This is the Hot Rod Lincoln Mark VII. I know there are a lot of people who love these things and hey, when they work right, they are really really nice cars. Quite honestly, I’m sick of fixing it. Brand new suspension air bags, new window motor, new door lock doodad, new stereo with CD player, new who knows what else, it’s never enough. This car is like a chick who finds out you have a bank account. OK here we go with the latest round. I stop for gas, fill the tank, get in the car, turn the key, and roor….roorr...roor and then roor….>click< Now all I get is >click<. SOOOOOOoooooo I take public transportation home, come back with my truck, try the truck battery in the car. Nothing doing. So I take the battery out of the car, take it home, charge it for a few hours, put it back in the car, still nothing doing. I believe it needs a starter. If you take this car, IT MUST BE TOWED.Either that or you can put a starter in it where it sits and drive it away. I’ve done that, but those days are over.
UPDATE: I had it towed home, it’s in a parking lot off the street now. If you’re up for taking it home and fixing it, grab it, the thing is actually a nice car. The a/c blasts cold, the cruise control is nice to have, it goes like hell if you want it to, it’s got the power seats and all the crapola they put on the Lincolns. If you manage to do a lot of freeway driving with no traffic, the beast will actually decent gas mileage, too. I’ll even throw in a couple extra stereos and speakers for it. And extra wheel cover center caps ($60 a pop at the dealer). And a couple extra emblems for when you are drying the car and the emblem falls off or you break it. When it’s not pissing you off, it’s a very nice car.
OK you know what you’re getting into, come and get it. I live near LAX. 90245 Comes with a full tank of gas. Dammit. There’s a cult member out there someplace who wants this car.

Amen!

The Lincoln Mark VII Club accepts donations.

When can we come pick it up?

Posted by: 1bad4.6l

if he wont put forth the effort take IT!

I said "sell the thing", not "donate" it. I need to get $2K back out of this beast. I'm angry, not stupid.

Well, gee I dunno about that... I had several people, here, read your post...they all got the same impression that you were giving it away.

If that text were in the classified section of a paper, you'd have people lining up for the Freebie!
For F*ck's sake! you didn't even mention the year of the car!

You don't mention a price, what-so-ever, thAt's what is stupid.
I think you bought an old car that has special maintenence needs that you didn't research. These cars are getting to be for collectors and fans who certainly understand their special needs and possible technical repairs.

I suspect you're near the end of the major stuff, so don't be such a whiner, check the starter relay or change the starter...and quit crying.
What do you think you're playing at?
Anyone who buys an older car without knowing exactly what they're buying is asking for trouble or bills from someone else who does the work you don't want to do...pick one!

Are you sure you car is where you left it?

Thanks, OS, that's the kind of support I'd expect on a board like this. We're supposed to help one another.
As for anyone who wants to talk down to me like I'm some kind of rookie, I say until you successfuly run down, buy, and install a heater for a 1938 LaSalle, don't try to lecture me about restoring cars. This LSC is in no way what I consider to be a vintage car. It's a recent model (91) that I expect to be driveable daily with a reasonable amount of maintenance. I was willing to drive my truck around while I was fixing it. Restoration is something that involves driving to another state for the Grand National and scoring 59 Cadillac tail light assemblies and maybe a horn ring if you get lucky, things of that nature.
I'm just sick of this money burning beast and I refuse to give it any more money. Quite honestly, I'd rather be sinking moolah into a 67 GTO and then I'd actually have a nice snazzy vintage car.

By the way, last go-round I bought way too many 59 Cadillac tail light lenses and tail light assemblies (with wires and lenses), some Guide, some not, so if someone is looking.....

Omicron... you said it in your title, "CULT" yup, we are crazy in love with these automobiles...and yes, it is insane, and yes, we do sink dollar after dollar, hour after hour....

Even I was at the point where I was ready to give up, that was on my 1st Lincoln. When I got in an accident and totaled it I went looking for another car .....test driving car after car...then putting a car salesman into thearpy when I broke down and started bawling during a test drive...calling his car a overpriced piece of 5hit while banging on the steering wheel, tears coming down like a stream (yeah he is still in thearpy), I finally realized, nothing else compares, I don't want anything else, and began a search for another Mark VIII. Yeah, I'd call that crazy, and maybe a bit stupid too cause I dont have a lot of $ to throw around...but ya know, the happiness my Mark brings me is well worth the struggle to keep him on the road....oh yeah, can't forget the fringe benefits like getting to play with Hotties like OldSchool, Rich, 1bad, and all the others that have posted and are in LVC. lolol

I sure hope one way or the other we get ya straight and happy

Its a shame that a 87 to 93 stang is worth so much but a lincoln which is a better car is barely worth anything but good for people like us who know what they are and want to keep them going

Have to agree with you Papa Bear...

But in my opinion... It's our benifit... just think how much we save because of that...

OK.
Since this thread has been officially hijacked (and it wasn't by me this time) then I feel better about typing about something not related to the subject.

The "worth" topic has popped up a few times and each time, I have to say the same thing.

"Your car is only worth what someone else will pay for it."

I own PINKIN; a verified one of a kind 1986 Lincoln Mark VII. I couldn't PAY most people to take this car because it's, well, PINK. After following the car for five years, I picked it up Christmas Eve of 2006 for what I would consider A SONG. I would have gone as high as about $25,000.00 to preserve this car.

1986 Ford Mustangs are currently topping out at $5000.00 on Ebay. You couldn't pay me to own one (again). If someone posts a mint 86 with 19,600 miles on it (like PINKIN), I bet that someone would pay upwards of $12,000.00 If it is a verified one of a kind, then there's probably one person that would pay upwards of $25,000 to preserve the car.

Rant over.

I'm gonna go play with my toys.

Thanks girlfriend. I wish I could have seen your face when you first walked up to the car
I agree. PINKIN is not for you

If PINKIN were put on EBAY today, it wouldn't bring more than $5,000.00

If PINKIN were put on Barrett-Jackson today, it wouldn't bring more than $25,000.00

Although I don't plan on selling it, EVER for ANY price, it would be cool to live 50 more years and see what it would bring at auction

You're welcome.
The hijacking was a group effort

I hope Dude decides to keep the car. I'd really feel bad if he went through the entire selling process like three times, just to find out that the car could sell at his asking price if he were to first correct the problems that he mentioned here.

Posted by: MsM8tress

Your so right OldSchool!!! I have had so many people stop me, or roll their window down, or tell me at a car show - "I had one of those...sure wish I'd a kept it".

I've known lots of people who had a Mark and sold it...not one has said it was a smart decision to get rid of it.

Actually, there are 2 Mark owners here (one a Mark VII one a Mark III) that HAD for sale signs in their window....well, if you know me...I'm stoppin, talked them both into keeping them. Both have not only kept their Marks, but have begun restoration to make them show room clean!

Lol, I knocked on the door, guy answered, I stuck my hand out and said..."the keys please", he said, "oh...you would like a test drive." (drewlin over my MarkVIII), I said, "No, Im taking it, your unworthy" with a smile and a laugh. Then I ask him to pop the hood and tell me about it...that was almost 2 years ago, we are good friends now and he is soooooo happy he kept is Mark III ! Me too (his engine is still blue!!).

Smooches!

Ah it's ok you guys are posting on this thread, I don't mind. It's like any conversation where anyone walking by is eligible to join. Happens to us all the time, the conversation takes a turn a different way, then veers someplace else. It's no big deal guys, you can take this any direction you want.
MsM8- - -to answer your question, the beast has been sitting in one place, I hose and towel it off once a week so it doesn't look abandoned. I also turn the key on every couple days to get the stoooopid air bags to fill up. Yeah, I have to yank the battery out and charge it once in a while. Hey look guys, Cadillac tried that airbag bandini half a century ago. It didn't work then and it doesn't work now. WHAT were they thinking when they decided to use that retro technology?
What sold this car to me was it is RWD and American. That, and I was sick of running around looking for a car. So I end up with a planter. I'm done with Cadillacs, they crossed over to the dark side in the 80s. If front wheel drive is so great, why are there no front wheel drive trucks? Hmmmm?
I still don't like this moneyburning beast.

Oh here's a good one: Nice Lady sprung for a 3 year old Town Car a couple weeks ago. She's on cloud nine. She's still going out there listening to the CD that says how to operate the 2 way sneeze through wind vents and adjust the star studded mudguards.

For every one guy that complains about the suspension, there are ten of us that have no complaints...think about that, and you might get something out of it. Also, Caddy went to FWD in the late 60's, not the 80's.

I'm glad that you have a level head and open mind and are NOT taking any of this seriously or to heart.

I've debated Bags vs Springs for years. There's a ton of people that swear by steel springs. There's a ton of people that swear by air springs. There's support of either configuration. The end result is always that a Mark VII owner will do whatever it is that they want to do with their vehicle. That's cool.

I'm pro air spring.
They're like tires.
They go flat.
They get properly replaced.
They last another 15 years.
They get improperly replaced.
They last 15 minutes.

I'm well aware of the Eldos, I have had 67s and 71s, oh, and a 70 and a 72 and a 75 ragtop. All were mistakes. Neat looking cars, but mistakes. And they were the only FWD Cadillacs back then. What I meant was Cadillac went over to the dark side completely when I went to buy an 85 CDV and looked under the hood and saw that pathetic transverse mounted engine , revealing the FWD factor. My friend has a fairly new FWD Fleetwood and the driving chamber is not big enough for me. No place to put my left leg. I'm done with Cadillacs.

Kind of like this LSC mistake I own. I have to drive around with my head bowed, and it's not out of reverence. The seat doesn't go low enough to keep my head from hitting the ceiling. That was my major bitch when I had the 450SL lo, those many years ago. If the hard top was on, I'd have to duck to drive.

Somewhere there's a 67 Pontiac with my name on it. GTO or GP, maybe Barneville.

OOOH MsM8tress (Debi) They must have been jealous of your love of your Lincoln, their loss! Damn, if I were single, I might visit you. That is of course you wouldn't mind a Mark VII MAN. BTW, which Columbus do you live in? As there are a few of them around the country.
Sincerly, Rick

Posted by: Ricks90billblass

To test your no start condition. try some thing simple like jumping across the starter soleniod behind the battery. From the post where the battery cable comes from the battery to the small terminal on the solinoid that you have to pull the wire off to uncover it. Does the engine crank or does the starter click/clunk? if the engine cranks, your problem is in either the ignition switch (base of the steering column) or the neutral safety switch. located on the tranny. (If I remember it just screws into the tranny.)
If the starter clunks/clicks it can be a defective starter or a bad connection or low voltage. The voltage needs to be atleast 10.35 volts while cranking to operate properly. take the battery to Kragen/ Autozone etc.. and get it load tested.
When you turn the key what happens?
FYI I a sudden had a no start condition and tore my column apart to get to the switch, to find out I had not pushed the shifter all the way forward.

FONT="Garamond"]So against my better judgement, I did the fixes to this money sewer. It's now got a new starter, new alternator, new regulator, new Die Hard Gold battery, new water pump, new every hose in the cooling system, to include those leeeeetle molded ones ( I kept the old hoses for spares), new serpentine belt (kept the old one for a spare), new air bags, and the stooooooooopid trip minder now works.
So if any true believer wants to put their money where their keyboard is, it's still up for grabs. It's near LAX.
Happy New Year.

Josh,
I forgot to comment on this.
What I wanted to add to this is that after people change to steel springs, we normally don't hear from them again. People that properly replace their rubber products with new rubber products, tend to stick around and continue to participate in the suspension conversations.

So if any true believer wants to put their money where their keyboard is, it's still up for grabs. It's near LAX.

With all due respect, I've been watching this car since it was first listed locally. Yes, I'm in the area. As a twenty year owner of a Mark VII and now owning several "money sewers" which I occasionally loan to friends while their friggin' Mercedes Benz's and Beemers are being continuously repaired, so they actually have something that runs, so they can shuttle trunk loads of money from the bank to their mechanics, I wouldn't have your car if I was paid to take it! Certainly, not after being called a cultist by the owner! If you are so pleased with it, run it off the Vincent St. Thomas bridge and buy a Mercedes!

There are TONS of nice Mark VII's that were properly maintained for sale at half the price in the Los Angeles area. How do I know? I have purchased several of these "money sewers" that continue to operate flawlessly on a daily basis. Quite frankly, I'm friggin' tired of your attitude, especially on a forum where you are insulting folks who actually see the value in these cars.

After the way you talk about it and your asking price, I suggest that you learn to like it, because you are going to own it for a long time!

Art Thinskin: Point out to me one place where I have insulted anyone on this forum. Go ahead, scroll up and look at all my posts. I'll wait. Now read through them and tell me where I insulted any person. Come on, tell me. Oh no, taking offense because I say what I think about a car I own doesn't count. I also have many choice words about one of my computers. OK now go back and show us all exactly where I insulted anyone here. Remember, cars don't count. Come on, show me. Hmmm.... can't, can you? That's because I've been polite to everyone here all this time. I could start making an exception in your case if you really want a conflict, but I have better things to do with my time.
Oh yeah, and Vincent Thomas was just a politician who managed to get a bridge built. He was far from a saint. He was an assemblyman from Pedro. Represented the fish factories. Or so he claimed. One of the arguments in favor of term limits.
Say goodnight, Artie.

I sure am glad that we belong to a CULT like you say, because at least we belong to a great cult of people. Unlike some one else we know. I'm glad that we own 5 of these and wouldn't change one of them for anything.

OK that's all, folks. I paid the money, I fixed this stooooopid car, air bags, water pump, alternator, starter, solenoid, silk purse tune up right down to the plug wires, new window motors, door lock doofloppy, I forget what else, mechanic says the brakes are good so don't mess with them when I told him I wanted ceramic pads, that was bothering me, but now the CC went out! This is it. This car is out of here. The CC servo is like $171 if you know where to buy it on line, but do you know you have to TAKE THE FENDER OFF to replace it??? That's all, folks. Somebody give me $2500 and take this rolling money toilet. A car without CC isn't worth owning. Hey, summer is coming, the a/c blasts cold. Oh and this car is not recommended for tall people. You have to duck your head to drive it, even with the seat lowered completely. Somebody wants this beast. Title is in my name, registered to July, come get it.

No need to take the fender off, you just pull out the plastic inner liner. I replaced mine 8-9 years ago when the piston in the servo broke, two months later it broke again. the Dealer replaced it and said that it will break again if I didn't replace the TV Cable and the Throttle Cable as the cables start to bind with age and the plastic inside the servo cannot handle the extra force. I am still using the servo I installed back then.
Plan "B" Get an Audiovox Cruise Control From Kragen for about $120. and wire it in I installed one in my Ranger P/U in 2000. Works great, Just solder the electrical connections.
Plan C, You come off as a borderline dickhead. When people offer you good help you shouldn't spit in there face.
Fact of life, any older car/truck takes time and money to keep running. I have replaced or rebuilt ALL of the parts you have, and more...
Maybe you should buy a brand new car that hopefully wont give you these problems.

What's with you people and the namecalling? I've been nothing but polite to everyone, including the ones who choose to call names, the only negativity I transmit is directed toward MY OWN CAR! What has this country come to when I can't bitch about my own car? Lemme guess......... you vote d'rat in elections..... Take control over peoples' speech, choice of cars, opinions, rights to express them, medical care, personal habits, food choices, shut anyone up who dares disagree with you any way you can, tax citizens into oblivion because the government knows best what to do with peoples' money, and indoctrinate all children into that mold.

Is your LSC the 1987 model? It looks exactly like the one I have, even same color! Only problems I'm having right now is I THINK the brake master cylinder is bad (curious thing though. Brake light hasn't come on at all!), door locks do not seem to work on driver's side, and the DTE light beeps EVERY time I start the car, and I can't seem to get it to stop doing this. Luckily, the master cylinder is only 21.00 at O'Reillys, with a 15.00 core charge. Other than these problems, I love my Lincoln. Wished you were in Tennessee, as I'd definitely give you $2,000 for it.

You want to get rid of the car because it no longer has cc? Are you kidding me? How's the public transportation there? Then you don't have to worry bout working on a car nor driving it, its all done for you.

Omicron, we all do what you are doing because we love our rides, when you insult yours, it's like your insulting ours. I know it sounds silly, but it is true.

I really hope you find something you enjoy.

I feel so sorry for your lincoln. You should give it to a charity that will find a needy family for it, you'd get a tax write off on the value of the car plus repairs.

Take care

I love the air ride and have replaced bags myself on VIIs and now my VIII. These cars are at least ten years old. Metal springs don't last much longer only when they fail the can handles like crap or maybe doesnt sit level anymore instead of slamming overnight like the air ride. And take a look at some of the 18 wheelers you see around most of them have airbags instead of metal springs.

It sucks that you have a money pit but even new cars have problems and after 10 or 15 or 20 years things wear out. If a car was maintained before you got it is usually not so bad but if not things can add up quick. I have had my VIII less then a year and have had to do rear bags, most of the front suspension, redo rotted brake lines, and more and now the trans is on it's way out. It sucks but I could be paying $500 a month for a new car.

Magic Al, I'm not frustrated, were you meaning Omicron?

I could not imagine driving anything but a MarkVIII. Actually when life seems to be rippin me a new one...I get in Tux (my Mark), go for a ride and the world seems a lot better.

If have to go out of town and suffer driving a rental, when I get home, the first thing I do is get in Tux, just to feel him against me again...even if I can't take him out (bad weather). Dang rentals...makes me feel like I am cheating on Tux.

Magic Al - how have you managed to be a LVC member for almost a year and only have one post! also - I see you live in WI, will you be attending Rich's meet in July?! It will be a blast and since you have been such a mystery member, maybe we will get the opportunity to see your Lincoln!

Hope to C U There!

Ten dollars at the theater or
Ten dollars at the local bar or
Ten dollars in my fuel tank.
hmmm
Today's films are rushed CG jobs.
Beer is only rented.
The feel of a cruise through the Pennsylvania hills and
valleys and cities in a well maintained Lincoln Mark VII
... hell, I feel better just talking about it.
