replacing headlights

How much work and money would be involved in replacing high-voltage lamps (and the neccesary wiring, whatever) to a regular system?

I assume you mean change from HID to halogen.

AFAIK the 98 model came with HIDs standard. I don't believe halogens were made available for that model year.

I don't think 9007 bulbs will fit (or shine safely) in your 98 headlight housings.

You could use headlight housings from a 93-96 Mark VIII, but in order for them to fit, you'd need to exchange the whole front portion of the car with that of an earlier model [driver and passenger side fenders, bumper cover, grill, and (I think) hood]. Each of those parts will probably cost at least $200, unless you buy a wrecked Mark VIII from which to scavenge parts.

I've never heard of anyone wanting halogens instead of HIDs before. There are many gen 1 owners who would go to great lenghts to have HIDs on their cars.

Why do you want to switch?

I guess I'm just freaked out about the cost of replacing bulbs and ballast, and what's the box ($600) that could also go bad? I've never had a system like this, so I'm just checking my options. Thanks for your interest.

I think you'll be fine. the HID system is pretty tough, and that includes the light bulbs.

The ballast should last you a long time, especially if you don't "flash" your low beams byt turning them on and off real quick.

Options are always a good thing. So is a little research. This may help get an idea of the value of plug and play vs. custom install.
