Under drive pullies

How many ppl here have under drive pullies on there marks? What pullies do u recommend, etc. Just wondering and it be a cheap ez mod to do, thanxs.

I don't know much about it, but I've heard the gains are minimal and it's not worth it.

Just get the crank balancer/pulley only from ASP and NOT the 3 piece.

This car is too electrical dependent and the 3 piece sets always eat alternators and slow the water pump down so much that you will see a rise in coolant temp.

I have the Steeda underdrive crank pulley, a smaller alternator pulley and the Meziere electric water pump.

The crank pulley helps out down low, the smaller alternator pulley gets the power output of the alternator at idle back to normal and the Meziere electric water pump frees up top end HP.

Don't know about the Marks but, I ran a full set of BBK underdrive pullies on my F150 5.4L and can honestly say they didn't make any difference at all.

Even though they're dealing with a different motor I'll believe their results over someone elses results who happens to be trying to sell you something.

I'm not sure I buy the "but it revs up faster" argument for underdrive pullies either. Which is going to keep your engine from building up RPM faster: accessories, or having to get 3800lbs moving?

Id like to get an electric water pump so I can cool my car down in the staging lanes. Do you think its worth the money?

Defnitely. I runt he Meziere unit and no problems here. There was definitely a bump in horsepower, since the belt in no longer working to overrev the water pump.

You would need to run a cooling fan over-ride as well. I found the cooling fan mod is all the extra cooling I needed. At one time I wanted to integrate the electric pump to the cooling fan over-ride, but I can run back to back at the track in warm weather at 4 to 11 minute intervals and consistently get the engine temps below 180* in time for the next run.

Are the crank pullies piggyback or do they have the actual harmonic balancers on them. I was thinking about getting the March dampener out of Jegs, it the one in the mustang section.

Pulleys work on the 4.6 DOHC, up to 10rwhp but you risk breaking your oil pump gears.

Why do they break the oil pump gears, any idea? I thought that the smaller actual harmonic balancer would be good.

Pure garbage. making other things operate worse to help something else just a TAD bit? Not recommended... save your money for something better.

anyone have experience with this dyno tested at all? the article someone posted said they removed the belt for a run and only saw a 3hp difference... I was going to go for this mod, but since theres chatter of oil pump gear problems or whatever, im going to just keep saving for 4.10's :-)

Crank pulley works just fine, I've been running it for 2 years without issue.

the only thing i really have on my lightning that is "underdrive" is the smog pump eliminator and the crank pulley balancer dealie.

works fine.

The gains would be rather minimal, and you definitely need to be careful of the impact on your alternator and pump. If you do it, I would recommend you consider that you only do the crank pulley, and do it with a harmonic crank damper/balancer that will help to ameliorate the hammer strike of the downforce on the crank. Don't use one of those cheap lightweight alloy pulleys! That is typically much more of a concern with a high hp application that is violent, such as with forced induction, but it still matters in NA applications. The viscous type that have a shearing to absorb the shock, like Fluidampr, might be worth examining. Do some research on the options before spending any money on this. Good luck.

As a start you can read some of the literature on how it works, then expand your research from there if you are still intrigued. I run one of these on my track car, which has twin turbos and about 625 rw torque from a 3.5L V-6 engine. Again, I do not sell or sponsor this product or own any interest in the company.

And the pulley I use is NOT an underdrive sizing.
