Need Help Soon Thermostat "sensor"

will not having a thermostat sensor thing cuase my 2003 ls v8 to go into "etc engine fail safe mode"? this mechanic took it off and i lost it. the car doesnt overheat, it doesnt go past the half on the temp gage but it gives me check engine and etc failsafe mode.
