on my 95 some of the chrome on the door molding is pitting. I was thinking about taping it off and painting it with a black hammered finish paint. any other sugestions?

I've got a similar problem. Three questions:
1. Can these be pulled out of the painted door moldings without damaging the paint?
2. Can you buy this chrome molding for the doors and bumpers in rolls or separately from the dealership?
3. How hard are these to pull and replace without damaging the surrounding paint?

I have same problem would luv to know solution myself, im thinking of pealing the rest off then taping around the molding and spray paint it or something in black or silver idk anything better then half chrome half bare metal,lol.
Well I decided to paint the chrome molding with a hammered finish paint. It's made by Rustolium and it's called hammered finish. I did it in black. I used the hammered finish paint so that the pitting wouldn't be noticable. Some people like it, some say I ruined the car. I say that it's better than messed up looking chrome. I think it looks sportier too. You guys be the judge.

My question is, has anyone ever tried to pull and replace the chrome inserts themselves? Anyone? Anyone?

Black looks like it was there all along. Much better than the pitted I am sure.
I pulled some similar trim on my wife's 92 Grand Marque. The stuff had a clear coat that just yellowed and bubbled and looked nasty. I sanded down and used an exterior grade chrome (Mylar ??) tape (found at local auto parts store in strips 3" or 4" wide) and cut to fit. Looked good for 3-4 years. Not quite as shiny as the original stuff but was very close.
I had to use a heat gun to go around the bumper to get wrinkles out. Cost was cheap under $30.

I just got a private message referring me to this excellent instructional thread in markviii.org :
3M sells a vinyl tape that goes over the top and actually looks very good when applied/trimmed correctly. Infact, I beleive they make it in numerous colors, maybe even a chrome. I am blacking out the trim on the Caddy this week sometime cuz the chrome is crappy, and using the blackout tape. I have used it before and know the results are good, as is durability. I have even ran it through the high pressure self-serve car washes. New trim is an option, but I wanted to black it out anyway. 3M always the way to go with the tape/pinstriping when possible. But what Turborich did looks fine in the pictures to me.

They make this size in woodgrain.....would look killer with that faux 'vert top on my Huggie Bear special..... but I'd have to trim it for width....
