2000 Continental Alternator in my Mark VIII

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

EconomySpeedNStyle suggested that I replace my broken alternator with that from a 2000 Continental. He did it on his car. The Continental alternator is 130 amp instead of 120, and it's 6g instead of 3g. Despite the plugs being a full inch farther away from the wiring harness, the alternator went in relatively painlessly and works great 2 weeks later.

Given the hassles people have with mark 8 replacement alternators, i thought this would be a good alternative. I bought mine from partsamerica.com - it has a lifetime warranty and was 138 dollars.

Good post!

Good post... I think those from a Crown Vic will also work... But I could be wrong.

From my research, I believe only 4V alternators fit. The one I chose is from the 2000 Conti because it has the short bodied alt and is a 6G.

The 2000 Continental alternator is a - Ford 4G Series IR/IF 130 Amp, 12 Volt, CW, 6-Groove/57mm OD Pulley.

That alternator was used on the Continental for the years 1995 thru 2002 on the 4.6L. Also used on the 2002 thru 2005 Ford Explorer, Lincoln Aviator, Mercury Mountaineer with the 4.6L.

In addition, the 1999 to 2002 Ford Crown Victoria, Lincoln Town Car, Mercury Grand Marquis with the 4.6L, use this alternator case.

The Lester Number for the alternator on all above mentioned vehicles is 7773.

Always install a new pigtail when changing alternators, since the wires will be brittle. And then, with the extra wire from the new plug, the position of the connection on the alternator doesn't really make any difference. One for the Mark can be picked up at AA. Current pricing is $8.58.

Hmm. The alternator has 6G on it.

Although you're right, after looking at several 6G alts, they have a different looking case.

Here's what the alt looks like that I bought:

Here's a 6G picture:

Either way, it beats the crap out of the weak-ass stock 3G.

I wish I had the box. It said 6G on it somewhere. That's why I thought it was one.

it does say 6G - our is a palladium replacement, not a stock unit, so it's very possible our units are different. But I definitely put a 6G unit in...
