Hey guys...nice lil' forums you got here.

Ok, so anyways....just bought a used 01 LS...mostly highway miles. So anyways I have a few questions...

1st...the car runs...well ran remarkably great. I was coming home last night...and she beeps at me "Check engine Temp." Look over and my temp gauge is racing to Hot...so I quickly tried to turn on the heat full blast...then the oil light comes on.....then check engine light...then says "Decreasing Engine Power" or something like that....Well I pulled over and everything seemed not too bad. I only had like a half mile to drive home so I did. When I got home. Turned it off, checked everything, looked good. Started it back up and bam....nothing wrong except the check engine light on....wtf?

Misfire on a cylinder or something???? I dont know...

Also...can you re-seal the headlights? I have a little condensation leak on one of 'em and was wondering if I could reseal it instead of getting a new headlight?

Thanks guys
-Jason

The first half sounds like a bad thermostat, easy fix. You should have pulled over immediately and shut the car down, not turn the heat on full blast. I hope you didn't damage anything. Try changing the thermostat then disconnect the battery, wait 30 minutes, then reconnect. See if that does anything.

Will try that. Thanks. Any pricing on a new Thermostat?

I did pull over. I thought it was just overheating. I dont think anyhting was damaged. It was only probably 5 blocks that I drove with it like that....hope anyways

About 10-15 bucks, make sure you get the right one for the V6 or V8. You might want to get the cooling system flushed with the new install.

Thanks. Yup.

Bought the car used and getting a complete tune up, ...plugs, ect. Needs some freon or whatnot for the ac, the regulator for the window cuz its in the door or w/e, some fluid flushes...hopefully thats it for a while...might get some coils off eBay just in case.. since I see on here it happens a lot that they take a dump on ya....thanks again!

I agree, assuming he had some place safe to pull over. Otherwise, turning the A/C off, and putting the heat on full blast is fine and is a proven method of extracting heat from the engine compartment and opening the thermostat fully, hopefully allowing coolant to flow freely through the block.

I've been having some cooling system issues recently, and each time I see the needle creep just past 1/2 (but well before even coming close to an overheat condition) I've turned the heat on full blast, kept on driving, and the temp needle falls back to the normal mark.

mine did the exact same yesterday.

"check engine temp" came on as it barely goes above the 3/4 mark on the temp meter.
next comes "engine power reduced"
i forgot what the third message is but it sucks ass and engine power is definitely reduced as you can only travel like 20mph. and the service engine light came on.

this morning the service engine light was not on. next day off ima have someone change my thermostat hoping this will fix this recurring problem... how much would install be at a local houston shop? anyone know...
