How does one correctly use a clay bar?

Posted by: BlntdEyez

I bought the Mother's California gold clay bar paint saving system the other day. It came with a bottle of instant deatailer that you use as a lubricant. You just spray about a 2 square Ft. patch with detailer and use a back and forth motion with overlapping strokes. You should be able to hear and feel the difference when you should move on.

Cool thank you.

What clay bar are you using?

Posted by: Detailed Image

We have a detailed write up of what clay bar is and how to use one in our How To Clay Bar section. Let me know if you have any questions about your technique after reading that.

As for what bar to use, clay bars are pretty generic. I have yet to notice major differences between most brands. Some bars are more dense than others but generally speaking they are pretty similar. I typically look at the size of the bar and associated clay lube to determine the value. The bars we sell at Detailed Image are 200 grams so you can cut it in to four or five pieces, for multiple fresh uses. I really like the Clear Kote Clay Bar Kit, for when I detail. We also have some great clay lubes like the Clear Kote Quick Shine or Poorboy's World Spray and Wipe. These products help the bar slide side to side safely and easily. They wipe very clean and can also be used as quick detailers if desired.

Let me know if you have any other questions about clay bar or any part of detailing. Good Luck!

i used the clay bar on my windows....someone told me to try it. use windex as the lubricant and wipe the excess off with a cloth. it worked really well...got a ton of crud off the windows inside and out.

Maybe I could also use it on my yellow headlights and see how that works?

Posted by: glanga

if your headlights are plastic i dont know how well itd work. idk what mark headlights are, glass or plastic. ive never clayed plastic but if they are glass then go for it. if they are plastic then just use plastic polish like plast-x or something.

I think they are plastic

Clay bar can be used on clear coats, glass, metals, plastic etc. They work great on glass and you'd be surprised at how much contamination gets stuck in your glass's micro pores. If you want an even deeper cleaning try the Glass Scrub. I don't think clay bar will be too effective at removing the yellowing on your headlights, which are typically plastic. You're probably better off going with some sort of cutting polish like ScratchX, etc.
