Chip?

I plan on getting a chip for my mark. I was wondering what brand I should look at. I have heard good things about SCT. Any suggestion/comments are welcome.

talk to geno. Its a direct replacement chip so it fits your stock computer.

Nope, you just pop it in to the ECU. Easiest mod there is really.

You can have up to 4 progams on an SCT chip. You change the programs via a switch. I have the single program SCT chip and i'm very happy with it. It's not quite as good as a real dynotune but it's perfect for most Mark VIII's... If you are looking for a used SCT chip, look in the corral modular parts for sale.

Reviving this one..

While searching for instructions on how to locate, remove and install new chip I came across this thread - maybe this post refering to a switch explains one of these switches I found up under the panel...would one of these be switch (I put a box around them but it's faint)...and what is this stinkin mess?!

I never did locate a good set of instructions so if you have a url - hook a hottie up would ya

Yes. I have one and am very pleased with it.

These are the tunes I asked for:
91 octane
87 octane
Vallet mode (rev limited to 2000 rpm, and speed limited to 30 mph.

Bear in mind that you'll probably be charged for each tune programmed for the different switch settings.

Actually you should not. I can send mine back for additional tunes and tweaks for free anytime - within reason. I am sure if I send mine back EVERY month he may charge.

I will ONLY recommend a chip that can hold more than one program if you need it. I do since I travel a lot and find the "economy tune" great for getting well over 30 MPG while maintaining performance at higher RPM. If you have lots of performance mods and the car looks the part, valet mode can be great - trust me.

If you honestly dont need to change programs, dont worry and get one that can not be changed. You will find that if you dont need to change it, you never will and you will settle into that one program you like best. ANY chip is a massive upgrade on the Mark. I have an SVT with 4 programs and I think room for two more.

0 = Performance with firm shifts
1 = Performance with stock shift firmness
2 = Performance with firm shifts and 2 degrees more timing
3 = Economy mode
4 = Stock
5 = blank
6 = blank

Geno, I'm thinking of getting one of your chips for my 96 Mark. Is there more than one ECU catch code for 96?

I meant on the original order, as opposed to re-burns. BOC charged me $100 per tune.

On a side note, I later got a re-burn from FPN, and was charged a total of $120 with shipping. I don't know if I'd be charged again from either programmer if I needed another re-burn.

Another recommendation here for SCT tuning.

If you have a -95 (OBDI), you need to get a chip. Single program, or a switch chip (holds multiple programs, uses small knob/rotary switch to change)
The chip slips right in the j3 port on the back of the PCM (remove dust cover)

If you have a 96+ (OBDII/EEC-V) DEFINITELY get an SCT X calibrator 2 reflasher, even if you only get one program for it. The ability to adjust shift points and firmness to YOUR preference whenever you want is worth the extra cost over a normal 'chip'

I have an SCT chip on my Mark, and use an xCal2 on my Marquis. Very happy with both, I like to play around with things so I fiddle with the tunes for my Marquis often!

Also, stay away from the tunes sold on eBay. They are 'cookie cutter' programs, not individualized for you specific setup.

Yes, there is. Catchcode is printed in bold text on the PCM j3 port dust cover (easiest to see) and on the connector shell (have to remove to read it here)

Most likely an aftermarket alarm and/or remote start system.

If you get a reflasher instead of a chip all you need to do is plug it in the black OBD II connector as seen in your pic.
