Fast Baggin the Mark VIII

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: PimpMyTint

OK, I have concluded that the factory compressor is toast. So... in the trunk, I am going to install a 5 Gallon Air Tank, an aftermarket compresor rated at 150Psi, with a pressure switch that comes on at 130Psi, and off at 150Psi. I will be using eight 1/4" valves (4 for fills, 4 for dumps). All 3/8" air lines. I will run the wiring to a set of switches that will be located inside the car, where I can control the switches at will, even while driving. I am basically completely bypassing the factory air management system, besides the bags. The only question I have is this:
On the factory bags, what is the fitting on the bags? I see that the solenoids twist out, but I have no idea if there is a standard fitting on the bag itself. Any help? I need to use a 3/8" push fitting for the air line I will be running, and the factory solenoids that twist into the bags now, will be removed. What type of fitting can I use to plumb the new airline to the factory air port on the bags?
Thanks!

(I will post lots of pics when the project is complete!)

I was told once that you need to replace the factory bags to run a fast setup. You might want to anyway depending on the mileage!

Oh and look into running nitrogen rather than a compressor and tank, you might like that better. Its much faster.

Not true, unfortunately the one that has mastered this past away (Kale) I believe he drilled new holes to mount the larger lines in the existing bags.

Posted by: PimpMyTint

I don't want the bags to be "FAST", I would just like to have a 5 gal reserve, and the ability to adjust ride height at will. I have had a "FAST" bagged vehicle before, and believe me, it's not as fun as you'd think. VERY hard to adjust exactly as you'd like. Thats why I'm only using 1/4" valves (restricts air velocity). I love the look of the Mark laid out when parked. This is one of the main reasons I'm doing it like this. I just wish I knew what type and size fitting was on the factory bag.

Didn't he post some step-by-step progress on the other board?

Posted by: PimpMyTint

I don't know the answer to that question. But... I am TRYING to avoid pulling all the bags. Drilling & Tapping NEW holes for new airline would be unnecessary if I can figure out what type & size fitting is on the factory bag. The factory fitting is fine, even if it is constrictive. Like I said, "Fast" is not what I meant, I just said that so everyone would understand the concept. I'd much rather prefer at least a 1 second top to bottom "drop", and about a 1 full second "raise". Much "classier", not so ghetto, ya know? lol

Maybe I can get this info from the dealership. I guess it's worth a shot. No doubt I'll be on the phone for an hour...haha.

Posted by: Iwantmymarkback

I see this a lot in my hobby of hot-rodding. A lot of old Fords and Mercs are bagged, and there is someone I know who is using LSC bags and the air-ride technology to bag his car, let me talk to him about it and I'll get back to you.

Posted by: PimpMyTint

EXCELLENT!!! I would REALLY appreciate that! Feel free to give me a call! My number & all the "other" ways to get a hold of me are in my sig at the top.

Posted by: Jibit

its not a fitting, its a orange coupling thing that you just press the air line into and it locks. You could probably find what I'm talking about on the suspension parts places, they have the peice on the solenoid that locks to the bag and the same "fitting" is on the dryer. You can by them cheap if you want to see how big they are.

Posted by: PimpMyTint

Thats exactly what I need to know... The fitting that the solenoid twists into. Is there a fitting I can buy to twist into that, or is THAT fitting screwed into the bag itself, or PART of the bag. If the fitting ON the bag comes off, chances are there's probably a NPT threaded hole on the bag. If not, the fitting the solenoid twists into may be molded as part of the bag assembly. Any help?
Thanks!

google "dakota digital" .. you can preset any height you want so you always know exactly where you sit.. And you can have multiple presets.

These are stock bags! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7TbLh4JsOk

Posted by: PimpMyTint

Nice. A little fast for my taste anymore. I had a Chevy S-10 on REAL fast bags, 250Psi w 3/4" valves & airlines. TOO fast. Damn thing dropped like a BRICK, & hopped like it was on hydraulics. That Mark VIII is sweet tho, just a bit slower, & thats just where I want to be... I will have 8 valves though(2 valves per wheel), and INDEPENDENT control of EACH wheel. This allows front, back... side to side... 3 wheel, and dogleg.
This is the speed I'm looking to achieve...

Posted by: chickenviii

the fitting for the solonoid (at least for the gen2's) is molded into the bag assy, if i had battery's for my camera i could take pics of some bags and a spair solonoid i have at work

Posted by: PimpMyTint

I may just take the valve parts out of the solenoid (inner parts) and use the solenoid as the coupling for the airlines. That would work... The solenoid has a push fitting on it from the factory. I can run all my air lines to them. Gets the job done...

Posted by: PimpMyTint

Update: The fitting on the factory solenoid is NOT 1/4". Of course, it's metric like the rest of the car! (It's 5 mil I believe) So... I either have to run all metric lines, or plumb a new fitting onto the bag, and somehow plug the hole where the factory solenoid is. I have the front strut/bag assemblys out of the car right now, and am stuck here. I'll have to check with my local Parker Fittings store tomorrow and see if they carry metric push fittings. If so, I'm in luck! I'll keep ya up to date!

Posted by: lscmkviii

Good luck! and I wanta see vids when its done!

Posted by: PimpMyTint

For SURE, plenty of pics & a video or 2. OK!

Posted by: PimpMyTint

OK, here's most of the air control parts, pre-assembled and ready for installation! (Tank, Compressor, Valves, Switches)

Turns out the factory solenoid is 5mil, a size NOBODY has except the dealer, and not in lengths, as I need. So... I gotta drill & tap a new hole into the factory bag, & use a push fitting. Ooh well, more work, whaddya know!

I'll post more pics as things progress!

Posted by: PimpMyTint

OK, project ALMOST complete. I ended up using 1/2" airline because I had a ton of brand new 1/2" fittings, and I just used them to save $. I drilled and tapped 1/4 - 18NPT threads into the front bags (actually ON the square head part of the air inlet where it elbows) (and the rears are just drilled & tapped into the side of the bag near where the original one is (see pics)) I plumbed the airlines and wiring through the grommet in the bottom of the spare tire hole in the trunk. The wire for the switches runs through the trunk, under the carpet, & up under the drivers seat. I tied all the airlines and wiring up away from all moving and hot parts. I removed the factory height sensors altogether. Those will be sold. The valve packs are mounted near each wheel, the exhaust is pointed towards the ground near each wheel pointing outwards, and when the air dumps it blows dust when you set the car down. It works great. I have a few odds & ends to do before I shoot any videos, I'd like it to be clean & lookin decent first. Couple more days... Here's pics of what it looks like...

Posted by: Battery

Wow good work. Why so many switches? Keep us updated, I'm eager to see the end product.

Posted by: PimpMyTint

Thanks. I have learned through years of playin with cars, that patience and concentration are key. I have learned not to cut corners as well, because you always end up fixing it the right way, later down the road.

There are 10 switches total:
one switch for each wheel independently (up & down), (4 total)
one switch for all wheels (pancake)(all up & all down),
one switch for front side (up & down),
one switch for back side (up & down),
one switch for right side (up & down),
one switch for left side (up & down)
one switch for 3 wheel (does not apply to this vehicle (hydraulics only))

I noticed while I was under the car that my rear sway bar is broken. I may just remove the front and rear sway bars altogether so that the car will sit sideways at a harder angle /... We'll see. It's almost impossible to hit sideways with swaybars, as they transfer torque to both sides of the car so that it does not "sway" on the road.

I just finished tinting the windows as well. 20% on every window in the car, INCLUDING the whole windshield. I put 5% (limo) on the sunroof. Turned out AWESOME! 4.5 hour project itself, but it's MY car, I'd be a liar if I said I didn't take extra care to make it perfect...lol. I removed the whole rear seat, and rear shelf. The 3rd brakelight was removed as well so that I could tint the glass behind it as well. I HATE the way it looks if the brakelight isn't tinted. I'll reinstall the rear shelf & seat tomorrow after the film has had time to dry a little. I'm SURE it'll look great!

Posted by: PimpMyTint

A few more pics...
I'll shoot some video as soon as I can get a friend over here to shoot while I hit the switches. These pics are with the car completely aired out (down)...

I also installed a JL Audio Sub Box with a Directed Amp, in the trunk. I removed the factory amp, and bolted the compass to the metal bottom of the rear shelf (with a little padding inbetween them). I removed the black plastic shelf holding the compass & amp as well. I had to to make room for the box...

Why have it that dark - cause he can!!! heheh and the MI law pretty much is ok with everything, and if not, they accept a Dr's justification.

PIMP - Nice job!!! how long did the install take you - can I move into your garage!?!

I'm like you, the slow rise/lower is sweet!!! A few little things I gotta let you know about before you go down the road in your hot Mark! The wheels are going the wrong direction...(sorry) and the trunk adjusters need cranked out a little your lid is sinkin...Im sure you were plannin on straighten these things up before you hit the road to show the world that a Mark VIII is the 5hit!

Wow...nice work, no kidding about moving in either!!! Oh and I want a few hottie pics in the Guys thread too (url in my sig.)

Are you going to be attending the MI MarkVIII meet?!? Sure would like to see all that wiring in action!
http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/sho...9&goto=newpost

Also, how hard is it to get that back felt deckcover off???....I'd give anything to get that brakelight windshield portion clean, (oh it kills me!!!).

SMOOCHES!!!

Howdy MsM8 :-)

Posted by: billcu

Nice setup!

Yes, please bring it to the MI meet!

I'd love to see it too, as would the other 20+ Mark VIII owners that will be there.

Posted by: PimpMyTint

Haha, love this thread. Why tint the whole windshield?? Yes, because I can. It completes the look IMO. I get pulled over regularly for tint, & usually just tell the cop that tint is my biz, & hand him/her a card. I tell em if they ever want their windows tinted to give me a call & I'll give em a great deal if they don't write a ticket. Usually they just run me in LEIN & see I'm clear & let me go. IF they write the ticket, it's usually a "Fix-It-Ticket", where it's a waivable offense, and if you can proove the tint was removed, they throw the ticket out. Well, I just write myself a receipt for having the tint removed, and.....well... you know. Another one bites the dust. I've had prolly 50 tickets in the past 5 years for tint. I get pulled over AT LEAST ONCE a week.

MsM8tress: Sure, you can move into my garage! Hell, you can move in period! Thats not a joke either! Plenty of room here, it's just me & the puppies!
The install took about 12 hours total. TOTAL price for aftermarket air is about $500...give or take, depending on what components you choose to purchase. I have used this site: http://suicidedoors.com/ for years now, and IMO they are THE BEST guys to buy air setups from. Pricing is the best too! You'll need a tank, compressor, a relay, 8 valves, tons of fittings, airline, wire, and a switchbox of some sort. ALL of the things you need are available on that site! Check it out, it's sweet!

I am aware some of the body lines are not straight yet. I have lots of adjusting to do still. I like the wheels in that direction, I actually turned them so that they were backwards, just so it looks different! Do you like them that way?

The back decklid is easy to get off, really. Yank out the rear seat bottom, then take out the 2 bolts holding the rear seat upper piece in, and lift it upwards^^^, it unhooks from the decklid. Then just pop out the plastic christmas tree fastners, and pull! Outie comes the decklid! There is only ONE screw holding in the brakelight. Right in the middle. You can ACTUALLY get to this screw FROM the trunk! It's inbetween the bulbs.

I will try my best to get to the MI Mark VIII meet! I gotta find out where it is, & schedule it in! I'll take a few pics soon & post em in your "Hottie Thread", no problem! Do you got

Where do I put my luggage? I don't! I have plenty of room for groceries, but I don't travel much, & if I did, I would just buy all new stuff wherever I was goin!

I'll try to get everything lookin better soon, & shoot a video. I gotta wheel this baby out, & get some nice wheels!

Posted by: MsM8tress

Hi Pimp,

I tried to get at that back hole a million different ways, I will take another look to see if I can locate the screw.

Yeah figured as much with the wheels lol , smacking it or biting it, just not both on the same side!!!

Looking forward to pics and seein ya at the meet!

*edit* after he tinted my windows we went for ride in each others cars, that "fast" bag setup is so fun, i want one

Posted by: PimpMyTint

Yo! I SHOULDA had You shoot the video while you were here! I haven't had time to get any of my friends over here to shoot it, been too bust tinting! I must agree, most Mark's look like they're 4-Wheelin... to me. I'm just too used to layin low. But, my ride is "rough" around the edges... she needs LOTSA work, body & otherwise. Sure is fin "Hittin Switches" when we're drivin past the ladies tho! Haha!

Thanks again for havin me tint your ride, what a pleasure! Thats a REALLY nice Mark VIII you have!

Posted by: jbird97

yea u shoulda had me tape it, im sure ur garage put out enough light, well im sure u could find someone over the next two days to tape it

thanks for the complement man, i love it already, cant wait till daylight comes tomorrow, thanks again for doin it

just a question from curiosity. the tank has 4 outlets, so why wouldn't you attach all the valves in the trunk out of weathers way? i set up a 53 pontiac on air and had all 8 valves directly off the tank. all wiring and connections are then in 1 place. just seems easier to run 4 seperate lines from 1 place than wiring and manifolding at each corner of the car. less fittings as well.

Posted by: PimpMyTint

I have had fast bagged vehicles in the past. I have had both setups, ones with all the valves right off the tank, and valves near the bags. My theory is this, with the valves close to the bag, even though they are subject to weather (they are designed to be anyways) the tubing acts as extra air volume to store. There is also less volume to fill when I want to fill a bag, essentially more storage, and less waste. This decreases my compressor duty cycle as well. (It has a 100% duty cycle, but why run it 100% if I don't have to?) Cost was not the issue with this setup, I didn't mind using extra fittings.

Here's a new link to a beter quality video...

Pimp- Nice job I wish I had gotten a movie of your car at the meet. As it was the few feet I did shoot were crap. I need an assistant on the next meet. Looking forward to seeing you at the next one.

Posted by: turborich

Your air ride turned out nice! The car looks awesome! Too bad all you guys live back east! I have a compressor & tank on my Mark as well but not for the bags, It's for the air horns!

The Marks look good slamed, I just think the front should go down lower than the rear. Has anyone figured out how to do this?

Posted by: hrmwrm

i meant more along the lines of less plastic pipe fittings = less possible places for leaks. this is my plumbing set up on a 53 pontiac. it's a long term project car where i work. nice ride you got. on your tank, you only had 2 lines. that means you have the 2 bags for each side manifolded from 1 line/side from the tank? i've only done a couple of these and am trying to find the best way. i just found all valves together simplified wiring also.

Posted by: russellhyde

Man you must have money to burn! I put coil springs on my '98 & it runs great! I paid $410 for the whole set from suspension alternatives.com (a side website for Strutmasters) & my father & I installed them in a few hours. First I ordered the front for $270 & then the rear for $140 a couple of weeks later. I couldn't afford the dealer's prices & everyone was out of the struts over the internet.

Posted by: PimpMyTint

I didn't keep close enough tabs on exactly how much I spent, but I'm pretty sure it was close to a grand, after all was said n done. I just got all my gauges, which I didn't have when I did the setup, but I have everything ready for the gauges, all I have to do is run the lines to the valves, n I'm done. I coulda just slapped a new compressor & relay in, but I like doin stuff different...lol. I just installed the Sirius Satellite Radio Sportster 4 in the cockpit, and wired it directly into my aftermarket radio. LOVE IT!!!!!

the dark side... I could never bring myself to do it...even after spending the last two days troublshooting mine...just ordered another part...maybe this will do it...no matter..I will not stop until Tux is risin and lowerin on his own!! Even if my hair did get stuck in the top of the strut (betcha my neighbors were laughin at that!). The price is right though and dang bags are getting harder to find.

did you end up having to take the fronts out?

how exactly are the fittings attached to the front bags?

I haven't spent too long looking at or dealing with mine so i must ask, what prevents air from rushing out of the factory holes? Are the valves inside of the extended area and are forever shut now?

Posted by: PimpMyTint

Yes, I did have to remove the front bags, to drill & tap the new fittings into the top of the assembly. I just left the stock/factory solenoids in their holes, turns out they're closed unless they have power. I unplugged them. Problem solved. My bags came out easy... 3 bolts on top, 1 on bottom. Slide em right out.

The ONLY problem I have had with my setup so far was downtown Detroit, some a$$hole broke in my car, and tried to steal the subwoofers in the trunk.
It's nearly IMPOSSIBLE, since the way I designed it, the WHOLE air management system has to be removed from the trunk FIRST!!!!. They TRIED gettin the air tank & compressor out, but without the TOOLS, there's no way to! Haha, I win again! I got back in my car & drove home CRANKIN the tunes the whole way!!!

Posted by: dnehthend

Wow, that sucks, but seemed to work out well

I'm really considering this now

I want to have the valves coming off of the tank, as in the pic someone posted earlier.

How much power does it take to operate one of the valves? I would be using my own switches, would there be enough power from somewhere behind the stereo somewhere to operate one? or would I need relays? I don't really want to run an extra power line to behind the stereo (where the switches would be).

And finally, where did you get the accessory power for the pressure switch?

On my old car the AssassinVIIIor, I had fast bags as well (like 4 years ago) and what was done to get the front down is to remove the inner bump stop that is in every front bag assembly. I had 2 N2 tanks in the trunk with 2 compressors as well, and ALL copper hardlines, no plastic to deal with. Here are a few pix of what it looked like with the bump stops removed and rollin on the 18's.......

Posted by: PimpMyTint

Hell yea! That fohker is BADASS! OMG! I wanna see more pics of it laid out!
I need to get the bumpstops out too! Any chance I can get an explination as to how to get them out?? I'd love to lay frame!

As far as wiring the switches, they take very little power to activate. Depends on exactly what valves you buy tho... some use more current, some less. (You can get power from the fuse box on the side of the dash on the drivers side.) None really require a relay though, the switches I used can handle the amperage just fine. I ran my accessory power to the pressure switch from somewhere "keyed" so that when the key is off, so are the switches and compressor.

If you click on the link to my cardomain page, you can see a few more pix. The only bad thing is that is all the pix I have of it. I got rid of it soon after the car was finished due to money constraints, and the fact that I was in the hospital and needed to pay off some bills (including paying off what was done on the car).

The way mine was set up, mine was basically set up the same manner as yours (as far as the switches), but when I parked it and hit the alarm key to set the alarm the vents opened up and released the air out of the suspension to slam the car on the ground. Then when I disarmed the car the solenoids opened up and put just enuf air to get the car off of the ground and rolling.....it was a preset height.

Now, the biggest problem is that if you have the factory exhaust on the car you will never lay it all the way down. My car sat up a bit due to the fact that the cat's up front hit the ground before the frame/body of the car did. But after I went with headers it layed out in the front. As for the back the rear body mount sat on the ground, and from what I could see I still had atleast 2 more inches of drop cause we drove the car up on 2X4's and released the air out of the bags and with the car on the 2X4's it still layed frame (as much as possible). You can see in the pix I attached what I mean as far as the front being still a bit higher than the rear, and that the rear body mount sat on the ground.

Nice, thanx for the info. You must have had somethin like the Digital Dakota huh? It's fun all the things you can do with an aftermarket alarm system, eeh? Nice job bro!

Nahhhh...might have been easier, but since I am electronix tech by trade I designed that part myself and built it. I just timed how long it would take to raise the car from the ground to the desired height, and set the timer for that time (+/- a second or two) and went from there....worked out quite well, and cost me a fraction of the money if I would have went Dakota Digital, or any other company for that matter.

As for the removal of the inner front bump stops, you have to open up the airbag and physically remove the bump stop from inside the airbag, then have someone with a crimping machine big enuf to crimp the band back on that you have to remove to get inside the bag itself. Not an easy task if you do not have the necessary tools.

that thing's pretty violent, I'd imagine you could throw a cat a good distance off the trunk

Pretty sweet.....mine was a bit faster. You could hit the switch up (for the whole car) and it would come off of the ground about 4-6 inches. Not that I really wanted to, but if you were not paying attention it would rocket off of the ground.....but that thing is sweet.......yeah, it def needs some bodywork....LOL

yea, I actually bought her from a junkyard for $1.

been trying to piece her back together, the video only had 80psi in tank.

she had a blown compressor and leaky rear bags.

The wheels are all facing the right direction now.

the plans are to fix the dent in the quarter which my bro's girlfriend put there.
and reshoot it rosemist.
I love the color in the sun it photographs pink and purple but in person it looks graphite.
