Mark LSC rear end confusion!!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: tmrbiker

I've been reading for days now all of the different opinions concerning ratios and repairs in the "IRS" Lincoln Mark VIII and now that I'm totally confused, let me please ask a question!

My 98 LSC obviously had the unit changed by the previous owner based on another post saying LSC's had a 3:27 because it has a 3:07 tag on the outside. It's now making a whining sound when you are pulling and the noise quits when coasting so (by the info I've learned on this site) it's the ring and pinion. It would be much more simple for me to switch the whole unit than repair in the ole' backyard shop so I would like to know what "Pumpkin" will fit under this Mark? If I have to replace the ring and pinion then where is the best place to buy?
I've got the impression several different Ford model products will work but I can't seem to narrow it down to what! It really doesn't matter that much to me the ratio but it seems the general consensus here is the 3:73 is the best choice for all around performance and mileage, if so then that's what I'll put in. Please help me clear up this crazy matter.

PS I'm not going to race just putt around and be cool!!!

Thanks
Tmrbiker

I will sell you my pumpkin, it has less then 2000 miles on it and comes with new 4.10:1 and a brand new posi, bolt right in.

Even some LSC's came with 3.08:1. When the car was new it was probably ordered with it, but most have 3.27:1. Any diff out of an MN12 will fit so will 95-99 cobras. All you have to look for is an IRS (8.8) and make sure it's a 28 spline.

I also have a stock 3.08:1 one for sale.

How much do you want for the 4.10 gears?

Posted by: Markviiiedrea

I'm selling the whole thing ready to bolt in 800.00 I know its kind of high but new gears, posi, bearings, race's, seals every thing is new inside. The diff was out of a 98 LSC with 64000 on it, I have more then 1000 in it to it.

I want 3.73:1 posi diff, little better on gas and my new tranny is geared for 3.73:1.

I have 3.73 gears and a tracloc unit from a mustang.

all true LSCs had 3.27 from the factory. the diff was changed at some point for whatever reason.

I saw two build sheets from two different LSC's that came from the factory wit 3.08"s installed at the factory. That is the way they were ordered, that is the way Lincoln built them, and that is the way the dealer delivered them.

Are we absolutely sure it's a genuine LSC? It's not uncommon for people to misrepresent them incorrectly when they are sold.

thats funny considering 3.27s are part of the LSC package. package usually means you get everything or nothing.

he posted it as a 307, maybe the 2 was dirty?

All LSC's have 3.27 gears unless someone swapped out the rear for some odd reason to 3.07.
