Well I just got a Kenwood KNA-G510 installed today and the satellite antenna was located inside on the dashboard but the audio guy was looking at it and said that i wasnt getting enough satellite signals so he decided to remove it and place it outside right under my passenger windshield wipper... since that I have alot more signal... what do you guys think? where do u guys have yours...have you experienced any problems? do u guys think the antenna will get damaged outside if it rains?

I also got the KCA iP500 for my ipod still learning how to use it...

i think the rear deck or on top of the dashboard makes more sense. not sure if those antennas are weatherproof or not. you may want to check!

Posted by: joshluvsla

yeah i would think on the dashboard but the guy says that ford puts some type of uv coat on the windows and windshield and that doesnt allow for the antenna to get full reception???

My antenna is on the rear deck

My mark has the GPS and XM antennas on the trunk lid, one on each corner.
My PSD has them outside, above the windshield
My chevy 1/2 ton has them in the rear, right above the 3rd brake light.

My GPS and Satellite radio antennas are both in the middle of the dash, as far forward as possible, side by side and I never drop either signal.

They're weatherproof. They are designed to be placed outside the car.

You need to be careful about the rear deck. If you have metallic tinted windows, it will impact reception.

I have a Pioneer AVIC-Z1 in my wife's Aviator. I have both the XM and the GPS antennas under the dash with no metal above them. Both have outstanding performance. I've tested them there and outside the car. No difference in the signal strength or number of satellites it picks up. The secret is to cut a piece of sheet metal that is as large as possible and fasten it to the spot you want to use. Then just let the antenna magnetically stick to that. You won't believe the difference. I have NEVER had a reception problem...nor has anyone else on the forum I belong to had a problem who uses this method. With my wife's Aviator, I can close the door over the head unit and there is absolutely no visable sign of what's in the car. Very stealth. I just don't think it's a wise idea to have exposed antennas advertising what you have installed.

do u guys know if the front windshield is coated with some type of film that repells UV rays?

Posted by: beaups

my 03 definitely has uv treated windows. however i don't see why that would interfere w/your reception.

well Im running gps for my PDA and I put it next to the gauge cluster and I never had a problem yet, Trees nor building or parking garges for that matter stop my signal and I have 35% on the front glass (hole thing) so I dont know if the dash is such a bad idea, I had another unit before on the roof and It was weather proof untill one good summer storm here in FL and it was toast....so I bought a new one and moved it in side...off the dash because it lights up Bright BLUE and I dont need to get stopped.....

post some pics of it....

If it's a metallic tint, the metal in the tint can reduce reception to the antenna.

Posted by: beaups

i don't believe it's metallic as it is sandwiched between the layers of safety glass IIRC. Even if it was it shouldn't interfere enough to not get a signal.

Posted by: 2001LS8Sport

I'm talking aftermarket tinting....not factory. Factory is not metallic. Only the expensive aftermarket stuff is metallic...and it indeed does hurt reception.

Posted by: beaups

he mentioned nothing of aftermarket tint, only the factory uv coating.

Posted by: joshluvsla

yeah its just the factory uv coating although i do have tint on my windows but not my windshield
