Need help with burning oil

I know I havn't posted in a while. Been to poor and work way too much. so my car burns liek a quart of oil every 3 -4 weeks or so. I don't know why and I have no idea how much oil I have in my car I just go by the low oil message. (I can't check oil because my dipstick is too short, its from a 93-96 engine and I have a 98 engine) I know my o/d is shot so I drive with it off all the time and on the hwy I am usually at about 4 grand... so that could be a reason why.

Right now I am using 5w-30 synthetic which is costing alot to throw in and is also a waste if I am burning it. My question is what oil should I use to help slow down the burning process. will a different weight help? would synthetic blend be any different?

im just guessing but since the oil pan is deeper could taht be whats triggering the check oil light??

The first thing I would do is get the proper dipstick from a junk yard. I didn't know that the dipstick was different on some years but it's important to know how much oil is in your engine. If you wait for the low oil message to come on you have been running the engine low on oil for a while.

Also, are you sure that your engine is not leaking oil? It's common for these engines to leak from the oil filter adapter plate gasket or from the oilpan. Any oil spots on the driveway?

ok for starters its been doing this for a few months and I havn't seen any oil spots anywhere so its not leaking.

I've looked around all over and have found no junkyard that has the dipstick, and ford has discontinued it. And I've even asked on here at least once maybe twice if anyoen had an extra 1. but thank you bill for stating the obvious

That still doesn't help me with my problem.

uhhh.........

Gen1, and gen 2 have the exact same oil pan, and the same dipstick. My 95 has 4.10's and I run around 85-90 with translates to 3500+RPM for 75% of the time it's running.

I burn a quart every 3K or so.

no gen 1's and gen 2s don't. I had a 96 engine which blew and put a 97 or 98 engine in.. I believe its a 98... and the dipstick is shorter... I broke the oil dipstick tube from the 98 so I had to use my old 1 from the 96 when I changed the engine and my old dipstick got lost.. I know for a fact that its a differnt size. and my car has 4.10's and without o/d when I am doing 75-80 I am about 4 grand, if not a lil over.

I forgot to add this still doesn't help my problem. Or answer my question.

i dont think any different oil will matter how fast it burns

try throwing a little bit of lucas oil stabalizer in there. My 69 Mark III used to burn alot of oil due to worn rings. I put 32 ounces of lucal stabalizer in there and it reconditioned the rings and it does not burn oil or smoke anymore.

do you see any blue smoke on cold start up?valve seals
how about smoke when you rip on it?piston rings.

maybe a clogged pcv valve,that does it,pull the valve and make sure it rattles when you shake it.

maybe you have a stuck ring,

the stuff is considered a miracle for a lot of engines that have sticking rings and other build up problems.

About sticking rings.. Northstars will burn a lot of oil if they are driven by a grandma who never runs it like it's meant to be run. A lot of people will buy a used N* car and ask why it burns so much oil. The cure for it is to keep the shifter in 1 or 2, then rev it out to almost redline, then let it engine brake, and repeat a few times. Kind of 'exercising' the rings.

Check your intake tube for oil. It might be ingesting it through the intake because of blowby. I've had a few cars that did that in the past.

You could also run a comression test, a wet test, or a cylinder leakdown test to help narrow it down.

I understand this is off topic, but.

my 98's dipstick tube was bolted to the drivers side cam cover in the EXACT same spot, as both of my gen1's. The pans looked exactly the same, and for that matter, rusted out in the exact same places.

I need to get ahold of max and have him cross reference the numbers for both generations, but I am 99.5% that they are the same.

If your not sure how much is in it, are you sure it's not just burning overfill??
My old truck use to run 1 quart low, wouldn't go any lower, but I couldn't keep it at the full mark...

Then I must have 2 freak mark 8 engines. cause the 2 oil dipsticks and tubes I had were different. and they were bolted in different spots.

The dipsticks are slightly different between the years...
