More power and 27MPG for my LS8

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Over the past month or so I have been working with Torrie to tune my car. What started out making my engine ping and my exhaust smell bad (first tune) ended up being a great upgrade. It took 7 or 8 tunes in all to get the car just the way I wanted it. It has more power (little more), superb trans tuning including removal of 1st gear lockout in SST, and a happy side effect my hand calculated gas mileage went from 24-27MPG. This is my daily commute tnat includes about 55 miles highway driving and 15 miles city. The only other modification I have is a KKM filter and adaptor. I do have ideal conditions for good fuel mileage though-I live in the Florida keys (flat roads, sea level, 55MPH hwy, etc). I would recommend a tune from torrie to anyone. I run 470 miles between fillups now--with the V8. Bitchen.

Are you using SCT Livewire flash tuner?

Posted by: scjmc

XCAL 2 with custom tunes. SCT Live Load.

Torrie = good.

LiveWire = waiting on new LiveLink software and new LiveWire Rom upgrade....

Hi jack warning

Anyone want to buy my XCAL II SCT ?

Posted by: JattGary

I'm looking for XCAL II
How much u want?

Posted by: scjmc

You still need to get it tuned by someone who knows what they are doing.

damn thats awesome, my record for a tnak is 370. That was a trip to IU and back. your over 400!!! bitchen is right

Im getting the same 27mpg on the highway and agree it was near a 3mpg gain. I'm also averaging 21-22 vs. 18-19 before. The SST fix, trans firmness, power and gas mileage...very happy with my Xcal2.

i have an 00' ls v8. 20in rims/tires. im getting somewhere between 14-18mpg. what can i do to help this? its killing me, im getting like 250-280 miles per tank. premium only.

now im not a total stranger to working on cars, but what exactly are these tuners you guys are talking about? they change the air/gas ratio? what do they go for?

thanks.

The tuner/flash module is an XCAL II the tuner is Torrie McPhail http://www.fastpartsnetwork.com/. pwr2killayak, have you adjusted your speedometer for bigger wheels? If not the car will not show the true distance you have traveled, or the correct speed.

do a search on 'sct flasher' - there is many threads on this that will bring you up to speed on it.

Yep. A new one with Torries tune will go for $399.

If you buy a used one Torrie will cut you a 3 tunes (Mild to Wild) for $100.

The XCAL II has a USB port so he can send you tunes across the net and you can put on the tuner yourself.

With the cost difference ($170) is the newer Livewire better investment than Xcal2?

Torrie carries both; the Livewire comes with 3 custom tunes + factory + you can add 3 more tunes.

Posted by: Quik LS

the LiveWire delievers the same tunes, reads/clears dtc and does the pass-through datalogging - exactly the same as the XCal2.

The LiveWire brings the realtime display on the device, can estimate HP/Torque, 0-60 times, ...etc - not a good as a G-Tech but close.

So only purchase the LiveWire if you intend to mount it up in the car and use it interactively - if you are only going to load tunes and read DTCs - save the money and use the XCal

Thanks Quik LS for boiling it down. With the search here and other forms it is good for this accountant to get to the bottom line and use the $170 elsewhere on the LS.

I managed to get 410 mi off my tank over the weekend. Cruise set at 90 with a slight tailwind. 1st half was a little hilly, but then flattened out. I was pretty excited. Especially since it cost me $120 for 2 tanks of gas. lol

02 V8. Just have K&N Cone.

no i have not done this, how do i go about doing this??? i need to know asap please...

i'm not technically savvy, but no idiot...

A testiment to how good I have it here for fuel economy I normally got 400mi per tank with my normal commute. KKM increased this slightly...slightly.

the tunes used by the SCT can correct your speedo for the change in tire size - which will also then correct your mpg reading.

All you do is tell the tuner your tire size and the adjustment is included in the new PCM file.
