Bush and Kerry Neck and Neck Says Harris Poll

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The presidential election is still very close. Neither President George W. Bush nor Senator John Kerry is campaigning hard, but neither has found a way to pull ahead. In the latest Harris Poll, the two candidates are tied 47 to 47 percent among likely voters. The only Harris Poll to find either candidate to have a clear lead was in June, when a poll taken shortly after President Ronald Reagan's death reported a ten-point Bush lead. We believed (and reported) this to be a blip caused by the good feeling surrounding the memories of the popular Republican president and President Bush's success in associating himself with the public's good feelings about him.

Another indicator of how close the presidential race is now (which does not necessarily mean it will be close in November) is that President Bush's latest job ratings (48% positive, 51% negative) are worse than the equivalent ratings of recent presidents who were re-elected for a second term (Clinton, Reagan, Nixon) but better than those of his father President George H.W. Bush and President Carter, who both failed to win re-election, at this time in their campaigns for re-election.

However, in August 1976, President Gerald Ford's ratings (48% positive, 45% negative) were slightly better than President Bush's current ratings, and he went on to lose a very close election to Jimmy Carter that November.

HEINZ ASSETS USED TO BOOST CAMPAIGN

In December '03, Kerry announced that he loaned his campaign $6.4 Million by mortgaging a share of a Boston home he jointly owns with his wife.

Teresa Heinz Kerry paid cash for the Beacon Hill mansion in January 1995.

But according To Kerry's own 1994 senate personal financial disclosure [signed May, 15, 1995], Kerry's own personal net worth was somewhere between a negative $130,000 to positive $34,995.

The current loan on the house carries an annual interest payment of $200,000, records show, more than Kerry's $158,000 Senate salary.

Kerry's campaign insists he intends to pay off the 30-year mortgage himself.

"Sen. Kerry is a man who has considerable assets," spokesman Michael Meehan explains.

But Kerry's own financial disclosures show no assets sufficient to pay the loan -- or even a way to keep up with the interest payments!

KERRY: CLEAR THE AIR

Besides a blurring of Heinz-Kerry assets, the campaign is also wresting with past quotes made by Kerry himself.

In his 1990 Senate race, Kerry asked his challenger to "clear the air" by releasing tax returns.

"I think people want to know whether someone they possibly might send to Washington to represent them in the Senate is someone who pays their fair share of taxes,'" Kerry said. "Why is James Rappaport hiding his tax returns?" Kerry asked. "Why is it some people can live up to that standard and he can't? It seems to me that he ought to be able to release those returns and clear the air...

"Why doesn't he just release them? What is he hiding?"

And at the height of last year's primary race, Kerry vowed that "openness" would be the "hallmark" of his administration.

"As president, openness will be the hallmark of my administration, not some talking point... The highest office in the land requires the highest level of openness for the American people."

Ok - now lets take a quick look here. This alleges that Kerry doesnt have the money to pay for the mortgage....... But they are using information from 10 years ago as their source for this assumption.

Ya think maybe Kerry has come up with a few more sources of income since 10 years ago maybe?

Please...... Talk about right wing nut jobs........ Its the perfect display of twisting the facts around to suit their purpose while distorting the truth.

Senator Kerry, just release your tax returns and sign the Form 180 so we can look at ALL your military records and let the chips fall were they may. Then all of this can go away.
