Update on 'Barney's' New Shoes

Ok....I have to actually thank Calvin Louie for sending me in the direction of the tires that I currently have on my car. I WAS a Nitto fan for the longest time (relatively cheap tires that performed well), BUT these Yokohama Avid V4s's are simply AWESOME....to say the least. Now, mind you, they are not the best in the world, but the best for the price I would have to say. They were only $97 each from Tire Rack (plus shipping and road hazard warranty) and let me tell ya....they perform better than I thought they would.......let me explain:

This past Saturday I had to make a trip from Pittsburgh to Breezewood, it is about a 2.5 hour drive.....now I had to go in the opposite direction before I actually left to go to Breezewood, and there is ALL kind of work on the roads in both directions (both to and from the opposite direction I was going). I had to go in the opposite direction about a half an hour, so, normally that would be an hour (duhhhhhh) for the trip to and from, but you have to factor in the construction. So, the hour drive now became about 1.5 hours (a bit of lively driving cut it WAY down). I left my house at like 11:30 and had to be in Breezewood at 3PM. So, it would have taken 2.5 hours to get to Breezewood under normal circumstances (not counting the construction that is on the Turnpike), and I had to go 1.5 hours out of my way (due to forgetfullness

). Now, that makes the time that I left my house at 1PM (have to basically go right by the house to go to the turnpike to go to Breezewood), and it usually takes 2.5 hours (not counting the GIVEN traffic on the turnpike) to get there, now I am lookin at 3:30PM instead of the set time of 3PM.......hmmmmm.....looks like some more spirited driving is in order....BUT....to my dismay....it is POURING down rain the minute I get onto the Turnpike

So, I decide to test out the new tires, and run the speedometer up to about 110 (and then some at times) to try to make up the time. Then...I hit traffic about an hour or so into the drive (total standstill for about 20-30 minutes), but had made up ALOT of time getting there with the spirited driving. I get out of the traffic at about 2:30 with about an hour left (normal speeds that is) to Breezewood (told ya I made up some time). So, I bump up the speed again to the desired range (110-120 again) and make it there at about 3:15 (had to make a pist stop on the way after the traffic jam).

Now, if anyone knows anything about the PA Turnpike, they know that there are ALOT of curves (quite a few of them really sharp) and a few tunnels that you have to navigate while traveling this damn PAY road. I made a 2.5 hour drive in under 2.5 hours in the pouring rain, with all those damn bends, and including a total stand still for about 30 minutes.....and those tires NEVER broke a sweat. They held the road like no ones business, and asked when it was all over, if they could have more. These Yoko's are DEF on my next purchase order, as long as they have them in my size for what ever wheels I have on.......

And a lot of COPS! You're crazy! Glad to hear you are happy with your tires. And for the price, you can't go wrong. What's the rating on them?

Yeah, usually there are ALOT of cops, but most likely due to the accident (saw like 10 cop cars along the back up) and the construction, there were not many left to police the highway....???

Here is the rating directly from the Yokohama website......UTQG rating of 500/AA/A. Can you believe a V-rated tire with a 500 rating, and here I thought anything over a 300 was good.....

Sounds like one helluva tire. The twists and turns on that road are pretty tight at times, that's for sure. BUT.....110 on the PA Turnpike?!?!? Man you're lucky you didn't shred them new shoes. For those that don't know, PA roads are HORRIBLE! And for the road taxes PA gets, they should be perfect. Where does the money go? Hmmmmm Potholes you could lose a good size dog in. I took the vette up to the "BURGH" last year. Had to put new shoes and shocks on her when I got back. No way I would do that again.

I have driven the Turnpike for YEARS, and I know the spots that the road has no potholes on it. As a matter of fact, a good portion of the turnpike from here to Carlisle is in near perfect condition now. They have used some of that money to upgrade the turnpike and also have recently raised the rates as well. So, hopefully the turnpike will not end up like it was...........POT HOLE HEAVEN!
