dollars) so i took it back to the dealership and they went threw some things and after about 4 hrs of work replaced the injector (there went 106dollars) and still not running right!! i am very tempted to take it to the lincoln dealership her and spend an arm and a leg or get rid of it!!! But i Love my LS!!!! so i was wondering if anyone had ran into this problem... i was looking in my manual and searching here... no luck!! PLEASE HELP!!!!

ALSO doesn't anyone know what an SSP4 relay is!!! heard they were for the coils just checking!!!!

thanks

No Idea on the relay, but sometimes the coils will go bad and not throw a CEL for a while. I drove around for 4 weeks with a random misfire before it gave me a CEL. And there are others here who have gotten CELs quickly, but the codes were for the wrong coils. Try swapping the new coil/coils to a different plug and see if it changes.

thanks for the help!!! please keep the post coming

Replace the all the coils and spark plugs. And if there is oil in the plug wells then replace the valve cover gaskets with a new vcg kit.

Take it to a dealership and have them run a diagnostic to check which specific coil is bad, and just replace that one. Thats the cheapest way, but not the smartest.

Keep in mind, it's a good chance that it's time for your valve cover gasket to be replaced anyways, as it's probably leaking oil into the plugwell, which is what probably has killed your coil in the firstplace. So if you have any oil in your plugwell, you need to have the gasket replaced...or the oil will simply keep killing your coils.

So..with all this in mind? Best to take it in, have your valve cover gasket checked for leakage. If its leaking (probably), have them replace it, replace all your plugs, and replace only the coil thats bad. Thats how I would do it.

idle problem... idle air motor? I've replaced a couple in Ford's 4.6, but I don't know about the LS. Course if it's running bad obviously you've got more problems...

I agree with lseguy, except that you might as well replace all of the coils while you have the engine apart. Since the coils are notorious for going out on our gen 1s. I just ordered a set of coils and gaskets since I am having a misfire in cyl #2. So I am just going to replace all of them and the gaskets. Its a little more expensive now, but it will (hopefully) save me from having to change another coil later.

Sometimes you have to shotgun things, ie replace everything.

I had my 2004 LSV8 in last year for coils. NO check engine light was shown. The dealer took 2 weeks trying to figure out which coil needed to replace. They would replace one and then the problem seemed to move to another. Since it was under warranty I guess Ford goes cheap and replaces one at a time.

In the end it cost them more than just replacing all the coils. 2 Weeks of labor plus 2 weeks of Rental car had to cost way more than just replacing the coils all at once.

Glad I didn't have to pay for it.

Now I am out of warranty and kind of dread if this problem ever comes up again. Unless I get a solid code, I will probably wind up replacing all.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Not a bad deal if you do decide to go all 8. For this price, I'd personally probably do just that if I were in your shoes..

The coils sound like the problem, but have you checked to see if your air filter is plugged up?

thank you guys for the replies... the thing i don't understand is that when i bought the car i replaced 2 coils and then this is the third... what runs the coils is it the computer or a relay????
