I remember back in hs my science teacher told me there is a lot of something thats expensive in cats... like diamond or something but its so small its not worth anything

wow ,never heard of someone trying to cash in on the platinum in converters,

curious to see what he gets for it.

How much platnum is actually in the cats anyways? If it works out for him how many others will follow suit?

There are currently 211 eBay auctions in the category of "Catalytic Converters" with the word "scrap" in the title.

Apparently people can recover a decent amount of platinum (and/or other metals) from a cat; take a look at these auctions that were ending shortly after I made this post:

I've heard that there has been increasing amounts of people stealing cat's off of cars on the lot because of how much money they can get for the metal.
It must be the platinum..

I don't know if the platinum is pure in the converters, more than likely its mix with other metals....But pure platinum sells for $1,267.00 a troy oz!!

i junk cars out and i can get about 30-60 dollers per cat

Here in Vegas on craigslist a guy always runs an ad saying that he will pay up to $50 bucks per cat. His ad even says, I dont care how you get them, they are located under the car towards the front.

They have platinum, paladium & rhodium in them. Probilly not spelled right but you can figure it out.

I don't see how you can get so much for a used cat when a new one on ebay can be had for $50 bucks???

Maybe its the deposits that are sought after. In other words new cats dont have these materials, but through usage and heat they are created or deposited on the ceramic.

depends on size like cats of larg work vans can go for 110 bucks for recycled cats.

rhodium, platinum and palladium are all precious metals. must be a way to extract them cheaply and re-use them. the value of these metals would make them worth enough to extract(as well as their rarity).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhodium
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palladium
ford lost 1 billion stockpiling palladium when prices were highest. the shop where i work also gets money for used cats.(about $60cdn) a piece. must be cheaper to recycle these alloys than create new.
