How many quarts of Mercon 5 do you need for a power steering flush?

Posted by: turborich

the power steering system in a mark VIII calls for mercon fluid. I would double check before using mercon 5 in it.

I swear, AllData is useless at times...

I remember buying a Gallon of PS fluid when I put the motor in. Replaced the Rack and pinion, and put in a new pump, IIRC it took about 2 QTs.

I was actually gonna use the Amsoil universal ATF which meets and exceeds Mercon/Mercon5 specs. In their product lookup guide it's what they recommend for Mark VIII power steering fluid.

My '93 originally called for Type F fluid.

Sometime later, Mercon became the proper fluid.

It's okay to use Mercon V in applications that call for Mercon.

See here.

I wouldn't use Mercon in somethng that calls for Mercon V though.

Might not want to use Mercon V in an old rack, you are asking for leaks. I used Merc. 3 over two mos. ago no probs. and everything quieted down.

Is there anything special you have to do when you fill the power steering up from empty?

Posted by: MediumD

IIRC it's just over 2.25qts. Might've been 2.25 pints, that seems to stick out in my head for some reason, but I think it was 2.25qts.
