coolant level question

In the 96, the coolant is a little below the line in the overflow bottle in the morning, but once driven it goes up a bit. What can be causing this?

Think it kinda has to seek its level after shut off. The level varies as the fluid circulates. Thats why the bottle says COLD LEVEL.

I know the level can and should change but it does it more than my 98. Might be some air in the system? What tool do I need to open the plug on the coolant crossover tube?

The expansion/contraction will vary based on many conditions. T-Stat temp, if they are both factory they are both 190 (I think) and also the coolant type and water ratio used when the coolant was mixed.

Then you also have the Gen I verus Gen II issue, they dont cool the same. Grille design and under bumper scoop design.

As long as its within spec and you are not over heating or seeing temp variations when you rev it a bit then you are fine.

Both my 96 and 98 have Napa 180 degree thermostats but the 96 doesn't have the ECU programmed for the colder thermostat.

If your changin from a stock t-stat to a 180 degree one, do you have to set the ECU for a colder thermostat? if so.. how is this done?

In my 95 the coolant resivoir will be on the line when cold and all the way to the top of the resivoir when hot. It is due to expansion from heat. I would say that this is 100% normal in all cars. It will never stay in one place.

You don't have to set the ECU to the colder thermostat but it works better if you do because you can turn on the electric fan to turn on at the same time the thermostat opens and the engine will run cooler. You need to get a chip or tune to do this.
