Cooling Fan Advice

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have a 2000 LS8 with a fan problem. The fan on this car howls in traffic. It sounds like a chevy truck with a clutch fan warming up. I replaced the fan but the problem is still there. The problem started after the dealer replaced the valve cover gaskets. I told the dealer about the fan but they wont look at it unless I pay them. The car also gets temp spikes when this happens, and the fan is only loud when the car is warm. Should I change the stat or if there is any snesors should they be changed, the car is very well taken care off and has 60 thousand miles on it. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP OR GIVE ME ANY ADVICE.

are you sure that it's the fan making the noise? and not the hydrualic pump the drives the fan? (lower passenger side of the engine).

check the fluid level of the reservoir

The fluid is good and I think its is the fan because I can hear the fan slowing down as soon as I shut the car off.

well - the hydraulic fan does not turn once the car is turned off. the engine simply cools off in the air.

It almost sounds to me like the fan is operating correctly. If it only happens when the car gets hot and the temps spike, that's what it's supposed to do. Have you had the coolant drained for anything lately? Are you sure it's full of coolant? It's possible you have a cooling or thermostat problem and your fan is fine.

I'll changed my collant about 6 months ago and iam going to do it this week so it should be good. I guess I should change the stat then.. Why would the fan howl so loud, that people start asking questions like what is that sound..

The coolant should be good...Why would this happen after the dealer did the valve cove gaskets??

I had the same problem, its the pump to the fan. Whats happening is your engine temp is up and the fan has different speeds for cooling. The whining noise you hear is the fan on high speed, I would also check all your cooling system hoses, check to see if your overflow tank has any hairline cracks that leak under pressure... And check your thermostat as well.

I Guess I will start by changing the pump and the stat on the car because everthing else on the car cooling wise, seems to be good..
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP

Hey, before you change the pump...its expensive and a bitch to change and especially the line from the reservoir...you said you replaced the fan...did you bleed the hydralic system??? air in the system will cause a loud noise and vibration in the line to the fan motor.

Posted by: Quik LS

Replacing the pump is one of the more challenging things to do on the LS....

I've had mine off twice now - read this post it will save you hours.

I will try bleeding the system first.. I think that when the dealer put the valve cover gaskets on they might have had to remove some of the lines to the fan and I bet they never took time to get the air out..

Posted by: cj7man

Good idea, it only takes 10 minutes...to save hours on changing the pump. good luck. If you don't have a vacuum pump, I think Autozone loan-a-tool does.

Posted by: diddyls8

Would any one know where the correct way to bleed the system???
A big Thank You goes out to everyone that has been helpping me...

Posted by: cj7man

you need a vacuum pump and attach it to the filler of the reservoir. pump it up to release the air...let it sit for a few minutes. Sometimes it has to be repeated. As I said, if you don't have a vacuum pump...check the load-a-tool at Autozone.

You bleed the air thru the bleeder hose, or am I readingthe question wrong? The LS has a specific bleeding system.

Posted by: cj7man

you bleed the coolant system thru the bleeder hose...but this is the hydralic fan system in question, that is bleed by vacuum, pulling the air out thru the reservoir.
