Rebuilding an Alternator

I have 2 Alternator cores. I was wandering where and if I could get them rebuilt to a higher amp than a stock Alternator?

Check in your local yellow pages under Alternators & Starters, or look for an electrical motor or forklift repair shop. They can almost always do this for you or recommend someone who can. Also check with your local stereo installation shops, they usually have contacts.

Ummm thanks. But! LOL... I guess you don't know where I live...

Those nice places don't exsist around here. LOL... Although it's not hillbilliville, it's not a metro either LOL... Southwest Wisconsin... it's a little backwards.. LOL.... We don't have those places and our local phone book is well the weekly news paper is thicker than it. Yes weekly news paper, comes out once a week. But it is beautiful around here.

But i'll try to see if some of the small engine places have some contacts. We have a few of those scattered around the hills. Thanks...

Ask your local auto store for a rebuild kit they might be able to get one (even heavy duty) for you. It is not that hard to do. Only special tool I needed when doing my 65 T-Bird's was a pair of toothpicks to hold the brushes , temporarily, in place.

In a past life as a truck driver, I used to haul potato's out of Wisconsin. It is a beautiful area, but way too damn cold for my likes. The Dell's are beautiful, guess I could buy a summer house there, but then I would have to winter in Florida. I can get them done locally, but the shipping would probably make the whole thing cost prohibitive. Probably better to buy a high output unit online. Weekly newspaper, thats because the paper boy takes that long to do his route. 25 customers, 250 miles round trip. And he uses a bike during the one month summer and a dog sled the rest of the year.(Just Kidding)

No it takes a full week to get enough news LOL....

I have a very good friend who works in the Dells. It's only an hour away for me. We go up there all the time. Lots of fun and it's growning...

What year cars did the alternators come off of? If they were pre 96 then you can not rebuild them. The reason for this is the diodes are 'welded' to the case, and once you rip them open you break the connectivity and they are no longer useful. At least that is what I have been told by several alternator shops.

They are off a 93 and a 94 Mark VIII.

What I was thinking is if I can get them rebuilt for a fraction of the cost of getting a larger amp Alt. I could get 2 of these done and then I have two spares in case something happens.

From my understanding those ones can not be rebuilt. Lemme call around here to the local alt shops and find out, but if I remember correctly pre-96 models can not be rebuilt.

I think this is correct I called a local Auto electric shop and all they have listed are New - nothing reman.

I stand corrected. I called 3 different shops here, and they all say that they can be rebuilt All years. I think what it was was a stealership tellin me that they could not be rebuilt so I would pay outta the a$$ for a new one from them. Goes to show that they will do ANYthing to steal yo money.

They all said around $110-120 to rebuild worst case scenario.
