Headers?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Has anyone inquired on headers for the LS? I asked a guy that I read about in a Local advertisement Magazine and he said its not possible.

I was also looking around on the internet the other night and found someone that says he has headers on his car but I couldnt get intouch with him at all.

Headers are always possible...

The question is of what improvement you'd gain...

LS headers are double walled; I'm pretty sure they did this so they could get the sound deadening benefits of cast with the weight and flow benefits of tubular. But mixed in with that, by making them double walled they are essentially providing for insulation. That keeps the headers nice and hot which increases scavenging, there by making them more efficient. I'm not convinced it would be an effective cost to return ratio. However, I suppose like everything else; you don't really know until you try.

If it can be done I would definitly get them made to performance spec and then nicely coated for insulation. Now that the baby is old enough for babysitting I can get a new job and I actually have an interview with a heatreating coating machine place. They say no exp is nesissary for the coating job's. They are Bead blasting, Sand Blasting, and Finishing, they are willing to train in these areas but all the Fabbing and Machineing is exp needed. If I get this I will definetly be in buisness, I just more than anything want a louder car thats not a anoying loud low billow. Something that growls!

I am almost certain that pre 03 ls' are only manifolds then after that they are headers

everything we did actually moved the torque curve the wrong way, and once we even lost some torque. It is a very tight space, and would cost quite a bit just for a few more hp....

Posted by: LSVIPDEMON

But, really theres not much Hp to gain without stuff like this beeing made, even so still hp is hard to come by in general. I read about hotroders going nuts over gaining 7-9hp for nothing, Im sure you are aware of that but I will think of what you said Quick.

yep - I am one of those guys that spend waaaay too much money on a few hp....

the reality is we never saw much gain - IIRC - 4.68hp... the shop figured they could make them 'production' ready (verses scabbed together) for about $1000.....

Now if we place and order for 20 in front of him - maybe get them for $800 a pair - then it would be more in the range of exhaust for $/hp....

The challenge is that most of the bolt-ons are fairly easy - this one will be harder for a DIYer since you have to get underneath and have some room to work.

If someone makes them - I'll be in line.

DIY, no way not me I dont even have a storage unit bigger than my closet let alone a garrage with space for such equipment but I will keep asking some hot rod machine shop types and keep it posted. But the Job at Jet Hot didnt fall through seeing we still cant find a trustworthy babysitter, all my friends are way to big pot heads.

Even if it did give only a little bit of HP Quick, just to hear how loud it would be would be nice. I love loud American noise.

Please correct me if im worng but I dont think headers will "Make" a car louder I thought I would mainly change the way the car sounded. Am I right ?

Well since I remeber and what I see, actually they "may" in most cases make a car louder by "makeing" it have a different sound.

If you know what I mean, I mean picture Mustangs for just a example. You get a exhuast system its sounds nice and loud you get headers it makes it sound louder "and" different. At least thats what I witnes in most cars I seen .

I had a 95gt with MAC prochamber, 3inch cat back (very loud)and BBK jet hot coated headers and for my car it mainly changed to sound quite a bit.

Since I do a lot of exhaust, and there is nothing availible for our cars I am in search of someone to make a flange for these motors so I can make a set of headers for my 2002. It aint easy. I contacted Kooks and they told me if I give them my car they can make the headers for about $2200. WOW!!!!!

So hopefully I can get someone to make the flanges and get to work. Unfortunately I would not be able to produce them for sale. Would need to do them one individual cars.

Question. The 2002 down heads have a diff exhaust port design setiup than the 2003 up????

Has anyone done headers for a V6 LS? I would be on that list if available. And do you guys feel that it would make any difference, tq, hp ?

I'm pretty sure lincoln designed the doubled wall headers on the 03-06 to mirror the variable cam. The 00-02 is just a mani and should bennofit from the either breathing headers. As far as the 03-06.... I have no clue what to do there. I've been trying to figure it out, even tried mocking some stuff up on the computer (silly engineers and their computers) and havent got anything to say other than it has to be possible some how. The thought to swap the 03-06 headers onto my 01 has crossed my mind, but I need to do more research.

Headers make it sound louder and a little different, but that's not why you add headers. Exhaust is a chain and if your headers are restrictive, then why have a high flow everything. Want to really see power gains from an exhaust, you need to do the headers and the cats (I remove mine normally) not just a cat back system. The issue with the LS I keep running into, is how much L are you willing to give to get more S. I want max S without losing the L
