?? Day at the Track Spring Midwest Meet ??? let's Discuss??

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: mespock

OK Jason here it is... your chance...

I've been PMing with PatrickSimmons about doing a Spring meet at GLD (Great Lakes Dragway).

I tried this once before many moons ago and it feel through but with 02LSE96LSC.....etc's obsession with racing LOL... and a few other's Patrick and I thought it would be a good idea for a meet.

So Jason you should contact Patrick and start a discussion on this.

Also I would like to use this thread for more discussion.

It would be nice to try and do a meet this fall yet but it does take time to set up something nice more than a hey guys let's get together and race.

My original thought is an all day event were members meet up for breakfast and then get ready for the day at the track.

This meet would not mean that by attending you are required to race your car. You can either race or watch. But most of all have a great time with great people from LvC.

So the thread is open and discussion should commence...

Oh and I chose GLD because we have at least one member who frequents this place and knows the area well. Plus it is easy access to the freeway, and there Kenosha and Racine are close so there is plenty of eats and fun in the area. Also There are enough members within 3 hours of this place to make it an easy drive for those wanting to attend.

The Floor is open...

Point of discussion....

Date....

and

Activities....

An all day event sounds great to me.

Spring before all the big events would work out well. Do't want to go on a Import Wars Weekend. Also I remember 2 Ford fun days, one in spring and one in summer...that would be cool. Last time I went they gave me a flyer that I never even looked at, might have been the 08 schedule, I'll try to find it.

Posted by: PatrickSimmons

I checked their website but nothing about the 08 season yet.

Posted by: 02LSE96LSC91SE84TC

Checked my car, it was just another 07 schedule.

Posted by: PatrickSimmons

They'll probably put it up after they finish the season. I saw that they still have a couple more weeks left for this year.

I bet the events will be similar to the '07 season.... So you could start by looking at the '07 dates to start planning.

I'm betting that Jason is over this meet.. LOL

What do you mean if!! Hell that old Gen II LOL He'd be lucky if he did 15.1... my 94 has hit 14.6 without any mods..

I can take off in second and run a 13.7

Posted by: 93hotrodlincoln

Sounds like fun I went down to ford day #2 and it was lots of fun, lots of cool fords! The first ford day is in May but I am going to take my montego down there for that if I finish it this winter.(Smoke all of you) Or in April we could go the first week and race for free and save 35 dollars.

Posted by: 02LSE96LSC91SE84TC

We can do our own bracket race for money. We don't need the track to help just a honest person to write down your dial before you run, then after check your timeslip to add RT to the overage. Keep track all day winner takes all. Since there will be newbies a RED LIGHT just won't count instead of being knocked out.

I'm in.

Good competition for my LSE.

Posted by: mespock

This is what I want to see... good conversation on this thread. Jason I want you and Patrick to take the reigns on this. Patrick is coming to the Christmas Party.. I'm hoping that you will again also, 1 to have a great time and 2 for you to get together with Patrick and discuss this further. Get you LS guys out of the Suburbs and onto the track LOL.

Use this time to figure out a date... There seem to be good interest so I'm hoping that this time the Track Meet will be a good hit.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Some of us track our LS's. Not all are just interested in HID headlights, Lambo doors, and fitting the biggest subwoofer in the trunk.

If this happens I will probably be there with TurboLS provided I am not predisposed that day.

Suburbs??????????

Hey Rob your moneys green, I'll take it.

Posted by: chickenviii

ill be down for spring!!
rich, ill line up with ya, im actually "tinkering" (or planning to) with MY car, not to mention i hit 15.1's now, stock (even wit' my big ole ghetto blasta' in da' trunk )

Posted by: PatrickSimmons

I think the meeting for breakfast first would be a great idea.

Like I said, I have never been there so it's new to me but do they have picnic areas for grilling? Maybe we could do burgers and dogs for lunch or something.

For bracket racing??? Screw that!!! It is much easier to bracket race with a less powerful car! If we are bracket racing for money then I am bringing the Ranger. Besides, you usually "light" my azz anyways.

Give me a call if you want to go heads up.

Yes they do have an area where you can pull a trailer in the back grassy area past the pits and probably have a cookout there. I have never grilled there myself but I assume that would not be an issue.

Posted by: PatrickSimmons

It's just an idea if people wanted to make a full day out of it, especially if we get enough interest and people want to bring their families.

Posted by: mespock

This is sounding great.... we are getting good response. Now remember that this is early... We need to keep this thread active and the interest boiling.

How about getting all of you guys at the Christmas Party on Dec. 8th... we can discuss more and start up some friendly rivalries...

Hey you know why the chicken didn't cross the road? He had a Gen II....

Jason.... at your next visit to GLD see if you can ask in the office if they know of a good weekend in spring that we could do this? Or call them during the week.

What is going to be hard is setting a date that works for everyone.. (this just will not happen)... So when the date gets set please everyone remember we will do our best to make it fit the needs of all but from what I've learned with planning meets, someone will not be able to make the meet.

But if we can make this an annual event... as the Cubs say there is always next year.

Jason and Patrick.. once you find a date set it and then we'll stay with it. If you want to post a poll on 3 dates and do a vote that can work also.

Now the worse thing that can happen is like what happened last time I tried this. Lots of discussion and interst then everyone backed out. I put a lot of work into it.. bummer..

But this time it looks like we have a more excited group.. so let's getter done.

G-Techs are typically generous. I have the exct same one and have run it in the car against the timeslip to see how accurate it is. It usually is .3-.5 off so don't be surprized if that 14.6 is a 15.0 at the track. MPH is about 4-6 generous on mine. This makes 0-60 runs impressive but not real accurate. They're clever and fun but not the same as the track.

I was attempting to not feed the troll so i pulled my comment regarding your obviously superior DHS and modified your post to remove my comment.

Didn't want to turn your trolling into a hijacked thread.

Guess we'll have to keep the trolling in the PM area.

He might want to step up to a G-Tech Pro if he wants to post shots of his phenomenal runs.

I watched the you tube video. Definitely a 15.0 pass at 94 based on the stock gearing and shift point with your DHS.

Not bad for grandma's car.

Do you have to wear wrist straps to deal with the torque-steer?

G-techs are total crap. Nowhere near accurate enough for solid comparative analysis of the numbers. Posting G-tech times is like posting a dyno number and assuming an ET out of it. All a bunch of benchracing.

I use the G-tech for testing. I ran one program 5 times and got the same results. I changed programs and ran .88 slow twice. It came out

Well it appears this has died down a bit so I thought about a new idea.

If we can get enough turnout of each kind of cars (Lincoln, Cadillac) then maybe we can have something like a battle for the club. Like the team with the lowest overall time gets braging rights for the next year. We could even do something like Mark's vs LS's to have a inter-brand fight or something of that nature.

And if there were various prizes for diffent classes maybe this could help the turnout. Just a thought

Posted by: mespock

Well Jason 02LSE96LSC....etc and PatrickSimmons are are to take the ball on this.

I know GLD does do group parties. They also have picnic areas.. GLD website

We need someone to take this meet by the horns and get it rockin'

We have a few months to plan... GLD doesn't have it's 08 schedule up yet.

I know that I should have the weekend of Mark 15th open as the track meet scheduled for that weekend is in OH and I don't think I'll be going unless my daughter qualifies for Nationals... I don't think that is going to happen this year. I think the the weekend after will be free also..

So Hoping someone take this meet and runs with it.

Posted by: PatrickSimmons

Once they put up the schedule we will be able to throw some real dates out there for discussion.

Posted by: mespock

That's great...

In 2005 I tried putting together a GLD meet. Here is what I had planned...

That was a really good plan. We'll have to really push it. I've just started a real good relationship with one of the local Lincoln dealerships and he wants to help us out by letting us advertise the event and suggested some other avenues to get the message out to Lincoln owners.

Hopefully we can keep your 2005 dream alive

I'll watch also. The First Ford Fun day was mid April last year. I didn't even realize I was there. It wasn't much different than a normal day, maybe the summer one is better. Anyways like I said before picking a weekend day when there is no big event should work the best for us to all have fun. Spring will be easier as the closer you get to summer the more events are going nearly every weekend.

Definately don't want to go on a Import Day. Its fun to kick some butt on alot of them but likely a real piece of crap will surprize you and blow you away. Its fun watching them break axles and kill clutches at the line though.

Posted by: mespock

One thing to remember it the Beach Party... The date we need is something far enough away to make sure people who would like to do both meet can do so...

One of the problems with people coming to meets is travel and the cost to travel. If this is a Midwest meet then we have to make sure we are thinking about those who would like to come from other States...

This is why I would like the meet to be in the spring... My problem will be track meets.. I don't have the UWP outdoor track schedule yet so I don't know what meets I'll be able to go to yet.

Yes definately early. Spring will allow several dates for a option to see what works best for all. Summer the big events are nearly every weekend. Unless you want to stand around waiting to see the big boys run, I'd rather run my car as I think most would agree. And thats not to say that there won't be some cool stuff on a non big event weekend, just not jambed with them everywhere.

Posted by: papa bear

A track meet would be great and you guys can give me info on how it works.Spring would be the best time for this since i dont have a schedule or a track to run at i will leave it up to you guys to plan it..How are they for car inspections do they come down hard on slight leaks and center caps and stuff and what is the price to run

Its easy, no big deal at all. I could give the does and don't in 5 minutes. Inspection is relaxed on a stock looking car. Unless your obviously leaking I can't see it being noticed. If your leaking enough that in a single pass your leaving drips all over it would be safest not to run as a slick track is the worse thing to have. As far as the rest of the car unless something looks like its falling off they won't say anything, again on a near stock car, modified they look at more. Trucks they'll make sure there isn't crap in the bed that'll fall out or mud caked you in the wells that will fall all over the track first time down. Last year weekdays were $30 with weekends being $36 last few times I went $37 didn't understand that.

Knowing the basics is easy. A person that knows how to line up, stage, doesn't get lost at the end of the track and doesn't drive retarded in the pits blends right in no matter what you drive even if the car is slow.

A fast car that doesn't know any of the basics, drives right through the the lights, needs direction to line up and stage, doesn't know were to turn around and get back...etc. These are the people that people look at stupid and are dangerous.

Posted by: 02LSE96LSC91SE84TC

For people that are a little unsure at first they can do a ride along. I believe 1 passenger is allowed in a car as long as it doesn't break 14.000. Thats not to say your car can't be faster, just have to let off and not break 14.000. I've seen 9second cars take a passenger down WOT through the 1/8 and coast and brake the rest. I'd be willing to take a passenger along if its not crowded and I have plenty off time to get some good runs in too.

Posted by: mespock

Jason what was your grand total of runs this year...

I made about 80 passes this year, maybe 60ish last year. This based on slips I have, I know some of the weak ones got lost.

When I used to go I used to like to get alot of passes in even 10-15. Now I may only run 4 or 5 good runs when I go. Going for the new best, R/T and consistency, not so much to race others.

Posted by: Dmaup

I'll admit it. I've never raced on a track before but, I would love for this meet to happen that way I can get some time in with people that know these cars and get some pointers if I need them

But just because the date's arent out doesn't mean we can't plan things to do. It didnt seem to get much play but I really think a bragging rights kind of deal would be cool intrested to see what others think.

Pretty cool idea.

Posted by: mespock

As soon as the 08 schedule comes out we can get a date set. Then see how membes can work around the date.

We can make it a weekend event if people want to come from further away... ie.. MI, IN, OH, even IA, MO, or MN...

I had a campground all set up back in 05, and there is plenty of motels in the area.

Perosnally I'll be staying at my friends house. GLD is in his back yard... you can see the track from his deck...

Here it the 2008 GLD schedule...

So Jason and Patrick the ball has been served. Pick a weekend and go to it..... have fun LOL...

Opening weekend will be busy, but a possibility. I think the Ford Day #1 on the April 13th would be a good choice.

I mentioned a bracket type race that could be kept track of by us seperately from the track. Would be easy and fun, it could go all day.

Say papa bear dials in a 15.0 and runs a 15.350 with a R/T of .450. He'd be at .8 for his best.

Say Mespock and his 94 dials a 14.6 and runs a 14.9 with a R/T of .650. He'd be at .95 for his best.

Say I call 14.0 and run a 14.05 with a R/T of .100. I'd be at .105 for my best.

Person getting closest to .001 wins for the day.

Thing is you can change your dial all you want as long as someones keeping track and just come back with your slip so it can be recorded. This could go all day and while people with track practice will have some advantage at least it won't be fastest car wins.

Posted by: PatrickSimmons

Sounds like a plan Jason and thanks for the update Mespock.

Patrick and Jason... set the date and I'll make a calender date and a sign up for the meet.

Yes sir, you better believe it. Working on a date with Jason.

Posted by: mespock

That's what we need to get going in here. Talk about the fiero at the track or in another thread...

What do we want to do? I'm waiting on Jason to PM me with the best weekend as he knows GLD so well.

Then I'll post the date in the Meet information thread. I kept that thread closed as I don't want the meet discussion to be anything more than that. Fun and friendly with hype to get things going.

I'll be posting a sign up thread also as soon as I know the dates.

So hear is what we need... What do we want to do?

1. Meet for Breakfast and if so where?
2. Do we want to secure a meet area at the track. I believe that GLD has
areas where people can grill out and gather while they watch or race.
3. Do we want any friendly wagers? LS vs Mark VIII... Lincoln vs. Cadillac
etc..
4. Do we want to have some friendly awards most runs down the track,
fastest 1/4, best starts.. etc... ( can arrange to have these made cheap).
5. What do we want to do at night... hang around the track until closing, go
to a local establishment, hang out as someones motel/hotel lounge... etc.

Let's keep the discussion in this thread to those kinds of post. If you want to do more trash talking about exotic projects then let's do that in another thread.

Let's keep the discussion in this thread to those kinds of post. If you want to do more trash talking about exotic projects then let's do that in another thread.
Hmm I understand.
I will get a group of Caddy owners together. Now they will be tuned and I will have my turd. The turd is about 50% caddy and I keep adding caddy parts all the time.

Yes it's nothing about whether anyone thinks your project is a POS or anything like that. I just want to get this meet booked and everyone on the right page before we start the trash talk.

I feel the trash talk can make the meet fun... so don't think I have anything against yoru project or caddy's...

I'm just waiting for Jason to give me the weekend! From there the meet will be booked and people can start making plans to attend. We need this soon as some of us don't live as close to the track and we need to make arrangements for the weekend.

Posted by: PatrickSimmons

I pm'd Jason but he hasn't responded but I'm sure he will when he's not busy.

Posted by: NorthstarAJ

I just picked up a blower today. I hope to have it on by the date. I am headed to Mad Town next week end to gey it dyno'd before and after.

Posted by: 02LSE96LSC91SE84TC

OK guys I really think April 13th will be a good date. Its a Ford Fun day and I had forgot I was there this year for that. From what I remember there wasn't as many Fords as you would have thought but there was some. I don't have a show or Open House that weekend and could avoid Sunday anyway if I did so I think this is Solid.

What you think guys?

You may be surprized the track has some decent food so if people don't want to cook out we'll still be able to eat. The burgers are actually real good.

Posted by: 02LSE96LSC91SE84TC

Also the track doesn't open till 10:00 so a breakfest/meeting place would work out well. For those who are late risers they can just go straight to the track. Since they close at 5:00 we could move to a dinner place or head out depending on if people want to.

Posted by: 02LSE96LSC91SE84TC

The Brat Stop in Kenosha may be a good place to meet after close. Its right off the highway on hwy 50. Maybe 10 minutes from the track and on the way back to ILL for those coming from that way. Yet not really out of the way for us going back North.

Posted by: NorthstarAJ

Sounds goooood

Posted by: 02LSE96LSC91SE84TC

Does anyone else find it odd the only interested Caddy owner isn't really a Caddy owner? Close enough.

Posted by: papa bear

So far the meet sounds good. The 13th is my lucky number and being a Sunday we should be able to get more peeps there. Now all we should have to worry about is the weather for that day.

Posted by: NorthstarAJ

I will have my group and my helmet.

The group is growing

Ah the Brat Stop... Haven been there since I graduated from Carthage College... Back in 1983... LOL..

Brat Stop would be a good place and not far from the Track...

I'm going to let Jason and Patrick plan the meet.... So Jason and Patrick post the times and things you want us to do. I'll add them to the information thread.

I have put the event on the calender and if you plan on attending please click on the link and sign up.

Sign Up Here if you plan on attending the meet

Brat stop is big too, should have no problem fitting a small group without set plans I would think.

Lets sign up people, this will be alot of fun.

Now to find a place for to meet for beakfast or at least a place to organize for the day before we go to the track.

That I'm kinda clueless on. Guess I'm never down there around breakfest time. There is the usual stuff down there like I think a Perkins or something, have to figure it out.

Posted by: mespock

I found the Iron Skillet Resturaunt (Map Link) in Sturtevant, WI.

The Iron Skillet is about 8 miles and right off I-94 just north of the track... Map Link

So if there are no objections... Lets meet hear by 8:00 AM and we'll head to the track at 9:30 AM

Posted by: mespock

Patrick and Jason... check this over and see if this works... and is what you guys want for the meet... We could just meet at the Brat Stop also for Breakfast? Let me know

Tentative plans are:

Meet for Breakfast: The Brat Stop Link (Hwy 50 and I-94)Map Not sure why they list more places but it's the one maked as A on the map

Race Time: Great Lakes Dragaway 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Map Link

Dinner to Follow: The Brat Stop

Posted by: 02LSE96LSC91SE84TC

I'm thinking the Brat Stop may be better for breakfest. First i didn't even know they did breakfest but now that I see they do, it may be better. First off most people are going to be coming from that way and coming the longer distance, for me to go that little bit out of they way is nothing. Plus again its a big place so it may be better. We might not know exactly how many are coming for breakfest so the extra room may be good. Not sure how big the Iron Skillet is.

What do you think????

Works for me will make it easier to keep things straight... The Brat Stop it is for Breakfast.. I'll make the changes.

Meet is set... April 13th....

I'll open the info thread now for discussion.

Sounds great. Brat Stop is not too far from me and should be very convenient.

Oh the Brat Stop... The stories it could tell.

Hello All, First time posting. Been a member since yesterday. The meet sounds great, I used to do this all the time in the Mustang club I was in.
Will it be possible to do a cruise? That was one of the better times we had during our meets. We commonly had 50-60 Mustangs driving in one long convoy.

I will post pictures as soon as she is out of the shop. She is currently undergoing sugery to repair her leaky valve cover gaskets. Please say a prayer that she comes out ok......Peace.

Can I bring my honda?

I'll be sure to equip the car with a James Bond type of oil slick.

Thanks for the pic sorry I didn't ask to use it. Not sure why but the car is sure shiney that day.

Didn't mention it to him yet. Probably will. Since hes cammed the new power level has his clutch locking him out at higher rpms. Hes got to upgade and think he was leaning towards a tougher trans right away to solve future derability possibilities.

He ran a 12.9 with having to let the rpms drop to 2500rpm before he could shift. Thing probably has a 11 in it.

Mike the other EVO guy left the state I quess.

Me and my brother will probably stop by.I'm gonna have to bring my 96GT.I don't have a cage in my 96GT so as my brother in his 98LSC,I know GLD has crazy tach guys ,so most likely we won't be able to make any passes.I don't want to pay for racing and get kick out after first run.

Never thought of the GLD guys being to picky but I guess what would I know.

I thought 10.99 was when the cage was needed as long as it has a roof? If your running faster by a few tenths you just have to let off at the 1000'. Still have the rest of the slip to show.

I know it was 11.49 and quicker in 07 season I don't know if they change it to10.99 in 08 season.
Me and Mike most likely will hit US41 before the GLD meet ,so I figured I'll let you guys know.I know most of you guys are northern people but if anyone wants to go to US41 in IN early spring [March] let me know then I'll shoot him a pm few days before.

Ahh I think your right. 10.99 may have been several years back or maybe I just thought wrong.

Time to put tha cage in I guess.

I don't like having a cage in my car ,it's PITA to get in and get out.If my car would be 1/4 mile car only I'd put one in no problem but I like to enjoy my car on weekends and take it to the track once a while. Me and my brother really don't want to mess up our interiors by putting a cage in.We can run at US41 with no cage and I think Byron Dragway doesn't care about cages that much either.

I am starting to look forward to this event. Hopefully I won't be teaching classes and will be able to actually go to this event.

Hey 95sc I might be going to Byron this next season a little bit too. Maybe we will have to get together and make a few runs. I will probably not be going to US41 due to the fact that it is so far away from where I live.

I still plan to bring TurboLS to this event but if I can get started on, and get the Explorer H/C/Nitrous taken care of and repulley the Kenne Bell then I will be bringing that to the track to see if I can't snap an axle or two.

Doesn't Byron have a road course? I have a cousin who races open wheel (the pre-Indy Style) circuit. I thought I heard of him talking about Byron...

I wanted to see if he'd let us be his pit crew... He only does 50 to 100 mile races so there is really no need for a pit crew but it would be fun..

I have never been to Byron to race before. Driven past it but never had the chance to stop in so I would not know if it does have a road course or not. I do not believe that it does but I could be mistaken. Hopefully I am.

Sounds like a plan,I always wanted to go to Byron but no luck yet.We definitely should meet up and go to Byron one weekend.Last time we went to GLD Mike had problems with tach guys about his blown 98 LSC,they were asking him all kinds of crazy questions about his car [driveshaft loop, halmet, and etc..] and they barley let him run his car.

Is there one in the area? I don't get to see my cousin too often to find out from him.

I do know that his circuit takes him to MN, IL, and Elkhart Lake in WI..

Still think it would be fun to be his Pit Crew..

Hey I didn't do the first plug job. And then the car was just obviously punishing me for using it for work and driving it 1500 miles in 2 weeks. It normally sees that all summer

People do break but not mostly stock cars. Althought a new Charger broke a axle while I was there in spring and he was pretty much stock, cheap Chrysler crap.

I'm hoping this will be a start of a fun annual event.

Yeah tech can get stupid at times. That is especially the case with sleeper cars. Once they notice something isn't quite normal with the car they get all paranoid and go tech crazy. At that point it is almost better to roll through with a Mustang because at least they kind of expect it to be modded. If I bring the Exploder I will make a run or two and then promptly get booted. If I hit 10's with it (not happening at the meet so no one get their hopes up) then I will stop screwing around and cage it and do a custom 4 link SAS rear. At least I will probably pass tech. That is a good thing about the Kenne Bell supercharger's. They are quiet as heck when idling. You can hear your brother's Vortech whistling a ways away though.

Never been there myself but I have aways heard that 41 is REAL relaxed with tech. That is why CSVT always tries to hold their MSC events there, plus the fact that there is a hookup with that place.

Relaxed tech can be a good or bad thing depending if you are driving before or after the retard that thinks he can sneak in with an oil leak and his A/C blowing cold. Oil puddles, water, and heated slicks under a car pushing 600-700+ does not make for a fun day if you are the driver.

If you really want to enjoy high speed driving and see how your car handles on a real race track, you should try a track event.
1 lap at Road America is over 4 miles. Usually you will have 3 -45 min. sessions per day on the track and most events are a 2 day event. Try that at a Drag Strip
