Pretty intense - and that sunroof was an incredibly rare option on an early Mark.

btw - one error in the ad - it says "abs brakes" - abs brakes were first offered in a production car by Mercedes-Benz on the 1979 Mercedes 450SEL 6.9 That car has disc brakes - also rare in 1970

Actually the Mark III was the 1st car to have ABS, they just didn't call it that back then. It was known as "Sure Track" and it was only on the rear brakes. Heres a link to a 1972 lincoln chassis that shows the system.

The Mark III had it way back in 1968! It was available on later model lincolns as an option.

The Corvette has had 4 wheel disc brakes standard since 1965. The 1st car to come with standard power disc brakes was the 1955 Citroen DS (A VERY ugly car). It was way ahead of it's time, it even had an automatic leveling suspension that used hydrolic fluid instead of air like our Marks do. Not bad for 1955!

The very 1st car to have any form of ABS was the 1966 Jensen FF, it used an electro mechanical system very similar to that used by aircraft of the time. The Jensen also had full time 4 wheel drive.

The Mark III was the 1st to have Electronic ABS (Sure Track)

(holds hands up in surrender)

OK! That's pretty unexpected stuff - reminds me of the late 80's pickup truck systems....

I wasn't even aware of these early 2 wheel systems! - I know Bosch/Mercedes made the claim of being first with the 6.9 - but almost certainly that was due to the centrally modulated 4-wheel antilock characteristics (it has a modern-style spider module under the hood)..... I'm totally unfamiliar with that Jensen mechanical system - I'll have to look into that.

God I'd hate to have to find a part for that particular component... or was it standard on all those Mark IIIs?

Here's a link to some info on the Jensen FF

The braking system was originall developed for aircraft.

The "Sure Track" braking system became standard on the Mark III from 1970 on, before that it was optional.
