Gen II Fuel Pump upgrade

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So,
I was thinking that I was doing pretty good to upgrade the fuel pump. I read plenty of threads and looked at many pictures and had organized accordingly. I see that I didn't do enough research into what I was getting into. Oops. So much for getting this done in one day.

what are you stuck on?
i did mine w/o having any prior knowledge of what i was getting into, took me about 2 hours..

here is my write-up of what i did...

I bought the wrong Walbro 255 pump and being the weekend, the work isn't going to get done. I posted this in response to the lack of GenII Tech. pages. I saw some good photos and info posted about GenI pumps and "how to". I'm doing my part for the next guy who may rely on the site to post info and experiences.

Parts are form Rock Auto;

MOTORCRAFT Part # PFB75
{#F8PZ9A407JB}$274.79 (entire assembly, see Pic. below)

BOSCH Part # 0580453436
{FUEL PUMP #580453436} $121.79 (fuel pump alone)
**Non-stock item--shipping delayed up to 7 business days**

At this point, I need to find the right Walbro part number that will fit a GenII.

yeah, if you didnt get the Cobra 255, as you know it wont work. i basically did the same thing.. i ordered a 255hp pump for a 98 cobra, and my parts guy sent me a 5.0 cobra pump.. and of course it was the weekened before i noticed it..
seems we had the same problem..

is that a new fuel bucket for a cobra?

Posted by: torquemonkey

I cross-checked the parts from Rock Auto looking at the pictures of fuel pump assemblies. The Mark VIII and Cobra of the same year has different set ups. The Cobra high pressure looks like it might work with the filter being small enough to fit in the "bucket". Did you put a 255 in a Gen II?

I got a Walbro 255LPH HP in my Gen II. Same one the goes on the Cobra. Had to modify the pump bucket, as that pump is a bit taller than the OEM pump.

You will also have to fold the filter a bit to get it to fit, but I haven't had any flow issues, and I suspect neither will you.

I will see if I can get you the part number when I get home tonight/tomorrow am if you wish.

Simple Solution Get a Gen I LOL... Then you'll have more tech articles. Sorry friend had to do it. LOL...

I guess you are going to have to compose all the Gen II tech articles.

You always seem to be able to find the right information somewhere. King of the Web search.

My brother helped me modify a Gen 1 to fit in my Gen 2 tank. It was a while ago so I'm sorry I can't give you details on exactly what he did. If nothing else at least you know it can be done.

What years?

Posted by: m_maker

Any year SVT pump or any year Aviator pump. Remove the pump motor from the focus or aviator pump bucket and direct swap it over to the 2nd gen bucket.

SVT pump = $90 or so.
AVIATOR pump = $145 or so.

Thanks for the heads up. With a little imagination anything is possible.
However, with the filter to large to fit in the bucket and fuel is sucked in directly from the very bottom and would give me reoccuring nightmares of possible blockage issues.
I'm sure it would be fine but, if it weren't a daily driver, I would give it a go. Given that there is a better part out there, I am going to do my best to get it. As the old adage goes " If its worth doing, its worth doing right."
Too bad you don't have any pictures of the work, it would be worth while to document.
