Stronger Moderation

Hey Joey, I have a comment about the extent to which posts are moderated. Often times a small disagreement will escalate in a post. This is just my personal opinion, but I think that taking a stronger "enforcement" role for playing nice might be of some help. I know that it almost always fizzles out, but I also feel that it might make this board look bad from time to time.

Again, this is all just my opinion/feeling on the situation, and any and all feedback is welcome. Please don't think I am repremanding you or calling you out, I am just giving a suggestion from my view point. You know that I think you do a great job here, otherwise I wouldn't hang around as much!

My opinion is that we are adults here and can handle each situation as it arises. I personally feel that the majority of boards, especially car boards, are way over moderated. It is the moderators that usually make things worse by stepping in versus letting a minor dispute simply flame out, which it usually does.

As far as I know, there have only been one or two post deletions for flaming since this board was started. That to me tells me we have a good group of people here and most are responsible in their postings and know when to say when.

People need to lighten up and not take things so seriously.

Just today I got out of my car and an African American guy walked up to me and said, "it's your lucky day". I expected to get shot or robbed or something, it was wierd, but I turned directly toward him and asked: Ya, why is that? He said, you woke up this morning, didn't you. And I said, "True so true, everyday we wake up is another lucky day for all of us". We each then went our separate ways.

Life is too short to spend it worrying about the little stuff.

I whole-heartedly agree. I suppose that I did not make that point incredibly clear, and I appologize. I do not feel that moderators should baby sit, or step in and scorn anyone for their comments. However, much like grade school, when a moderator just stops by to say "Hey, let's keep it focused on positive response to the initial post" it tends to have a much strong effect than when another member says so. I cannot count the number of times I've gotten caught up in someone elses flame war because I was actually trying to help the thread starter and had things turned on me. Again, I am not saying that every member should not try and keep a thread on topic, just the weight of the authority it might have.

Well that would be nice. If everyone realized that the comments you read are black and white, lacking body language, intonation, and many other contributing factors to communication, we would have a lot less trouble. And if members would take a moment to read over their post and try to take a different view of it, we would really be sitting pretty. But that's just too easy.

Many of you don't really know why LVC got started. Monstermark, Onebandmk8, 1wykdmk8 and myself were all part of a board that was constantly fighting and in the midst of civil war over an admin who would suspend members and delete posts on a whim. The board eventaully split in two. And then, the new board also became quite totalatarian in nature. I got fed up and wanted something better, and built LVC. A few great people came along for the ride.

One of the values we decided upon early on was that we were not going to have a bunch of rules, and treat people like little kids, spanking them for every minor transgression and not letting them play with their friends.

There have been only a few posts deleted in the last 6 month, and I agonized over doing it. There are 2 banned members, one is a leader from one of our old boards I mentioned, the other was a guy who in 5 mins on the board jsut started bashing people for no reason and wouldnt listen when I asked him to be adult.

Dont get me wrong, If I have to, I am quite capable of being a hard guy, I just hate doing it. I generally try to trust in people here to behave like adults. I watch the posts, and I see minor bickering now n then. Sometimes I step in and make a post like -- let's keep it civil guys--but I try hard to let people work it out for themselves and just provide a little guidance once in awhile.

You should know - that when you see this

on the bottom left in a post - thats the Alert button. If you click it it will alert me to the post and give you a box to explain what you see the problem is. This helps cause I cant be everywhere at once.

Yea, that is all I am suggesting. I agree that deleting and banning is not the answer 99% of the time. Simply that a brief "let's keep it civil guys" from a Mod might carry some more weight and aid in putting an early end to bickering. Maybe I am just being facetious and it will make no difference if a member or a moderator say such, but it's an idea.

That is a good point. Perhaps it should be utilized more. I think a lot of us tend to overlook it as we a) don't want to overstep our bounds and b) don't want to come across as a tattle-tale. But it is a good feature, and one I think we should all be a little less hesitant to use.

THe other thing Josh -- this is everyone's board. You guys are the ones who make the board what it is. Thats alot of why I try to let everyone work things out for themselves. Ive seen a few instances of bickering going on, and generally they resolve themselves.

That alert button is a good idea. I never knew it was there. See what happens when you read. Duh!
I too, was a part of a forum that basically self-destructed thanks to an over-zealous moderator and then an Admin. that not only didn't stop it but actually made it worse by promoting the guy to an Assistant Admin. position! Even though they are still in existence, the place is nowhere near what it was and certainly nowhere near what it "could" have become.
Joey seems to have a great vision for his forum and I'm glad he invited me to check it out.
