We Hire Women Because They’re Easier To Control

During my tour of the ECS factory in China I noticed that most of the workers were women. I asked the male plant manager why there are so many women working here compared to men. His answer, and I quote, was “We hire women because they’re easier to control.”

ECS is run military style with strict rules and regulations. In the above photo you can see a male manger reading the rules to a group of new female employees.

The company provides dormitory housing and food for the workers. A grape system is used to reward and punish them. A green grape means the worker is performing to accepted standards, a red grape means they’re not. Get enough green grapes and you get a reward, like being on a line where you can sit down. Get enough red grapes and you’ll find yourself on the street. You can get a red grape for infractions such as talking on the job or coming back to your dorm late. Outside of work, there really isn’t much to do. The plant is huge and the only thing nearby are other manufacturing plants.

ECS workers are paid an average of 1000RMB per month ($100US), or about the price of one ECS motherboard. The ECSM plant has 11,000 workers pumping out 2.5 million motherboards a month. Out of that 2.5 million, 11,000 goes to employee wages. That gives ECS a productivity ratio that no American manufacturer can ever hope to match. I asked the plant manager how many shifts ECSM runs on. He told me two. I then had the following conversion.

Me: “Oh, so that means this plant shuts down part of the time?”
Plant Manager: “No, we run 24 hours a day.”
Me: “But you said you only have two shifts.”
Plant Manager: “That is correct, two 12 hour shifts.”
Me to myslf: “Welcome to China.”

You must REALLY HATE the UNITED STATES of AMERICA. Work ethics such as noted in the lead post make it impossible for AMERICANS to stay employed in competing markets when these other countries are given such a wide berth in working conditions that result in essentially slave labor. Make up your mind. First you state that it's "too bad" some people want to bring "communism" it into our country, then you state it's a "great idea"??

And I beg to differ with your assertion that people on the "far left" in America want working conditions like this in America. If anything, liberals prefer to see better working conditions abroad so that A) the playing field in the world market is leveled, and B) world-wide human rights are improved, not degraded. If ANYONE in America wants to see working conditions reduced to the lowest common denominator it is the conservatives on the far right.

Communism, much like its little brother socialism, look great on paper. But in reality, they both suck. That is the point. No contridiction in what I said.

And the working conditions you see are the historical result of communism, not capitalism.

So says Mr. I-don't-understand-the-concepts-of-globalization-and-trade.

Did you ever take a macroeconomics or int'l biz class? Methinks not. Outsourcing jobs, while painful in the short run for those whose jobs are replaced, actually benefits a country as a whole, provided quality standards can remain equal.

Unions are fast outliving their usefulness. I know this, having worked prev. in a union environment for 8 years. They accomplished a lot in the industrial decades, achieving Federal regulation Acts which protect workers from abuse. However, unions nowadays cause more trouble than they prevent. Just look at Saturn. Remember how good their cars were pre-union? I rest my case.

I actually work in a company that is outsourcing our jobs to India as we speak. However, I'm not immediately jumping on the anti-outsourcing bandwagon because I, unlike you, am intellectually honest. I didn't intend on staying at this employer forever anyway.

I'd like to hear you make the case for continuing to subsidize companies like Ford and GM, which (I can prove this) hurts this country more economically than it would if they were forced to compete fairly with imports.

Until you can do that, Mr. I-hate-all-businesses-who-want-to-make-greedy-obscene-illegal-mean-nasty-profits, you will continue to stand as the all-time most ignorant capitalist-hater present.

Look at the labor policies practiced at the turn of the century in the industrialized nations. We were no better which is why child labor laws and the such were enacted. China is in many ways a very backwards nation, but they are very motivated to catch up. Many changes are in store as the population becomes more affluent.
