P0305... changing plugs and wires

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: MatthewDavid

You guys were right it was a misfire on the 5th Cylinder... so I figure I might as well change all the plugs and coil wires just since it's so close to needing it anyways... so is anything I need to know about the wires?... what are the options and anything worth getting over the standard oem?.. it seams like autolite platinums are the way to go...

oh yeah... do I have to remove the MAF? to get to the plugs?...

I have a Gen2... 97' Mark Viii LSC

Assuming you have a first gen (93-96), since you said you were changing plugs/wires......then no, you do not have to remove the MAF to get to the plugs. You simply have to remove the intake runner to the factory airbox to get to the wires/plugs on the passenger side of the motor.

Alot of ppl run the Autolite Copper #764's gapped @ .048. I run the Lightning plugs which are two steps colder. I would recommend calling Max @ 5 Star Ford and get the Ford Racing 9MM wires. They are cheaper than the MSD wires from Summit since you are a member of this website, just make sure to tell Max that you are on this site to get the discount.

Hope that helps.

Plug wires? I thought you had a '97? (gen 2) Or do you mean plugs and coils With reference to plugs i believe its copper for performance or platinum for longevity. DO NOT over torque the plugs when you do change them!! (10-20 Nm only)

no wires on a Gen2............

pull coil #5 and check it out, i think its the first one on the drivers side.........

i use the copper 764's........

and like 93' said, get a torque wrench, and make sure the engine is COLD.

get 8 spark plugs and 8 boots from ford, not sure of any aftermarket boots, but its better to have spare boots so when you pull the coil and the boots liquefies you have new ones to install

yeah i didnt!! but i was able to modify a used one from a 3.0 dohc taurus to fit for a day till the parts came in

if any c.o.p come out not all attached make sure not to pull the plugs out until you clean out the area out with air... you don't want any crap to get into your motor

ok thanks guys... I'm just happy I know what to do know... kinda drives yah nuts you know when your stuff isnt running the way it should... I'm gonna try and give max a call tomorrow... and my girl works for Mercedes Benz so we get to use their shop... I'm gonna do all new boots and plugs... I see Autolite has three kinds of the 764's or whatever... I see two are platinums and one's a copper... is there any difference between the two platinums?.. worth the extra 3 bucks a piece for them?... I'm goin with plats but just curious
