Headlights

Just installed my new headlight assemblies last night. I was bidding on a set of HID assemblies on ebay, but lost the

, but anyways. I had been reading about the new HIR bulbs and decided to try them in my new assembly. Only a minor modification to get them to fit into the assembly ( took a pair of nair clippers and clipped off the extra material) and they work great. I really had no idea how bad my headlights really was until i put the new assemblys on. I'm hoping that what they say about the HIR bulbs burning cooler than stock bulbs is true. I really enjoy seeing at night again and hope it lasts awhile. I would recommend to anyone not wanting to spend out the money for HIDs to try the HIR bulbs. But you'll need either new, or halfway decent assemblies so you have plenty of the reflective material.

BTW there are another set of HID assemblies on ebay. Last check the bid was 150 a piece. and it ends sunday i think. Good luck to anyone biddin on them

Tell us more about those HIR bulbs - what exactly did you do to make them fit, and what brand/source bulb did you buy? How much did they cost?

Halogen Infrared Reflecting Lamps;

Halogen Infrared (HIR)
HIR bulbs provide all the benefits of standard halogen bulbs and operate more efficiently. An IR (infrared) coating is applied to the filament tube. This multiple layer coating redirects IR (heat) back on to the filament to produce more light for the same amount of energy. The amount of heat generated is reduced and the light is whiter than a standard halogen bulb.

The bulbs I got were 29.75 a piece and the only modification i had to do was trim one of the tabs, which the place i purchased the bulbs from marked. This was the site i purchased them from http://www.rallylights.com/hella/9005.asp

I have the HIR bulbs also. They are definately brighter than any bulbs you'll buy in the stores. But i also bought a relay kit so that made them even brighter. The bulbs are $27.00 a piece, and the relay was about $94 for both the hi and low beams. http://www.danielsternlighting.com/. I went from not seeing anything, to perfect night vision. I should mention that I also bought new housings. But well worth being safe at night.

this place "rallylights.com"

is 15-20 minutes from my house,i contacted them a few months back to see if i could pickup the bulbs there instead of paying shipping charges.(they said yes)
but then i let it go,maybe its time to head on over there and get me some .

you can use them for both if you choose.

is the installation hard? Did it come with some sort of how-to or is there a how to online? I saw that you need to pick up cables that it doesn't come with. Do you have to use higher rated bulbs to take advantage of the extra current? Sorry for all the questions for I know nothing of electronics.

I cut the front off of the assemblies & mounted seal beams in the open holes with a little help from my buddy the Dremel. On it's own it looks factory if you don't know what it should look like. The lights came from an auto store & the local salvage yard. I too can see at night & my wallet didn't suffer as much as it could have. Just talking. Ed

Hey big ed - can you post a picture of your lights?

Just FYI everybody - I'm still investigating the replacement light suppliers - I've even sent out for a couple quotes from Pyrex cookware manufacturers....thinking that real GLASS lenses would be the ultimate....

The light casings and adjusters in the rear are SO complex that I'm having trouble identifying suppliers that are willing to take on molding the whole piece. You'll notice that the back of those lamps have tons of subassemblies....

Now I'm looking at selling rebuild kits and having a remanufacturing/exchange program - but lets keep hoping cuz these lights are just NOT RIGHT
