Possible exhaust leak?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

My 2001 LSV8 with 88,XXX miles on it runs fine but as of late I've noticed a few noises

The car "chugs" just a tad more than usual when in drive with my foot on the break and there is a slight ticking noise emmitting from both the side and passenger front wheel well area. When in P or N the chugging stops, and the ticking gets much quieter. When I let the idle pull me along the car chugs a bit heavy as well...

I was thinking exhaust leak or something, especially since I just got custom cat-back exhaust put on. But then again I've been running those tunes with the XCal and sort of beating on my car with almost 90k miles so I'm a little worried it might be something more serious.

Any thoughts?

not an expert on this car yet but i hope its not something serious.

Don't know about the ticking, but it may be a wheel bearing. Those are known to give out on the LS.

As for the chugging, an easy fix would be to not drive with your foot on the brake. Seriously, I'm not sure how an exhaust leak would manifest itself into the problems you described though. I'm guessing coils since those are know to give out too.

no engine or other idiot lights? need more info

My 01' V6 does the same thing. I posetd a thread about 3 months ago but couldnt get a good answer. The noise is kinda hard to describe but i think it is the same thing you are describing. I have had a few people say i have an exhust leak. I dont have a custom exhust however. keep me posted if you get it fixed.

No engine lights...no smells...no smoke. I guess exhaust leak cuz my buddy in his 5.0 stang had a slight ticking emmitting from his front wheel well area and it turned out to be an exhaust leak....

And I dont drive with my foot onthe break...lol. What I meant was that if I leave my car in D5 with my foot off the gas the chug sort of pulls me along in revolutions almost sounding as if its avoiding bogging out. The engine has never died on me or overheated. I just had 5/8 engine coils replaced, all new fuel pump, filters, and I've never had any major problems that I know about.

When I ask others (guys I talk to out at the races) about the chugging sound they say its normal for a car with 88xxx miles. But then again those guys usually drive loud fast cars, not lincolns. it just doesn't sound right...

If it is something serious...what are the possibilities based on what is what isn't happening??

If not serious...what could it be?

i'm not expecting "expert" advice...just a few suggestions

have you lost any power? the noise you r describing could be exhaust especially since you had one recently installed. with the car running follow the exhaust w/ your hand (BE CAREFUL!!!) see if you can feel the leak. Good places to start looking are seams. If the sound is in the wheel well/engine bay it could be leaking from the exhaust ports in the head before it enters then manifold.

I feel I may have lost a little power. I'm gonna take it back to the shop I got it done at and have em take a look at it....
