ok, well, we took the lincoln in for an allignment, and the shop said they couldnt do it because it needed the tierod replaced. they could have done it but my dad wants to do it himself because we are falling short on money and all. i wasnt told if it was the inner or outter tierod, but i was wondering if anyone had any diagrams and/or blueprints of the area down there. is it hard to replace on your own? can u do it on jack stands? i will try and figure out which one it is later today. thanks for any help you have.

You can Do IT!!
It was a relatively easy job, yes you can use jack stands. I did mine in the driveway. Should you do the inside tie rod, might as well do the outer.

You will need to put the crescent wrench on the "teeth" of the "Rack". That will hold it steady while you take the inners off. Outers are much easier.

There are a few pages posted that lay out hte work much better.

Just my .02;

To do the right (passenger side) inner tie rod, you will have to take the bellows off both the left and right side of the rack and pinion assembly. When I had done mine, the teeth were on the left side of the assembly as seen in the above photo. That is were I had put the crescent wrench to hold the shaft from spinning as I had disassembled the right inner and outer tie rods. The new inner tie rod came w/ a set of "instructions" that had proper torque values for the work involved.

Having worked on mostly '60's technology the inner tie rod looked odd until I had changed them out.

I spent more time playing w/ the camera and tools than the work itself.

If you have a high mileage car like mine (100K+) it makes good sense to change them all out at once since you are under there opening up both bellows and getting dirty anyhow. There is a good chance that any of the other three may be on the way out soon and should you replace only the inner, it very well may affect the outer tie rod.
