Upgrading to Navigation Radio

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hello everyone out there!!! got a question: I wanna add the Navigation radio to my 04' Navi that didn't come with it. Really descided to after seing the 07' Navigator and thinking the grill is ugly and the body basically looks the same. Will
the radio be a direct connection???

Posted by: PRSaint

I just got the original radio with navigation system on ebay, I am trying to also find out if its a direct hook up and if anything else is needed. Well I will keep checking here to see, I am planning on getting the owners manual to see what I can find out.

What components didi it come with?

from what I have been told, you need the gps antenna so the system knows where you are at, and the rearview mirror that has the microphone in it for the voice recognition. There is a guy that succesfully did it to an aviator, search the blogs to find out exactly what he did.

I also wanted to do this to my 05 navi.

I bought the navigation system on ebay, the exact one for an 05 navi.

Pulled my navi apart and its a no go.

I'll need a complete new harness etc.

Ford told me it's $900 and a full days labour....

I was just thinking about this exact same thing for my Mark. I saw a navigation from an 04 Town Car that looked very sweet. So I called Max at Five Star Ford and gave him the part number for the unit. What he told me is each vehicle as it is built from the factory has the harness built in to the original main wiring harness. So when the accessories are added they are just plugged in.This is the uint I was planning on using.

As you can see by these pictures, there are a lot of connections. According to max you would have to go to a junk yard and cut the wiring harness from a vehicle that had a navigation. Ford would end up charging you over $900 for a factory wiring harness. With enough money, anything can be done, but in this case it would be cheaper to go with an aftermarket like Pioneer or Eclipse.

How much would installation be (provided you bought the harness from Ford)?

Posted by: GMAN

I would think that would be a dealer only thing. The cost would be through the roof.

Something a little more specific than "through the roof?" :[

I was told a full days work.

So I'm assuming 8 hours at $75/hour

Keep in mind, Ford will charge you more than $900 just for the wiring harness. This is before any labor has been performed.

That's not too bad. I might even be able to get it for cheaper than that at my dealership.

I searched every way I could think of...nada....zip.

I looked into this with my Aviator. Not bragging here...but I know what I'm doing. There just wasn't any decent way to make this swap. It's a lot of work...which is ok with me...but there is a ton of expense involved too. The wiring harnesses, components, etc etc. Not only that, there is a very small chance that your existing stereo drives the speakers in the same way as the NAV unit does. Mine would have required additional wiring harnesses and amp because of the way the speakers are driven. (I have the CD-6) Seriously, it's not economically feasible. I honestly could have traded my Aviator on one with NAV for about the same price as I could have installed it.

Take a look at the Pioneer AVIC-Z1. Nice unit....and the "in motion" lock outs can be bypassed so you can use it the way it should be.

mike and i have a pioneer aavic-d2 in the 95 it is a very good unit and easy to installl and use. we used it on the way to carlisle. i woiuld reccomend it over trying to install a new harness. been there done it, jd
