Lincoln Aviator Ignition Coils?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: nofinga911

I have been having ignition coils go bad since i first purchased my 04 aviator...does anyone know why this is happening or how i can solve this problem? And most importantly does anyone know of any high performance aviator ignition coils and pack??

Posted by: evillally

Granatelli sells high performance coil-on-plug sets:

Posted by: Dominus

Yeah, and they don't go bad in 5 minutes like the trash Ford puts under our hoods. I use them, and I like them fine.

Posted by: nofinga911

ok thanks guys....but excactly which set is for an 04 aviator?

Its a 4.6 isnt it? 99-01 cobra coils should work.

yes it is a 4.6 ...lol but you said they should work...will they definitly work? i want to purchase them asap but i dont want to be stuck with the wrong ones..

Posted by: torquemonkey

Contact the seller and see what they have to say.

Posted by: 98LSC32V

Yes, they will work for any 4.6 DOHC with COP ignition from a 97 Mark VIII all the way to an 04 Aviator. There is a small trick when installing them you have to reverse the polarity but it tells you how to do it in the instructions.

Posted by: nofinga911

can someone direct me to the link for those specific coils...because the link given doesnt show 99-01 cobra coils...and im looking for really high quality..thanks guys i appreciate it!

No AOL or IM for me.

The 4V coils will interchange. The 2v and 3V will not as they are angled. The 4V's are a "stright" design.

32-valve (4V) Modular V8's are:

97-97 Mark VIII
99-04 Cobra
01-04 Mach I
98-02 Continental
03-04 Marauder
03-06 Aviator

These models will interchage. It's essentially the same ignition setup. 4V is what you need.

You should be able to do it yourself, no problems. It shouldn't void the warranty- and if the dealer gives you any sh!t, tell em' that the coils they put in weren't any help, so you had to take matters into your own more competent hands.

Just follow the instructions, and ask questions here if you get stuck...

Since you'll be running these coils and a custom tune, I'd go with one step colder thank stock. I think Autolite 103 plugs will do. You may also want to install a 180 thermostat. With the colder plugs, coils, and t-stat, you should have yourself a pretty mean machine

think you can help me find a 180 thermostat for my truck? and should i have recieved any coilpacks with the coils?

Posted by: 98LSC32V

The coils are the coilpacks... The kit you ordered will come with everything except the spark plugs. I agree you should get the 1 step colder Autolite 103's. You should be able to find the 180 degree thermostat at Napa Auto... if they don't have one listed for the Aviator get one that's made for a Mach 1 or 01 Cobra. Make sure you take advantage of the 180 t-stat by using your SCT Xcal 2 to make the fan come on at 180 degrees.

Posted by: nofinga911

i need some help...the instructions arent helping me and i dont know how to install the coils....and also when i get the new spark plugs how far should i gap them?

Posted by: 98LSC32V

If you don't feel comfortable take it to a shop to get the GMS kit installed. I gapped my plugs at .058 although that is conservative wtih the GMS kit... you can take it up to .065 if you wanted to although remember this is with no blower. If you ever get a blower you will have to back down the gap to around .040-.045 in my opinion. Good luck...

Posted by: nofinga911

can i get the autolite plugs at any store like auto zone? and do i have to get any specific kind for my vehicle?

Posted by: nofinga911

does anyone know if granatelli makes a 180 thermostat for my truck? i cant get in touch with them!

Posted by: nofinga911

oh yeah, im gonna ask the mechanic at service if he can install my coils...will he know to reverse the polarity?

Yep.

Posted by: 98LSC32V

You can get the Autolites at almost any auto store, the Autolite 103's are made for your car and they are 1 step colder than stock. You have to pick either platinum or copper. Copper is a better conducter but doesn't last as long.

hmm.. so would you recommend platinum or copper? What do you use?

Posted by: nofinga911

how about the iridium??

Posted by: 98LSC32V

I use the Autolite 103 Platinums although I used the coppers in my 95 LSC which was more modded out. The difference isn't really noticible. Iridium I wouldn't use because you arent supposed to gap those plugs...

Posted by: nofinga911

sounds good....anyone know if brakes made for a ford explorer would fit on the lincoln aviator? I cant find a big brake upgrade for my avi....and i really want brembos

Posted by: Dominus

You can gap Iridiums. There is even a guide for it on Denso's site, but you have to gap them without touching the center electrode.

ok everyone, my service manager is gonna get a smack in the face (the one i was cool with doesnt work there anymore) ...i went to pick up my car today and they refused to install my coil packs because it will void the warrenty...they told me the truck is riding fine and the coils do not need to be changed..but all they did was run a diognostics test...didnt even go under the hood because the screws for my engine cover were untouched...but anyway my cars still riding like and misfiring and i attempted to install the packs myself today but i really need some help...i dont know how to reverse the polarity...or how to access my spark plugs...im not sure which ones go where...and all that other stuff...i really want to do it myself just to learn how to do it because i like to do these types of things on my own...so maybe you guys can help me...hope so...thankss oh yea and i cant find the autolight 103's anyywhere so i guess ill order them off the net..

Coil on plug right?

Spark plug is located under the spark plug COP (coil on plug). They don't need to go anywhere near your engine to diagnose it. They should run a key on, engine on test where you load the torque converter (car in drive, emergency brake on, left foot on brake pedal, right foot on gas) and run the RPM's up to 2000 or so. The motor will be under load and they should be able to look at each coil and see how it is firing. I just did that on the '01 Expedition. Was towing like crap. Idled fine. Under load is where it showed up. Replaced Number 2 and 4 COP and number 1 was showing that it wasn't long for the road.

Just be extra, extra careful when pulling COPs to not touch the injectors. You bang into those babies and you might be buying injectors too. The cylinders in back, 4 and 8 are a little tough to get to but if you get the right swivel and extension, they are doable. Don't know your mods and I don't know if the 103 are required. I plan on putting on some Autolite 764 platinums when I switch out all the plugs.

Posted by: nofinga911

does anyone know if the autolite 103 are the same length as the stock plugs i have in my aviator??

Posted by: Frogman

At the risk of sounding like a jackass, IMHO you would be better off taking your aviator to a mechanic. Coil swaps are SIMPLE, as as new spark plug installs... Neither of which you seem to know much about. And no, I'm not trying to be an ass for saying that. some people are just better off not doing stuff they have no clue how to do, even if they want to learn.

Posted by: nofinga911

ok I installed the granatelli coilpacks....and my car began to drive perfectly....i thought my problem was solved....now its back to driving like ...misfiring...not getting any power unless i fully gun it for a few seconds...everytime this happens...its usually fixed by me replacing an ignition coil...but obviously there is more to it then that....someone pleasse help me it really is driving me crazyyy...my car sounds and drives like its horrible!!

Posted by: 98LSC32V

Do you get a check engine light? Could be a mechanical issue such as bad lash adjuster or valve guide or maybe a valve actually dropped... Have a compression test done and maybe even a leak down test... another thing is... was there oil on the coils or spark plugs, could be leaking spark plug gasket...

I wonder if he ever got his aviator fixed???
