Dark PS fluid

My car makes a hissing whiny kinda sound when i turn the wheel. I check the fluid its dark red blood red kinda like Tranny fluid but its a dawl red. Age of fluid idk have no idea. What should i do shouldent fluid be clear? Is there a Power steering flush like u would do to a Tranny or coolant. Apperciate the help.

as far as being red its prob tranny fluid i think u can take the fluid out and replace it allso check to see if the belt i tight

I want to know how the hell tranny fluid got in my PS reservoir,lol. How do I drain it? And ill check the belts tension, thank you.

Some people use ATF as power steering fluid (because some cars actually call for this), which is why you probably have that in there.

Get a power steering flush, and have it filled with the correct fluid, or do it yourself.

Oh yeah this is unrelated to the fluid question. Tommorrow I plan on cutting out my mufflers my cousin just got a real nice new dewalt that will cut my pipes like butter. My gains from this be what better sound what else? Will this effect my gas mileage for the worse or better I think better or will it stay the same? Better throttle response? Does it sound good?

Sound is subjective. Mine sounds good but not great sans mufflers in my opinion. You may notice a very slight increase in power, throttle response, and in fuel economy, but don't expect much from simply removing the mufflers.

Better sound is a matter of opinion.

You might get better fuel economy and throttle response. Dunno if it will be noticable.

Matter of opinion, is there a way to describe the sound is it good explain what u think in your opinion is good im open minded to what all you have to say havent failed me yet,lol.

I read that the Mark VIII used Dextron III for powersteering fluid, which is red.

And the easiest way to flush it is to remove the return line and power in new fluid while turning the wheel. Do this until you've replaced all the fluid.

The last time I bought power steering fluid from a Ford dealership (for a '93 Grand Marquis) it said it little letters that it WAS Trans Fluid. I don't remember whether it was Mercon or Dextron III, but it was in fact trans fluid in a small and very expensive bottle.

So I'd say the reason you have trans fluid in your power steering is because that is what is supposed to be there!

No. Some power steering systems can use transmission fluid, but transmission fluid is not power steering fluid.

Some cars specify never to use automatic transmission fluid in the power steering system.

I think the manual says use type "F".
But if you are using P/S fluid and it turns dark that usually means your lines are deteriorating.

Type F transmission fluid is what the manuals call for in the Mark VIII.

Calabrio is correct on flushing the fluid. It can be a little messy, but removing the return line is the right way to go.

PS fluid also comes in red.
