I came across a 2005 Pontiac Gran Prix GT today out on the road. It was pearl white with black tinted windows. He was going the speed limit so I gradually pick up speed to go around him and I hit about 70. Well he keeps my pace and gets beside me. Well a car was in his lane so he nailed it and flys ahead, I didnt bother to go after him, but he slowed down, so again I creep up behind him and stay there until a Semi is infront of him and I nail it and fly around him as he had done to me. I'm doing 80 and this guy rides my ass. Well it's making me mad so I let off the accelerater and he gets in the other lane and signals that he wants to go...well I wait until I hear his engine rev and I floor it. He must have a delay in his throttle response because I got off the line quicker than him and I pulled away from him pretty bad...but I shut off after about 10 seconds. Well he flys by me as I'm slowing down and I guess thinks hes the

or something and gives me the bird.

So yes I had a very interesting morning before school.

heh sounds like a typical drive into work for me here in houston........
just multiply it by 7 or so.

its my opinion that most people dont like to be shown that they can be beat.

Me too! I love a good race! I've raced a lot of cars on the highway...

At the time of most of these races my only mods were ram air intake, high octane gas, minor weight reduction and performance tires. Very pitiful attempts at HP increases. All of the losses came before I had the 40 series flowmaster exhaust so I'd like some rematches, especially against some of those Mark VIII's....

-2004-2005 Dodge Magnum-Hemi; we slowed down to about 40 mph on the hwy and we both stomped on it and I clearly pulled on him after I dropped it into 2nd gear and launched off...I don't know if he was messing around but it happened and I consider it a win...those things are pretty damn heavy!

-2000 Pontiac Firebird V6 w/ exhaust/intake - hwy WON, 1/4 mile - WON

-2000-2003 Nissan Titan w/ slight mods - hwy WON, 1/4 mile - WON

-Several BMWs [hwy/1/4 mile LOST against almost every single one accept the 745i I raced the other night on the highway]

-3-4 Lincoln Mark VIIIs...three late '90s and one older model-maybe late '80s-...WON against one of the '90s Mark VIII's and killed the late '80s one on hwy and 1/4 mile. I LOST against the other two late '90s Mark VIIIs. Honestly the hwy race I had with one of these VIII's was the best race I ever had. From 30 mph on highway all the way to about 135, he ended up in front of me by about 3 feet. The WIN I had against that one Mark VIII may have been due to driver/mechanical error but we raced 4-5 times and I won every one.

-stock Audi 4.2 - I got KILLED on hwy

-stock '00+ Lexus IS300 I think? No decals...WON on hwy

-stock '06 Dodge Charger V6! WON both 1/4 mile and hwy

-stock mid-'90s V8 Thunderbird - WON both hwy and 1/4 mile

-stock? Lexus '00+ IS330 - LOST on hwy

-several slightly modded and stock Tiburons - WON against ALL on hwy & 1/4 mile. Got killed by a supercharged one, runs low 12s!

-stock '95-'97 mustang GT - 1/4 mile WON - hwy ?

-stock 2006 Pontiac G6 SEVERAL times - WON both 1/4 mile & hwy easily

-countless other wins and losses against cars I can't even remember. I know it looks bad, but I try not to go too crazy...lol.

If its labeled stock its only because I assume so and I may be wrong on some of the the model years but I'm pretty sure those are most of the ones I can remember.

Many of the 1/4 mile races were more like 1/6 mile...the outcome may have been different with more room. We all know how the LS pulls after 2500 RPM especially in 2nd and 3rd....

Neon srt-8? I'd love to see one of them lol.

My g/f's parents have like an '02 GP GT that I would love to stomp a mudhole in. Atleast they pretty much admit my LS well kill it. Her mom used to think their previous Cutlass Supreme 4 door would take my old beloved '88 z24, never got a chance to run those but my lil' cavy would definately have taken it haha.

Lately there have been people trying to me to run them in the LS. Not sure why, but oh well I just ignore most of 'em('bout 98%). Good Kill man.

Yeah, a good race is fun. Heck, even a terrible race is fun as long as your expecting it. People giving the bird to a person after a race is just retarded.

I would not rule out the 5.0 Stangs, and other musclecars for some LS's just yet. Even without nitrous the races can be pretty close depending on how stock both cars are.

SRT-4's are another one that as long as they are in stock form, shouldn't pose too much of a problem. Of course it is hard to tell when they are modded or not unless you get a look under the hood.

The GTP's are another one that mod REALLY well. However, if they are in stock-ish form a new gen LS will have a close race with em. It would come down to the driver.

Since you won against the 1st gen 4.6 GT in the 1/4, with the LS tranny gearing you would kill em on the highway.

Hmm, now that I am writing this, I never even took notice if your car was a 1st gen or 2nd gen LS. Oops. Probably a good question to ask

Under the category of "you just never know....", I was getting on the freeway one morning in my Cobra. It was a 2 lane freeway entrance that was very long...and merges into one lane close to the interstate. Now, my 04 Cobra is far from the fastest around, but it does run 11's and is very quick as far as I'm concerned. There are several 10 second Cobra's around here I don't compare with, but still...mine's not too bad. Anyway, as I turn onto the on ramp, there is a white Mustang GT of similar year as mine that turns along side me. I nail the throttle a bit to keep him from getting in front of me and cutting me off. He nails it and I see his front end come up. I put about two cars on him so fast you couldn't believe it. I was about to lift and lob the car into 6th when I notice in the mirror that he's starting to come on pretty good. So, I leave my foot in it and pound 3rd gear. I should have lifted. That damn thing went around me HARD!! I couldn't believe how hard that car ran on top. I don't know if he had a centrifugal or a turbo, but whatever he had, it was more than enough to hand me my ass!!!

Thats the thing with easily moded cars, you never know what to expect. Both your guesses are good, obviously it was a power added that worked in the higher band.

Just that a couple of the examples of winning would be a lot closer with a 1st gen rather than a 2nd gen LS.

I beat an 01 Mustang GT, it was manual because I could tell by the way the car moved. It was a rolling start and I had 3 people in the car. It was a quick dash to 75 and he darted ahead and about 50 we were pulling even and I slowly got ahead just barely. I was stunned, the only thing I had was the intake...

A 01 GT manual should take a 00-02 LS pretty easy. Must of been a retarded driver, nothing against you.

Yea it had to have been someone shifting too soon. Right now I think my car is sitting at about the same power as the GT. 260 with the intake...I am hoping to hit at least 280 before I'm done.

Well... I have an 02 with intake, custom 2 3/4 cat back and magnaflows, Xcal2 and just went from 19 to 18 inch lighter wheels. I was running nos, but I took it off cause I'm just about to become a daddy. Anyways, when I was running the shot, I have to tell you that I earned the respect of many cars mentioned above. A few of them heavily modded as well. I have air flowing up from the lower front bumper, and that helps too, especially on the freeway. I played a lot with mustangs, Z28's, and recently an 05 GTO that the driver didn't know how shift that car the right way so I got close a couple of times when he was shifting, but of course, I just got close enough to read the plate number. But some of them surprised the crap out of me so bad that I just played stupid and acted like I wasn't racing, and either got on the phone pretending, or just got out at the next exit. Once, I passed an older 5.0 (89-92) at around 130 and got in front of him, he started to get close so I pedaled to the metal. When i had cut out just below 144, he went to the right and passed me like if I was at a dead stop and he was blasting by like at 50 or more! Same thing happened with a few SRT-4's in the area. A lot the them are younger drivers and don't know the car well and make mistakes, then I gain strength. The biggest humilliation came from a Subaru WRX. I had the shot, I took it hard, at about 130 some curves started to appear and I was in front so I thought I had him... NO WAY DUDE!!! That car sank into the ground making it look like a straight line and passed me on the right and I had to slow down cause I just felt wrong about it. At that speed the LS won't SST to 4th gear so it was only brakes and if something came up ahead, I would've not been able to slow down. Even though I had 19x10's on the tires, I felt the weight pull me on the curve. I would say that going back to the driver, it makes a difference. But some cars just respond faster to the throttle than the LS. All GM cars respond faster than Fords. Their multi-port really acts different. Those GTP's are a monster at take off, and now they've managed to mod the exhaust and add the JET Chip and piggy back the computer. I know, My Brother owns a 2002 GP GTP and he beat me by a few cars up the around 75-80, they cut off at 117 or 120, but by the time you get there you can say you lost. The LS has the advantage of 32 valves, but since there's not much you can do with it, you're restricted to baby mods. The LS is nice, but that's about it. When it comes down to real performance, we get in trouble. It's easy to take on a v6 accord or some bmw's, maybe throw in a few v8's and older folks in camaros and vettes. But when you get next to an srt8, a lightning, a maraudeer, or just some other Regular/high performance like the LS, it really falls short of power. Not to mention the Jap craps like the rx-8 or supras. Then we go even deeper. I have made the decision to get a real racer, or quit at all. Hell, I got beaten around yesterday but a 3.5 Altima SE-R. Even though I'm not sure about the result cause I'm driving around with oil in my plugs and maybe bad coils, I saw the way that Altima took off. I mean, My car is reallyyyy sluggish for the past two weeks, and is just getting worst, but I'll take care of it this weekend and I will race that guy again. He's my neighbor and he just got the car and wanted to race me so bad even with my bad plugs and coils. But I'm sure take off is undisputed. Maybe at higher speeds, but those little japs are now hitting 140+ easily...

Holy sh1t that was LONG, so I trimmed it down a little bit...

Some LS's aren't as slow as you may think. I am still N/A in my 2005 LS and with a custom tune and custom intake I pulled a 14.4 @ 98MPH in the 1/4 mile. I know that it has 14.3's in it as it sits with me driving it a little better. If I decide to show up to the track with less gas in the tank and take the spare out of the trunk I should be able to whittle off another .10-.15 or so. Bump the timing a little bit and run a little higher octane fuel for race-day; then if I just get lucky with a good launch and zero wheelspin it is possible to nip high 13.9's in the right conditions. Not bad with a N/A new gen LS with $300 in mods.

After i hit 13's while still N/A then I will shoot for high, high 12's on a 100 shot of nitrous.

Yea...any SRT-4, WRX, Cobalt SS, AWD turbo talon, Ion Redline, 5.0 mustang, or '01+ GT 'stang will flat out smoke an 00-02 LS with mods such as exhaust and intake. It might be different with the flasher and nos but as far as I'm concerned those are all facts.

Once I was racing that Pontiac G6 on the highway, we were at about 120 mph when my buddy in his '89 5.0 'stang came flying by us at what seemed like 150+ in what he claimed was 4th gear. It was like we were standing still. No matter what, a 5.0 mustang will beat a 00-02 LS -- w/o nos or sc -- whether its by torque off the line or HP on the highway...bottom line.

Then again, my buddy in his '89 5.0 just installed BBK equal-length headers, ram intake, and full exhaust; we raced on the highway, he was in 3rd gear at about 45 mph...I dropped it down into 2nd, jumped and quickly shifted into 3rd with major momentum...he was trying to play catch up in 3rd gear but he couldn't do it. Once he got into 4th gear it was soon over. It was fun while it lasted and makes me wonder... Could a 00-02 LSV8 with exhaust and intake like mine take a stock '86-'89 5.0 on the highway. hmmmm...i think so...but who really cares I guess..

I had a modded 89 5.0 5-speed back in the high school days. I remember it was around the time when Cadillac came out with the Northstar STS's. I got smoked by one on the highway. He also had 4 people in his car as they all laughed pulling away from me. The fastest I could get that car was 145mph.

A Altima SE-R is very fast, it will dog our LS's pretty badly. Its a 350Z motor stuffed into a small 4 door sedan with a 6 speed. Youre comparing apples and oranges here. The LS isnt a speed demon but sure as hell looks the best out of all the 4 door sedans out there for the price you can picked up the used ones for. Hell, I paid $18K for an 04 V8 with 3800 miles! What else can you get out there for that price and still drive your kids to school in? Everywhere I go I get comments on my car and people asking me what kind of car that is. Doubt you'll get that response in any Altima.

The GTP should not be discounted so quickly. Yes, in stock form they will not do so well in a highway race (infact until they have been modified, they fall on their face up top). but going from a dig or stop light to stop light, they will give you a run for your money, I am sure we all know how s/c gives tons of low end tq.

my 99 gtp went 14.8 stock
my 97 gtp went 14.3 stock

I know I only have a v6 LS, but it seems pretty slow to me.

also, I have seen the srt4 in stock form run high13s and modified easily dip into the 12s.

You shouldnt have much of a problem with a stock grand prix gt but their is a turbo kit on the market that puts them in the 12s pretty easy.

I don't know if this was for me or not but I totally am not dismissing the GTP's! Those can be some VERY fast cars with minimal mods. The guy above was talking in more or less stock form. Even in mildly modded form a GTP against a mildly modded new gen V8 LS will be a drivers race. However, the GTP can go leaps and bounds beyond that due to its much bigger aftermarket. About the only thing I can do with the LS beyond this is run nitrous or fab my own turbo kit, or have special cams ground (EXPENSIVE!!!) and P&P the heads.

I have heard of SRT-4's running high 13's in stock form, but I don't buy it and have never seen it. I am not discounting you or anything, I just think that too many SRT-4 owners try to BS others about their cars "stock form". ALL the claimed stock SRT-4's I seen run have put down mid-high 14's in the 1/4 mile.

I am very surprised at how small the aftermarket is for the LS. It looks like the only way to throw any power into these is with Nitrous (not a fan) or a custom forced induction set up (way too much $$). Personally I am not into the bling so it looks like I may just be a spectator here for a while.

I have seen a couple srt4 up at New England Dragway a couple times running in the 13.9-14.1 range and according to the driver they were stock. I guess I wouldnt know though because I would have to take their word for it.

I know that the race that I have been the most irritated about (on the street) was a vette that pulled out of a gas station to a red light right next to me (I was in my 99). The guy was reving his motor and creeping forward at the light... and I was egging him on with a couple revs myself (because I wanted this race. I believe it was an 05 vette. When the light went green, I walked it out of the hole tring not to spin. He seemed to break lose a little and then grab. I got to WOT before hitting second gear, about half way through second i looked for the vette... it was way back. I believe he knew he was being smoked and let off as though he wasn't going for it. Even after I slowed back down he stayed behind me. I have yet to have a vette kill and I was looking forward to this one.

sucks that the GP owner in the first post was a dicknose. I have noticed as they become cheaper and cheaper to purchase used... the idiot factor has gone way up.

remember my LS400 would outrun almost anything on the road. It had a 0-60 of 5.9 seconds (With my intake) and Stock was running about 6.2 according to Motor Trend. I was outrunning mustangs all the time in that thing, talk about a sleeper. I never took it to a track, but it sure as hell would pull a GTP anyday. I was outrun by an SRT-4 to 100 but as I got a little faster I started to catch up (In the lexus) but I still lost. If you want some power and the ride of a Luxury car within the $15,000-22,000 range...1998-2000 Lexus LS400 is the only way to go.
