My wife owns a 97 town car and the ac used to work of and on,now it stopped working ,except once in a while .I had it at a repair shop once and it worked fine back when the problem was intermitten. The ac compressor has been checked and is fine ,The repair shop said it might be the dash climate control unit .I would hate to start throwing parts at the problem .The part is over 500 dollars newand if I take it back to the repair shop they want 300 just for diagnostics ,any input would be appreciated.

Is it FULL of freon? Does the A/C cut in and out at will.

Check that out. Go to a mechanic's shop and ask them to see if the A/C System if full - the compressor can be OK - but no or not enough freon will make the A/C inoperative.
