Check engine light!! Booo!!

Ok... I've made another thread about this but it's changed a little... at first it was idling really rough but we figured out there was a vacuum hose leak... replaced that... it idles fine now... but when we put it in gear it shudders a lot... specially when going up hill... it jerks back and forth... on the way home the check engine light came on... I was just hoping someone on here would have some insight on what could be causing this... thanks again...

You need your oxygen sensors replaced. Exact same thing has happened to me and many others.

do plugs and wires this fixed my car many moons ago i almost sold it 3 years ago thinking the trans was toast and the cost would be equal to what the car was worth pull codes at advance auto for free do a trans flush and fuel filter for piece of mind then see if your rear tires will kick you sideways when you hit second gear

and you come to this conclusion how? you sound like autozone. replacing the O2 sensors is a cure for everything.
very rarely does an o2 sensor cause a drivability concern.


sounds like a misfire. what year are you?


edit. saw your other thread. gen 2 makes it easy. pull the codes if you have a scan tool or go to autozone or wherever else will pull them for you. get the codes for me. not the description they give you but the Pxxxx code itself.

id have them pull the code if its a cly missfire ex. p0301 (cyl 1 miss) go home disconnect the battery and swap the cly 1 coil with cyl 2 coil and the cyl 1plug with the plug in cyl 3, then when the code comes back, see what cyl is missing, then you have a rough idea what the prob is by seeing if you moved the miss

I come to this conclusion because I had this problem. I went to autozone (like you are suggesting) and had the codes pulled, and it was the O2 sensors. I had them replaced and the problem went away. I've had a misfire before but the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DIDN'T COME ON.

Hahahahahaha. I sound like autozone? You must go there a lot.

Oh, one other thing: when I was having this problem I asked for help about it here. And I got nine different opinions about the problem. I guess you weren't around at that time to flame people you disagreed with, eh? Thanks for nothing.

It's just weird cause it idles fine... doesn't have any shake or and ticking or anything... just when you put it in gear... I'm gonna go have it scanned... I'm hoping it's something easy

i say what i say because ive been a ford dealer tech for nearly 7 years now. i get at least 2 ppl a week who say they went to autozone and they said to change the O2 sensors. about 95% of them have p0171 and p0174 stored.

10 year ford tech here, and i agree with vr4, people come into work holding a autozone EGR valve asking us to install it for them and we tell them to return it. vr4 knows what codes im talkin about and we replace a nice simple DPFE sensor and send them on their way

Yeah, well last time I spoke to a Ford dealer tech was five years ago when my airbags failed and I asked him about a coil conversion. He flatly stated that there is no such thing as a coil conversion for a Mark VIII. That's when I decided to join this forum.

So you'll have to excuse me for not immediately getting on my knees in worship just because you opened your mouth.

most dealer techs dont know a damn thing other than what parts tells them and in that case...there is no coil conversion.


p0401 eh? LOL

not a ford tech here,(well maybe i am ,been working on them in my driveway for 17 years)but i learned that one myself,lol.

went to autobone with my wifes 97 taurus light on,code p0401,they sold me a new egr,didnt help,got my own scanner and researched a little,dpfe was the cure as you said.

they are 02s sensor codes that tell the computer if your car is lean or rich there like spark plugs with wires befoe replacing them make sure there are no vacuum leaks dpfe stands for direct pressure feedback for the egr

Chickenviii, MediumD, and vr4 offer great advice and usually know what they are talking about and do not need to be politically correct and here we don't care if you are left or right, conservative or liberal. We just trust good advice, and once in awhile talk a little scolding for being stupid - like going to Autozone for advice .. LOL..

After attempting to find an Autozone that had someone that could say I'm smarter than a 5th grader... well I haven't found one yet ... Autozone workers can barely get oil right (Which I've had them mess that up in one of my attempts). Although I do have to give them credit when it comes to stickers. Autozone is very good with stickers ... they know how to put them in the free bin for the ricers...

Home Depot have been more useful to me than Autozone. The Qwik cap, nuts, bolts and washers, the master cylinder seal... all from the Depot. What does that say about Autozone? Plus, the prices are considerably higher than for the same things at Walmart! Will never go to the Zone again. They didnt even know what a brake booster check valve was and didnt have one.

Going to autozone for advice never cost me $2,000 of unnecessary expenditures like going to a Ford dealer did. I was told I needed a new control arm and new air bags and I trusted them. I asked about the coil conversion and was told that that was a myth. This was before I found this forum.

Granted, Autozone employees aren't certified experts, but they don't pretend to be either, and they don't try to screw you out of every last dime like that Ford dealer did to me.

And Rich, you don't have a lot of room to talk about giving poor advice, Mister "Always change your pads when you turn your rotors." LOL

they are bank 1 and bank 2 lean codes. while they are loosely related to readings from the o2 sensors a failed o2 sensor does not set those codes. 99% of the time they are from an intake leak of some kind. very rarely they are set by a clogged fuel filter or contaminated maf sensor.

Thanks VR4, I am gonna look for a intake leak. I did order o2 sensors anyway (133K miles) never been changed! I also have noticed bad gas milage??? Vacuum leak? How do I check the DPFE?
