It"s 2 Long

My mechanic said my new trans is to long, about an inch. Its the back case of the trans where the output shaft comes out. Everything I read said there was no problem putting in a 99 trans. So what is the deal? Why is it to long? He said he will put the one out of my old trans in it and it will be fine. Any comments please!

Apparently you purchased a wrong trans. You didn't read it all ... ;(

Not any 99+ trans will work, for example PI crown vics and Town Cars have longer tailshafts. Swapping the extension housing won't work, you have to take the trans apart and swap out the tailshaft.

Yea! Apparently I missed that. I had posted in threads what I was doing and no one said I would have an issue. I wrote that it was out of a 99 Town Car. But, it's my bad. I'm not blaming anyone but myself. The mechanic is a great guy. He's taking it apart and changing out the (what I'm calling it) output shaft. Which is probably the wrong terminology. He's doing it for 100.00. But he said he can take it apart and replace it with my old one and it should be fine. I hope to God he's right. He also said the shaft runs all the way through the trans. Could I just buy the MMC driveshaft and have it cut to the length I need?

It really isn't a big deal. Guys with non-police package crown victorias swap in the longer tailshaft housing all the time with the trans still in the car.

Civilian Crown Victorias get a steel driveshaft with the shorter tailshaft, police models have an aluminum or (depending on the year) an AMMX driveshaft and the longer tailshaft. The aluminum & AMMX shafts are shorter than the steel driveshaft.

Also, the Town car and the long-wheel-base p70 crown victoria have the longer tailshaft housing.

Don't sweat it.

Are you saying this is an easy change out?

I don't see why you could'nt use a custom shaft greg. I had to order a 1 inch shorter MMX shaft for the 94 when I installed the 5 speed. No reason why It would'nt work for this........

Should be. Here's some more detail on swapping tailshafts:

http://www.shizzot.com/shaft.htm

Scroll down to where it says "Long Tailshaft Extension Housing"

On a Crown Vic / Grand Marquis, people swap from the short housing to the long housing, you want to do the reverse of this if you are going to use your stock driveshaft.

Well it isn't.

The driveshafts on the PI CV are the same length if you measure from yoke end to flange. Thus, it's possible to swap out just the extension housings. The output shaft stays the same.

In this case he has to either swap out the output shaft or shorten the driveshaft. First option included complete disassembly of the transmission (make sure to use 98 mark viii output shaft as those are the strongest 7 tooth shafts) or shorten the MMX driveshaft as I don't think you can shorten the stock one.

Thanks everyone for your input. We found a 98 output shaft in his shop and used it, he also added some small upgrades as well. He added orange O-ring which he said were thicker and prevented leakage (I hate leakage). A new overdrive band and an extra clutch band to the reverse gear. He mentioned other things I really don't recall, I just wanted my car back. In 8 years I have never been apart from her for more than 3 days. It was 8 days this time, didn't like it at all. He speaks broken English. But not bad, I will ask him again so I know exactly what he did. Thanks again to everyone how responded to this post, I appreciate it.

Ah, I see. Damn, that sucks.
