A little more help than the usual

Ok, guys, it looks like I'm going to be shopping for a new tranny soon for my '93. I've been told to try to get a 2000 or a 2003 Mustang tranny and repin the whatevers. I have no intention of doing this work myself as I have no access to a lift or major tools. I don't even know where to start.

1. Where do I shop for one of these trannies? Is this the best option for me?

2. What kind of shop would be the best to do this kind of custom work, assuming this is a custom job?

3. Would it be more cost effective to simply get a rebuilt or new '93 Mark VIII transmission? Or rebuild my own transmission?

4. What other steps am I leaving out here?

Please don't throw jargon or lingo at me without explanation. I'm not mechanically oriented although I have done a coil conversion myself. I truly am looking for a step by step process so that I don't have to spend 2 grand.

That's what I have, bought the parts, a shift kit and stall. Then had a well-known shop build it and installed it my self.

Give Greg at Baumann a call, the man know his stuff and never had a problem with his company or product!

2000 to 2002 will work.

I'm not so sure that the 2003 transmissions will work; they may not have the speedo gear drive teeth you need.

BTW, if you get a Mustang transmission and you still have the stock 3.08 gears on your car, you'll need a speedometer gear with 19 teeth.

The Mustang transmissions have a different number of drive teeth on their output shafts than the Mark VIII transmissions.

Shop TCCoA and Corral for your tranny; I've seen 99-03 4R's run for as low as $300 for guys who upgraded, or crashed and parted-out.

Any reputable tranny tech should be able to do the install and wiring- just supply the directions from TCCoA.

Average rebuild for Lincoln Mark VIII 4R: $800-$2,500 complete, parts, labor, the works (depending on mechanic).

99+ Mustang GT tranny: $200-$800 with full revised internal and lubrication parts that may be incompatable with older 4R. Install around $300 for labor.

fossten... if you can do a coil conversion you can do a trans swap.

You dont need a lift you just need to get the car up high enough to slide the trans out from under the car.

I think your best option is to pull the trans bring it to a good trans shop have them rebuild it with a j mod.

You dont need any major tools if you find you dont have a tool you need you can rent one or buy with the money you will be saving.

There are many write ups on how to take the trans out do a search on a few forms and you will find all the info you need to do the job.

Just take your time if you run into a problem post it

This is not something that is going to be easy to do in the driveway. I had to do the transmission swap last year. I was lucky, I had access to the Ford dealership and professional help.... scratch that, I helped a professional.

If you need the car back on the road by the end of the weekend, I wouldn't even chance it. There's a lot of little things that can completely get you hung up, especially if you don't have a huge selection of tools and air tools.

It's not impossible, but it's too often over simplified when referred to on the message board. And doing it in the driveway would be incredibly frustrating.

Depends who you are I stand by what I said if he can do a coil conversion he can do the trans.

I agree 100% I just assumed he had back up transportation so he can take his time.

You dont need air tools it can be done with hand tools.

You never know what you can do untill you try.

Whats the worst thing that can happen ?
You find you cant do it and you have to have it towed to a shop ?

did this 2 years ago(2002 gt trans w/60k on it)

2 small floor jacks,2 factory trunk jacks and jack stands,basic hand tools,some cardboard to lay on stone/grass driveway,only me,no help what so ever,just the desire to drive my car again after losing the one way clutch.

spent about 25 hrs across 5 days
